#PolymathReadingChallenge Book 2 (Category is: 17th-18th century)

I was worried at first that this would be a sad read, but it was truly fascinating. A Dutch sea captain brought a tame Indian rhino named Clara to Europe, and toured the entire continent with her for 20 years. She didn't only become the first well-known example of her species - but also the subject of the first viral marketing campaign in history.

Cover of the book titled "Clara's Grand Tour: Travels with a rhinoceros in eighteenth-century Europe" by Glynis Ridley. Cover features a drawing of a wooden cart carrying a rhinoceros.
And named her Clara... LOL

Even the animecon mascow cow (yes it's a cow XD) is called Clara the cow. Most Dutch name ever. But usually for cows XD
lol that makes it even better :D Apparently she was very friendly and docile.
I wonder if a Rhino would eat stroopwafels (though I am not sure those existed yet) XD
This sounds good.
Interesting - thank you.
This is two centuries after Dürer - was he drawing from a description, or he went abroad for his subject?
Dürer was working from a description/sketch of an actual rhino that was brought into Portugal and then shipped off to Rome for the Pope. But it sank during the voyage and sadly never made it.
