" #IDF is gearing up for a comprehensive offensive" with the help of hundreds of thousands of reserve personnel, its stmt says.

No timings were given. A ground offensive into the #Gaza Strip has been expected and #Israel has asked residents in the north to flee.

It says they plan an offensive "involving air, sea, and land" forces.

The #European Commission said it will immediately triple #humanitarian assistance for #Gaza

That's an extra 50m euros - for a total of 75m euros. The #EU is already the largest foreign donor to the #Palestinian people.

"It is essential that safe and unrestricted access for humanitarian aid is ensured", a stmt urged
The conditions in #Gaza are "fast becoming untenable," #UN aid chief Martin Griffiths said. "I fear that the worst is yet to come Humanity is failing."

So far at least five planes carrying humanitarian relief have arrived in Egypt's Sinai, Red Cross #ICRC officials said.

The #WHO said a plane carrying trauma medicines and health supplies had also landed.

Al Arish airport on #Sinai is about 45 km from the Gaza border, but the #Rafah crossing with #Egypt remains closed.

It's been 8 days since #Hamas launched its attack against #Israel and stories of extraordinary courage, and horror, continue to emerge:

Neta Portal was shot six times when Hamas gunmen stormed the #KfarAza kibbutz in southern Israel.

She had jumped from a window to escape a grenade, only for Hamas militants to open fire.

The #UN relief agency operating in #Gaza has said its shelters in the northern part of the territory "are not safe anymore" - calling it "unprecedented".

"This war should be no exception," UNRWA said in a statement. "Protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure including UN buildings applies to this conflict too."

"Wars have rules," #UNRWA said. "Civilians, hospitals, schools, clinics and UN premises cannot be a target."

One of the #Palestinian families that reached the Maghazi camp in southern #Gaza told the #BBC "the last three days had been "unspeakable".

"We are hostages here for both sides, for #Israel and for #Hamas ."

"If Israel are not able to find Hamas, they must not bomb the civilians and the infrastructure. We are not animals, we are not in a zoo, we are human beings."
#WHO stmt says the lives of those in intensive care or who rely on life support; newborns in incubators, and many others hang in the balance:

"Forcing more than 2,000 patients to relocate to southern #Gaza could be tantamount to a death sentence"

health workers have overwhelmingly chosen to stay behind, rather than risk moving their critically ill patients, a choice it calls "impossible".

It calls for #Israel "to reverse #evacuation orders to hospitals in northern Gaza"
The #US State Department has confirmed 29 American citizens have been killed in #Hamas attacks in #Israel

In a statement, the State Department added it was aware of 15 more citizens and one permanent resident of the US that are still unaccounted for.
There's been a protest outside #Israel’s def min by families demanding more information about those missing and the #hostages held by #Hamas.

Some there believed the area around #Gaza was left unprotected because troops had been deployed to the occupied West Bank by the hardline, ultranationalist govt of Netanyahu.

"The #IDF is supposed to defend us, not to secure some crazy adventure of settlers which only harm the security of Israel and the security of its soldiers" a participant said
Mark Schwarz, a ret. US lieutenant general has told the #BBC an #Israeli ground invasion into #Gaza is unlikely to be imminent because of the degree of preparation required.

The former US security co-ordinator for #Israel and the #Palestinian Authority, says the Israeli military's final preparations are probably "a few days away, if not hours away".

The logistical sustainment of such an operation - such as the number of casualties the Israeli military is likely to sustain - is hard to predict
#Russia has asked the United Nations' Security Council #UNSC to vote on Monday on a draft resolution on the #Israel - #Hamas conflict that calls for a humanitarian ceasefire and condemns violence against civilians and "all acts of terrorism", Reuters news agency said

In #Egypt, an aid convoy has been waiting for hours to enter #Gaza through the #Rafah crossing.

In recent days the checkpoint has been closed due to #Israel's aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip which has reportedly damaged the #Palestinian side of the crossing.

This has prevented people from leaving or entering Gaza through the checkpoint. It also means aid has been held up at the border, and aid agencies have urged authorities to let their convoys through.
It is just over a week since #Hamas gunmen infiltrated #Israel to attack both civilians and soldiers. More than 1,300 people have been killed in Israel.

Israel has been carrying out retaliatory air strikes in #Gaza and a ground offensive is expected.

In total, 2,329 #Palestinians have been killed and 9,714 have been injured, according to the health ministry.
Thousands of #Palestinians are continuing to flee northern #Gaza ahead of #Israel's expected ground offensive.

