19th century British folktale translators be like

*Native bird name* = Pidgeon
*Native songbird name* = Blackbird
*Native raptor name* = Eagle
*Native antelope name* = Deer
*Native name for jackal* = Clever Fox
*Native name for any feline* = Tiger

🤦‍♀️

and "any native grain" = corn
unrelated but reminds me of something I always wanted to know and you may have an answer: why is there a magyar népmese where there is a magical bird which is.. a pelican?
Is this coming from a mistranslation of sort?
Did old Hungarians not know what a pelican is?
They did, but I think it comes from Christian iconography. Sometime in the Middle Ages pelican became a symbol of self-sacrifice because people thought it feeds its young with its own blood. So it became one of those mythical birds that just leaked into folklore :D We also have beautifully singing peacocks :D
