Must say there is something beautiful and healing about seeing a bunch of strangers in a #repairCafe helping each other fix their rice cookers, format their laptops, sew their teddy bears, patch up their clothes, figure out ways to solve problems with what they've got right there and each other.

Highly recommended activity to restore faith in ordinary people when we see so much cruelty from the top.

Auzina: Don't just buy #Canadian. Visit your local repair café too

Opinion by Aija Auzina, February 19, 2025

"We are living in unpredictable and shifting times. If we want to support Canadian businesses and not buy American, don’t buy the culture of complacency, greed and waste either. Change must be embraced with courage and responsibility.

"#Environmentalists are optimistically realistic. Members of the #Ottawa South Eco Action Network , #OSEAN, embrace doing what we can with what we have and finding friends to do it with. So if we can reduce waste by hosting a repair café, or teach people to mend the rips in their clothing, or help people plant a native pollinator patch in their garden, we will act on it. And finding friends in community, government and businesses helps us stand up to the wind that is no longer at our back, but in our face. Strength is in numbers.

"#ClimateChange is a part of the chain of the choices we make. Let that bracing wind in our face help us find the courage to do better. Come to the #RepairCafe or a #MendingCircle. Fix your personal items as a responsible owner does. It takes effort, work and a bit of courage. We can do this. We can do really hard things too.

"Another word for courage is political will. We need more of it. With provincial and federal elections looming, now is the time to know your own values and live by them.

"Ownership is a responsibility that the Feb. 22 Repair Café and the specialists from the #OttawaToolLibrary (#OTL) can help you with. Sign up on-site to have a 30-minute slot at one of the repair tables that will be set up in the Jim Durrell Recreation Centre’s Ellwood Hall. Enjoy a mug of coffee or tea while you wait, in the pop up café.

"OSEAN, a group of volunteers, is helping organize the event with Alta Vista Coun. Marty Carr, and the good people of the tool library have the starring role. Come meet these influencers.

"How do we influence change? Be the example for others to follow. And where are we going? Toward a deep responsibility to our #nvironment. One step can be at the repair café, for instance with that toaster that stopped working.

"But we can’t stop working! Individual people and systems need to pivot toward responsible ownership, responsible living. The gale force wind gusts that rattle your windows and house over the last years show we have been negligent toward that responsibility. The fires in Los Angeles are also burning with that same message.

"We have not been living up to our responsibilities. Individuals, governments, industry, businesses big and small, still have not clocked the fact that we have our backs against the wall. We believe someone else will clean up after us. But mom will not come to your rescue. #MotherEarth is depleted and we did this to her. "

#Alabama: #RepairCafe Returning to #Tuscaloosa #PublicLibrary After First Event's Success

#repaircafe today. 2025 seems to have been a real change for us. We averaged about 25 items per session last year but we did 37 last month and 46 today. We made the decision to extend the length of the session today by an hour and we're opening twice a month too. Let's see how March goes...

Henry Hoover in bits on the table. There's not much to say about this photo. Tools and electrical bits on the table along with bits of Henry.
Our white board showing the 46 items that came into the Repair Café today. A good mix of items too.
One of our electrical repairs. This shows a table covered in electrical bits and tools. A pair of hands are in a box of bits. It's not clear what they are fixing.
Ladies hands hold what looks to me to be a fancy shower cap. on the table are also a sewing machine, a tape measure and other sewing items.

Looking for advice — I was adding the first of eight grommets to this quilted backpack and it cut all the way thru; I think I was using the wrong tool

I’d really like to save this piece. The metal grommets were the last step and I don’t want to lose all that work! But I also don’t want to add bigger grommets.

Is there any other option? Suggest anything and everything - I’m sad it screwed up and stuck

With all the political news around, a personal positive note: I had some successful repairs at the #repaircafe yesterday!
An older Thinkpad on which the power button only worked some times was fixed with a small, several times folded piece of paper.
And a Macbook Air with water damage looked like only the USB-C's were damaged (and corroded). Some alcohol to clean and all was good again!

#RepairCafé In #EastBrunswickNJ Will Help Keep Items Out Of Landfills

by Sarah Salvadore, January 9, 2025

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — "The East Brunswick Public #Library and the East Brunswick #Sustainability Task Force are organizing their first-ever Repair Café.