In its latest update the #IDF says civilians still in northern Gaza must head south between 10:00 and 13:00 local time.

They should use a single route running from Beit Hanoun towards Khan Yunis, it says, adding that it will not target the route during those hours.

Initially, a 24-hour evacuation window was set by Israel for people to flee the area.

Blinken has warned that every precaution must be taken to avoid harming civilians as #Israel prepares for a major ground offensive in #Gaza. More than 2600 #Palestinians have been killed since the #Hamas assault on Israel

The Israeli energy minister says the country has decided to resume supplying #water to Southern Gaza. Katz said the decision has been agreed between #Netanyahu and Biden
From #UN Sec Gen Guterres stmt - he made two appeals - for #Hamas to release the #hostages without any conditions, and for #Israel to grant rapid and unimpeded access for £humanitarian #aid to #Gaza.

#Netanyahu says he'll “eliminate” #Hamas. But what happens the day after? We’ve been getting some clues about thinking within parts of the #Israeli govt.

the #US Embassy in #Israel said people "may wish to move closer" to the #Rafah crossing on the #Gaza - #Egypt border. It was citing US media reports which said the Rafah crossing will open "for a few hours". Neither report has been confirmed.

NBC News, citing a #Palestinian official, said the crossing would be open at 9am local time. ABC News, citing a security source, said the crossing would open for a few hours on Monday "and then close again in the late afternoon".
#IDF spox said they estimate some 500,000 people have left northern #Gaza so far and accused #Hamas of making it difficult for those trying to move south.
Asked about a bombing on Friday which killed a reported 70 people on a road identified as safe by the Israeli army, Conricus repeated that IDF does not actively target civilians.

But at one point during the briefing he appeared to acknowledge that the 'nature of the operation' means it’s 'not always possible to avoid civilian casualties.'
In Khan Yunis, that has become a temporary home for hundreds of thousands of people who have fled the north, most people there have nowhere to stay, says a resident

“schools’re filling up and the facilities are poor. Thousands more are just staying on the streets,”

In the video, a young woman says her name is Maya Shem, she is 21 years old and from Shoham, in Israel.
It's been reported that the US Secretary of State and the Israeli prime minister had to shelter in a bunker for five minutes when air sirens went off during their meeting in Tel Aviv.

The insight into what happened in the meeting between Antony #Blinken and Benjamin #Netanyahu was released by US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Good morning, it is nearly 7 AM in the Middle East - some overnight developments:
Joe Biden will visit #Israel on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced. Biden will coordinate with #Israeli partners to secure the release of hostages taken by #Hamas, and hear from Israel how it would conduct its operations in a way that minimises civilian casualties and allow #humanitarian aid to flow into #Gaza in a way that does not benefit Hamas
Diplomatic talks are also continuing about the possibility of reopening the #Rafah crossing between #Egypt and #Gaza so that aid can be brought into Gaza and foreign nationals can be evacuated

A video analysed by BBC Verify appears to show an air strike at the Rafah crossing on the Egyptian side of the border, creating a large explosion
#BBC correspondents answering audience questions- full of good analysis, a short version:
Could other countries be dragged in?
Jeremy Bowen:
The Americans just deployed 2 aircraft carrier battle groups to the eastern Med to send a very firm message to #Iran to stay out. One of the major fault lines in the Middle East runs between the US and its allies, and the Iranians and theirs. If it went from a cold to a hot war it would ignite a Middle East conflagration of global significance.
#bbc #Iran
What is #Israel 's objective? Lyse Doucet: In past wars, Israel vowed to "hit #Hamas hard", now it is vowing "to destroy Hamas". Israel has the military might to smash Hamas's infrastructure, crush its tunnels, and cripple its command and control networks. Hamas's military prowess, including an astonishingly granular understanding of Israeli security that enabled it to outsmart its formidable defences, has shocked Israelis. Hamas is likely to possess the same sophistication (cont.)
when it confronts what it knows will be a ferocious #Israeli response. And unlike the Islamic State group, #Hamas is also a political and social organisation embedded in #Palestinian society.

