My mum worked in a video shop when we were kids, so we got to see quite a lot of films that were completely unsuitable and actually illegal for us to watch 🤣

I bet that was fun! My experience was that we had a video van man that came around and parked outside our house and I got a lot of access to unsuitable films, but then I'd started with Psycho at 5 as my gran thought it'd be "fun" and it really was XD

Later on when I was 13, I befriended a video store man who let me watch video nasties, I am forever in his debt for my film education =)

Yeah, I think I was about 11 when I saw The Exorcist (thanks, Lesley the babysitter!) and my mum never really cared about certification. Having access to the whole shop, often for free, meant like you, my brother and I had an excellent film education. It helped that there was great film programming on the terrestrial channels in the 80s too - I saw loads of foreign language films and odd kitsch because of C4 and Videodrome.
