When I was putting together my "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" manuscript, I was constantly told that it is not a sellable concept for a book - because "people want to read their favorite myths", and not unkown ones.

Now the reviews are trickling in, and every reviewer highlights how exciting it is to find unknown myths about the well-known gods and heroes.

🤷‍♀️

(Still looking for an English language publisher, btw.)

strange opinion from the publishers... Being able to read previously unknown to them Greek and Roman myths sounds like what everyone interested in myths wants.
See that's what I thought too :) But I thought maybe I am in a nerdy bubble
sounds like my kind of nerdy bubble! Would it help to have a list of people who've agreed "I'd totally chuck cash at that" you can waft in front of the publishers?
I think that is called a Kickstarter project... :D Which is also not a bad idea.
I dunno how it works in Hungary.

But at least in Germany, running a Kickstarter means that you have to formally found a business, with all that implies. Being a (self-published) author is _much_ less of a headache, in terms of taxes and other bureaucracy!
I think the way to get this published in English to use Kickstarter to pay for the translation. I work in publishing, and I'm imagining the P&L spreadsheet in my head.
Honestly, I have an English translation halfway done. I write and have published in English before.
in which languages is the book aviable. I want to buy it bc that sounds great. 🙂

It's in Hungarian :)
ok, then I have to wait or learn Hungarian. 😅
I want this in English 😭
@SRLevine I’m sad I can’t go order this in English, I want to read it! :blobcat_cwy:
This is what all the big ones are doing, look at Disneys big productions like the mermaid, pocahontas and so on. They go with something they know sells, creating something original is a big risk.

When I browse media I usually skip things I recognise since I already know it. Not interesting to read the same thing again. I want new stuff! But I guess we are a bit different here on Mastodon anyway 😉
not sure if it fita their scope but try Synergetic Press. best of luck
that's like when I was browsing the library looking for French fairy tales, folklore and mythology for my #ttrpg game. Endless books on Greek, Roman & Norse mythology, next to nothing on central European
If you want to go the self-publishing route, you know where to find me for advice. 😉
They seem tu function like Amazon: you've looked once for xy, we're sure you will always want to buy xy.
Literally got more and more excited until the last line where you make it clear there is no current option of ' I would like to exchange currency for a copy of this I can understand '

Soon, I hope!
oh my god, what?! I love some of the obscure myths. And a lot of Roman ones that didn't jazz up the Greek ones will qualify.
I have always sought out "new" [well to me] myths and legends and would love to see your book published in English
I would like to read this...sounds promising if you can get it published in English!
this seems strange to me. I’m almost strictly a non-fiction reader, but this seems like a very intriguing book. Good luck in finding an English language publisher.
This sounds really neat. If it makes it stateside, I'd love to carry it in our shop.
The last person ON EARTH I would ask about the publishing industry is a publisher.

@TarkabarkaHolgy
See, this is right up my alley, and I was all set to find out how much for a copy... but I don't read Hungarian.

If you manage an English version, please let me know!
I don't know how much you'd be in their Genres but Canongate are pretty cool @canongatebooks
I hope you find an English publisher, or set up the Kickstarter. I want to buy this.
If you're looking to go the publishing house route maybe Strange Attractor would be a possibility--they publish non-fiction off the beaten path with a depth of research (though they are not an academic press), have books on subjects like paganism and tarot, and get distribution through MIT Press. Here's their catalogue https://strangeattractor.co.uk/shoppe/ and submission guideline. https://strangeattractor.co.uk/news/submission-guidelines/