A military onslaught can destroy its metal and concrete but not the mettle of the people whose resolve to die for their cause will only harden.
What was #Hamas goal with the attack?
Frank Gardner: The reason given at the time by Hamas spox was that "enough is enough". The attack, he said, was in response to what Hamas called constant provocations and humiliations suffered by #Palestinians at the hands of #Israelis in both #Gaza and the West Bank. Analysts believe there may have been other, undeclared reasons. Before the attack, Israel and #Saudi Arabia were well on the way to normalising ties. (Cont.)
This was opposed by both #Hamas and its backer, #Iran . The #Saudis have now suspended those talks. Hamas's leadership will have noticed the sharp divisions in #Israeli society caused by judicial reforms introduced by the right-wing government of Benjamin #Netanyahu . They aimed to deal Israel a painful blow - and in that they succeeded
Why is #Egypt keeping the crossing closed? Jeremy Bowen: the Egyptian government, even at quiet times, does not allow routine access from #Gaza through the #Rafah crossing. #Egypt has been the junior partner in earlier versions of Israel's siege of Gaza ever since #Hamas took over there in 2007.
Hamas has its roots in the Muslim Brotherhood, an organisation founded in Egypt a century ago. The Brotherhood wants to reshape states and society in line with Islamic teaching and belief. (Cont.)
The #Egyptian military opposes that desire. It overthrew an elected Muslim president in 2013.
#Egypt 's current regime has relations with #Hamas, and has in the past been the link between Hamas and #Israel . But it does not want an influx of #Palestinian refugees.
The camps in Gaza still exist 75 years after they were established to house refugees - forced out by newly independent Israel - who have never been allowed home.
The world issued an international arrest warrant against Putin. Why has there not been the same response against #Hamas leadership? Was this not a war crime on a massive scale?
Paul Adams: #Israel did not consider itself at war with Hamas before 7 October, despite previous rounds of conflict stretching back many years. For Israel, this was an act of terrorism, not war. Benjamin Netanyahu's government is pursuing justice in its own way (cont.)
and has already killed at least two #Hamas commanders it regards as responsible for the massacres.
It will doubtless attempt to kill many more.
Questions may arise about the organisation's political leadership - which lives in #Qatar and #Lebanon - who, some say, were unaware of the military wing's plans to attack inside #Israel
Why is the UN not intervening on air strikes?
James Landale: The main reason why many countries are not urging #Israel to stop its airstrikes is because they accept the country has been attacked by #Hamas and has a right to defend itself. Where they are urging restraint is about how Israel defends itself. The United Nations too has urged Israel to avoid civilian casualties. UN Sec Gen Guterres said a few days ago: "International humanitarian law and human rights law must be respected (cont )
and upheld; civilians must be protected and also never used as shields."
#Israel insists its warplanes and artillery are striking #Hamas targets in #Gaza. But many civilians are indeed being killed and injured in those strikes.
#Palestinians say that is because the #Israeli strikes are excessive and indiscriminate. #Israel says it is because #Hamas uses civilians as human shields (in #Gaza )
How did Israel not know about Hamas's attack?
Yolande Knell: In the past, Israel's military has opened up its control centre for surveillance of Gaza to journalists, and it's clear that it has excellent real-time information about movements on the ground from drones and other cameras. It also has a vast network of informants. We saw in May's fighting with Islamic Jihad just how accurate Israel's information on the whereabouts of leading militants could be. (Cont.)
In briefings, #Israeli military officials accept there have been major intelligence and security failings when it comes to the unprecedented, deadly attack by #Hamas
However, we can rely on the fact that it has an accurate, long list of Hamas targets that it will go after as soon as it gets boots on the ground.
How does #Hezbollah compare to Hamas?
Hugo Bachega: Hezbollah - a #Lebanese military, political, and social movement - has long been seen by #Israel as a more formidable force than #Hamas
The heavily armed Iranian-backed group has an estimated 130,000 rockets and missiles, according to the CSIS. Most of this arsenal is made up of small, man-portable and unguided surface-to-surface artillery rockets. But it also includes anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles, (cont.)
as well as guided missiles capable of striking deep inside Israel, much more sophisticated than what Hamas has at its disposal.
Hezbollah's leader has claimed to have 100,000 fighters, although independent estimates vary between 20,000 and 50,000. Many are well trained and battle hardened, and have fought in the Syrian civil war.
Hamas, by comparison, has an estimated 30,000 fighters, according to Israel.
V #BBC Jean Mackenzie:
The South Korean military says it has been monitoring signs that North #Korea supplied #Hamas with weapons used in its attack on #Israel , a military official said in a background briefing to domestic reporters.

The official also suggested that the Hamas tactic of incursion by motorised paragliders could have originated in North Korea, pointing to the regime’s reinforced air infiltration training using paragliders.
V #BBC Hugo Bachega:
#Iran 's foreign minister has said #Israel will not be allowed to act in the #Gaza Strip without consequences, and warns of "pre-emptive action" in the coming hours.

