Anyone who goes through my post history, knows I work for Meta (Facebook).

I am "Consumer Content Administrative Manager". My primary duties include content appeals, account appeals, account reviews, and some peer review.

It is no surprise that my job depends on people using Facebook. Today, I am going to suggest, you not do so. I can make that suggestion because we have a user base of billions, and I know most people would keep using Facebook even if the Devil ran the company. People are strange.

But if you feel you can truly live without Facebook, do so. Internally, things are changing, and not for the better. You should especially consider leaving Meta if you are a minority, woman, LGBTQ+, trans, or identify as progressive, politically. If facts matter to you, and misinformation is something you do not want to be subject toward, you should especially consider leaving, Facebook.

You have no privacy from Meta, while using Meta. None. I do not care if you believe you disabled a "feature" or "opt out" of something. You only seem to have done so. And even if you're going to continue to use Meta, uninstall the app (all of them). We collect data on you, even when you're not using the app.

One further note about MAUs and the #Fediverse:

The common number for this month is 1.2M MAUs—but this has a giant caveat.

This doesn’t count #Threads, which has implemented many aspects of #ActivityPub

It also doesn’t count *most* #Misskey servers, which don’t publish MAUs—and Misskey makes up 9% of the Fediverse.

I also know that Friendica servers and MAUs are underreported.

So while that 1.2M MAUs figure is helpful, it’s not entirely accurate.

I don't use any Meta products personally, but I was pleased to learn about Lights Out Meta from a friend. It's a movement to get people to log out of all Meta platforms for the week of January 19-26.

Threads.net has been suspended on this server (darkmoon.social) due to Meta's policy decisions that enable systemic abuse and disinformation across its platforms.

This is a decision I've been mulling over for a while now, and recent events have pushed me to finally pull the trigger. I will not associate with fascists, even by proxy. I'm sorry to lose access to good content by people who have accounts there, but enough is enough.

As a reaction to the announcement of Meta from yesterday, I have decided to defederate Threads on mountains.social.

The video announcement and the more detailed information on The Verge (https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/7/24338471/meta-hate-speech-hateful-conduct-policy-moderation) made this ultimately an easy decision.

I simply cannot justify to federate with an instance, which explicitly says targeting minority groups is allowed (from which many of them call the Fediverse their home).

I will suspend Threads per Sunday January 19th. This will give people the time to migrate away from mountains.social, without losing connections with Thread users. In case you want to migrate and have issues, I'm happy to assist.

If any straight cis people are wondering why this is such a big deal, you might be missing the context that accusations of mental illness were used for decades as a way to criminalise gay people and put them in jail or worse (look up what happened to Alan Turing if you want to know what "worse" means).

When homophobic religious dogma started to wane, it was swiftly replaced by pseudoscientific psychological homophobia that persisted in textbooks until as late as the 1990s.

Homophobes basically just hate queer people, and look for any excuse to justify their prejudices rather than question their own motivations.

With today's news that Meta is getting rid of fact checkers and changing its policies to allow more hate speech directed at trans and queer people, seems like a good time to resurface these detailed instructions on how to block Threads.

As an intermediate step, if you're on #MastodonSocial or #MastodonOnline, you can block the entire domain of #Threads from any profile hosted there easily.

I really think @Mastodon and @mastodon.online need to defederate from #Threads at this point.

In the past I was, admittedly, a bit "meh, whatever", but a platform with those kind of "community guidelines" is really not something they should associate with.

So this is apparently NOT enough for mastodon.social to defederate Threads.

What a complete and utter betrayal.

Go try out #OwnCast it is a lot like #Twitch, but it is more free and doesn't have ads ruining the live streams.
