Hi George Megalogenis,

Do you know what other form of government insists of ‘stable majority government’ as ideal?

Illiberal democracies, Dictatorships, Authoritarianism.

Albanese lists five key points regarding the Social Media Ban. His words.

1) Bill puts the onus on social media companies via $50 million dollar fines.

2) There are common sense exemptions for Headspace, Youtube and Google Classroom, as well as games.

3) There will be strict privacy obligations on social media platforms to destroy data.

4) The Minister has decision making power balanced with the eSafety commissioner.

5) It will be effective because nowhere else in the world has done it.

Point three is perhaps the most concerning. Albanese makes no reference to what data will be destroyed but presumably it's the trojan horse digital ID requirement imposed on all Australians which Labor has glossed over and refused to discuss in any depth.

A good reminder of what we're up against. This ABC News article describes an 'anti-fossil fuel' protest.

No explanation WHY there was an 'anti-fossil fuel protest'.

No comments from any scientist.

No mention of the future risks to human civilisation with continued use of fossil fuels

Goose chasing an ABC News reporter asking 'Why was there an anti-fossil fuel protest'?

Element that's been quiet or missing from the US tariff discussion seems to be reciprocal tariffs.

Other nations won't just sit there quivering as the US breaks all its trade agreements and tariffs are levied on their exports. They'll retaliate. Everyone, everywhere, all at once.

Which is great news for a trading nation like Australia if one of our major competitors are suddenly blown out of the market. We might be one tenth the size of the US, but our exports are one sixth theirs and we compete in a range of areas, most notably agriculture.

Australian farmers and the rural and regional communities they support are in for a significant boost if the incoming US administration makes good on its crazed threats.

#auspol #uspol

Looming US v Everyone trade war will certainly cause major damage to that economy, but not convinced it will hurt Australia significantly.

Our major trading partners have been preparing for this for some time in various ways, China's heavy investment in its growing domestic market for instance.

And we're one of a few countries with a trade deficit with the US. Them tanking actually reduces our debt exposure, especially if we enact reciprocal tariffs as called for by our trade agreements. And other countries will likewise level reciprocal tariffs on them - making our our own industries with US rivals much more competitive.

Then there's the positives for the environment of a crippled US economy. Much lower production from a fossil fuel based nation means lower fossil fuel use.

Not saying there won't be negatives just not convinced they'll outweigh the positives, for us anyway. The US is fucked.

What a disgusting party Australian Labor has become - abandoning all their core values of social justice and equity, and now bedding down with gambling companies and media barons.

We already had the Coalition. We didn't need two of them.

#auspol

ABC confirms what everyone already knew - Albanese Govt has abandoned gambling ad reform against overwhelming public and multi-party support.

Old media wins significant campaign to keep the harmful revenue stream, assisted by Nine's former corporate lawyer, Communications Minister Michelle Rowland. No doubt a lucrative position awaits post-politics.

Comment - Re ICC arrest warrants:
There are many historical examples of then-alleged war criminals who continued to commit acts against humanity whilst ‘at large’ and subject to an ICC Warrant.

I hope Australia never ends up in the history books for the wrong reasons.

Hello #Canberra peeps.

A strong movie recommendation, playing at Palace right now.

A documentary. Gives a moving and powerful first person account of what life's like for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation.

If you have friends who think the current conflict began as an unprovoked attack on 7 Oct 23 (eg the parliamentary Labor and LNP, plus all their advisors and most of the APS) then bring them with you!

Australia's mining barons never want the public thinking too hard about the basis of their astronomical wealth, which is ultimately the legal equivalent of 'finders keepers.'

The country's richest person has done nothing to justify her riches - no inventing or producing, just taking - which is why Rinehart's so desperate to bank roll entire foundations and political parties and media networks to keep everyone distracted, and the sweet cash flowing in. Works too.

#auspol

Mining Barons' sphincters clenching.

They needn't worry - Labor's involved. Negotiations will be done in bad faith and deliberately carve out any reference to First Nations owning their own land or resources. Good bit of theatre though.

This just posted on Rising Tide's Facebook page:

"Over 100 people are risking arrest by continuing to blockade the coal port. Police have told protestors that they’re breaching section 15A of the Maritime Safety Act by remaining in the shipping channel."

An image taken from Rising Tide's Facebook page. It shows 100 people in kayaks out on the water at Newcastle coal port (in New South Wales, Australia) being confronted with a police vessel filled with officers. The water is murky green, the kayaks are very brightly coloured (red, yellow, green, blue, etc) and the police boat is darkest black.

Shorten just gave a very graceful valedictory speech, found it well worth watching.

Looking forward to him leaving Parliament and being off the leash. Not sure all his former colleagues will.
