This highlights a flaw in the US civil court system. There is a cottage industry in liability claims. "Free money" (for lawyers). It is cheaper for companies to settle than fight. The jury system favors plaintiffs. Appeal to emotion (from alleged harm, without establishing causality), while demanding companies prove innocence (precautionary principle).
Illinois, and particularly Madison County, is notorious for pro-plaintiff juries. Many class action suits against major corporations are filled there. It is a form of judicial venue shopping by lawyers. Bigger judgments mean more money for them. Victim compensation is only a side effect.