For the past week, #Hezbollah and the Israeli military have exchanged fire across the border but so far the fighting has been contained.

Overnight, the Israeli military said it had targeted infrastructure linked to the militant group in response to cross-border violence. There were no reports of casualties
#Israeli strikes have targeted homes in the south of #Gaza , the #Palestinian interior ministry has said - including 21 people killed in an air strike on a house in Khan Younis.

It said another 28 people were killed in a strike on a house in the #Rafah area, near to the border crossing with #Egypt . The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said women and children were among the dead
#IDF spox Conricus says 600,000 #Palestinians have made "the smart and self-preservatory" decision to move south (ahead of its expected ground offensive).

But, he goes on "still a few hundred thousand that need to - and should - go".

Conricus claims #Hamas - which told people to stay put - had a "delaying effect" on people leaving the area, but he is confident that the more time goes on, the more the militant group will stop using "its own civilians as human shields"
Hundreds of people are feared dead after a huge explosion at a hospital in #Gaza City where #Palestinians injured in the #Israel - #Hamas war were being treated, while others were seeking safety after days of #Israeli air strikes.

The #Hamas-led authorities in Gaza say 500 people died in the explosion at the Al Ahli hospital. Hamas blamed #Israel , which in turn blamed #Palestinian militants
#ICRC says it is "shocked and horrified" by reports of the huge blast at the Al Ahli Arab hospital in #Gaza

"Hospitals should be sanctuaries to preserve human life, not scenes of death and destruction," says ICRC.
"No patient should be killed in a hospital bed. No doctors should lose their lives while trying to save patients."

#Hamas have blamed an #Israeli air strike.

France condemns the attack on the Al-Ahli Arab hospital in #Gaza, President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

"France condemns the attack on the Al-Ahli Arab hospital in Gaza, which made so many Palestinian victims. Our thoughts are with them. All the light must be shed on the circumstances," the French president said.

" #Humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip must be opened back without delay," he said.
V Haaretz:
#UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said she was "horrified" by the #Gaza #hospital attack without ascribing blame to either party.

"While details are still emerging and bodies are still being counted, the scenes on the ground are devastating," she said, adding "attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals, are unacceptable and must cease now."
One of the Anglican Church’s leading figures in Jerusalem has called the huge blast at a hospital in #Gaza City "an unmitigated disaster". The Al Ahli hospital, which is fully funded by the Anglican Church.

"It is absolute horror show which is unfolding," Canon Richard Sewell, dean of St George’s College, told #BBC. "There is also no justification for this type of attack." #Hamas have blamed an Israeli air strike, Israel denied its military was involved
Analysis v #BBC's Jeremy Bowen:
On all fronts now - the #humanitarian situation in #Gaza; the military situation between #Israel and Gaza, the political situation across the region - things are escalating very quickly and this is a very volatile and difficult time.

Everything is showing as critical – red lights are flashing all over the Middle East – and #Biden is flying into the heart of all of this. (Cont.)
'And the fact that the Arabs felt so comfortable about cancelling their meeting with the US president is also revealing.

That is a reflection of the gravity of the situation here, but also of the waning power of America.

A few years ago I don’t think they would have dared to deliver what is effectively a great big snub to the President of the United States.'
Footage from #Gaza City shows chaotic scenes outside the Al #Ahli #hospital as emergency workers attended to casualties and took them to a nearby hospital.

#Hamas says an #Israeli air strike hit the hospital. #Israel says the blast was caused by rockets misfired by another group, #Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and both sides deny blame.

The #BBC is working to verify what happened.

V #BBC Jeremy Bowen:
Joe #Biden ’s personal intervention was always a gamble. The destruction of Al #Ahli #hospital makes it even more difficult.

He wants simultaneously to protect and support #Israel , and alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe among #Gaza ’s civilians.

Israel insists the hospital was destroyed by #Palestinian Islamic Jihad #PIJ , a faction that is smaller than #Hamas and closer to #Iran .
'The #Israeli military says the projectile malfunctioned and fell short of its target in #Israel

Millions of #Palestinians and others in the Middle East will not believe that. #Jordan , #Egypt , #Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates #UAE are among the countries condemning Israel.

The question now is whether anger caused by the attack increases the chances of a wider war.'
In a tweet, US President Joe #Biden said he was "outraged and deeply saddened" by the #Ahli #hospital blast - and directed his national security team to "continue gathering information about what exactly happened".
#IDF 's Daniel Hagari says the #Israeli military has concluded the #Palestinian Islamic Jihad #PIJ group was responsible for the Al #Ahli #hospital blast.

He says a barrage of rockets were fired by #Hamas to #Israel at 18:15 local time on Tuesday - before the hospital blast.

Then, at 18:59, he says a barage of around 10 rockets was fired by PiJ from a nearby cemetery. At the same time, there were reports of an explosion at the hospital in #Gaza City, he says.
#IDF Hagari continues, saying #Hamas understood the blast was caused by a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket, but launched a "global media campaign" to blame #Israel

"They went as far as inflating the numbers of casualties," he says. "They understood with absolute certainty that it was a rocket misfired by Islamic Jihad that damaged the ( #Ahli ) #hospital ."

He says aerial footage confirms there was no direct hit to the hospital itself and there was no damage to nearby buildings.
Hagari says if the #IDF was responsible for the blast there would have been a "crater" or some "structural damage".

Showing a diagram of the ( #Ahli ) #hospital, he says there is no such damage - "the walls stay intact".

He says this is because the blast was caused by an Islamic Jihad #PIJ rocket, which "failed to launch" properly and was "misfired".

As a reminder, #Hamas and #Palestinian authorities have blamed #Israel for the blast at the hospital
Explaining how the #Israeli military has concluded it was an Islamic Jihad #PIJ rocket, Hagari gives the following reasons:

Confirmation there was no IDF fire from "land, sea or air that hit the hospital"

Israel's "radar system" tracked rockets fired from within #Gaza - he says there are two independent videos that show the failure of the rocket launch

There is intelligence, which shows communication between militant groups about failed rocket launches - he goes on to translate some of that
Hagari repeats the #Israeli claim that 450 rockets from #Gaza have misfired and landed in Gaza since the latest cycle of violence began.

The BBC has not been able to verify Hagari's claims. Our team is looking at the incident to try to work out what happened, using weapons experts.
#CNN reporter asks why the media should believe the #IDF 's claims, using an example of the #Israeli government once blaming #Palestinian militants for the death of the journalist #Shireen Abu #Aqla
He says it's now known this isn't true.
Responding, Hagari admits #Israel has, in the past, been "fast to go to conclusions".

But he says after the hospital blast, officials "took their time" because they wanted to "double check" they had all the facts right.
#BBC 's intnl editor Jeremy Bowen asks #IDF 's Hagari whether he thinks the governments of #Jordan , #Egypt , #Saudi Arabia and the #UAE - which last night condemned #Israel for the hospital blast - will believe his claims.

Hagari says he hopes, following the IDF's analysis, that "the BBC will now share this investigation and those countries will listen".

He adds that the IDF intends to share the analysis with the US - and any other country that wants to see it.
European Comm Pres von der Leyen has told the Eur Parliament there's no excuse for hitting a #hospital full of civilians in #Gaza , calling the Al #Ahli explosion a "senseless tragedy".

"All facts need to be established and those responsible must be held accountable," she said, without attributing blame.

Von der Leyen has faced some criticism for her visit to Israel last week, in which she did not caveat her message of solidarity by stressing Israel also had to follow humanitarian law. (Cont)
In this morning's address von der Leyen made clear "Europe stands with Israel in this dark moment", adding that Israel had a right to defend itself in line with international law.

But she also emphasised that the EU had always been the biggest donor for Palestinians and "this will not change".

It’s chaotic here. At one point a US sec official ordered press members back from a crowded check point inside, amid rowdy confusion about who was allowed past.

It’s a sign of how quickly this has all been slapped together. It’s extremely rare for a US president to make a visit to a conflict zone at short notice

A planned meeting with Arab leaders has already been cancelled.

'The #Palestinian Islamic Jihad #PIJ rejected the #Israeli military #IDF spokesman's statement that a failed rocket launch by the militant group in #Gaza was the source of the explosion at Al-#Ahli #Hospital on Tuesday night, claiming that "the angle of the impact and the intensity of the fire proves that it was an attack from the air", adding that "Israel is spreading [contradicting] versions [of events]". (Cont.)
#Israeli FM spox "Lior Ben-Dor said that the #hospital houses weapons and that the explosion occurred from where these were launched, while the army says that the explosion was the result of a failed launch by the Islamic Jihad."
The #PIJ also said that "just as #Israel has previously abdicated responsibility for crimes it committed, including the injury to journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, this is repeating itself now as well."