"This community-based initiative will help residents keep still usable items out of landfills by promoting repairs instead of throwing them out.

"Any item in need of repairs can be brought in to be fixed on the spot. Volunteer repairers will be on hand to help.

"Residents can bring clothing/textiles (shirts, pants, sweaters, knitted blankets, etc.) and jewelry (bracelets, necklaces, earrings, etc.).

"Examples of repairs can be an afghan with moth holes, pants with a tear in the knee, broken links on necklaces and bracelets that are coming undone.

"The Repair Café will be held at the library, 2 Jean Walling Civic Center Drive, on Sunday, Jan. 26 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m."

#BurnhamOnSea #RepairCafe returns today to fix household items for free

January 8, 2025

"Burnham-On-Sea Repair Cafe returns today (Wednesday, January 8th) with volunteers on hand to help repair household items.

"The Burnham-On-Sea repair cafe is held every first Wednesday of the month from 10am-1pm at the Waffle Hub in Burnham’s College Street at the Methodist Church.

"The free service launched in 2023 for local residents to help them save money by getting items fixed, avoiding new purchases, and also reducing the number of items that go unnecessarily to landfill.

"Leader Biddy Hammond told Burnham-On-Sea.com: 'Around 500 items have been repaired by our wonderful team of volunteers over the past year.'

"'We can’t repair everything that is brought in, but our team will have a look and make an assessment whether they can help or refer to other specialists.'

"'Around 70% of the things brought in are repaired or fixed, saving people money and avoiding it going to #landfill.'

"'Why throw it away when you can try the Repair Cafe? Clothing, furnishings, small household electricals and other items, including toys and portable items, can be brought along to our willing band of volunteers. There’s no charge, although donations are welcome.'

"The #HighbridgeRepairCafe is held every third Saturday of the month at The Purple Spoon, YMCA, #Highbridge from 10:00am – 1:00pm."

#WashingtonStateRepairCafes - #RepairCafes & #FixIts

The What

- Repair Cafes & Fix-its (or Fix-it Fairs/Repair Fairs/Repair Cafés) are free community gatherings in which people with repair skills share their time and talents to fix their neighbors’ belongings.
- These gatherings can be organized by friends, a neighborhood group, a nonprofit organization, or even a city or county entity. They range in size from a handful of people to a few hundred!

The How & Why

- Organizers designate a time and place for people to gather and community members bring items that are broken, torn, or otherwise non-functional.
- Then, volunteer fixers do their utmost to get the items back in working order (at no cost to the community member) while sharing information about the repair process with the item’s owner.
- When feasible, a fixer may invite the owner of an item to participate in the repair in order to boost knowledge and confidence that anyone can fix things!
- This not only creates an opportunity to spark meaningful connections with others and help community members get new life out of beloved possessions, it saves items from going to the landfill!

Common services

- Bike repair
- Sewing and mending
- Small appliance and electronic tinkering
- Woodworking
- Knife and tool sharpening
- Jewelry repair
- Computer and device repair

Other Services

Groups may choose to add other “stations” that draw on unique talents, interests, or needs in their community. These may include things like:

- Plant and Seed Swap
- Gardening advice and soil analysis
- Paper and Fabric Crafting
- Free Table (where you can bring things you no longer need and pick up items you do)
- Haircuts
- Instrument repair
- Word-Smithing (advice on resumes, creative writing, and more)

Today we loaded all the tools,
And went to Boothstown #RepairCafe.
It wasn't too busy,
But we still did a few good repairs.
I repaired a folding table,
And an electric drill.
Then modified a slider to fit a coat zip, before repairing a necklace.
Then we stayed for their AGM,
And the volunteers Christmas party.
Ate far too much food,
And still brought some home.
That made an easy dinner with Mum,
But Sue and I are so stuffed.
Watched a few videos,
While Star Wars was on TV.
Now very tired,
So off to bed.

There is a brand new repair cafe starting in St Athan on Wednesday 15th January & they need volunteers!

You don't need DIY skills to be essential to a repair cafe. Front of house, data input, drinks makers, & social media volunteers are all needed to make a repair cafe run smoothly.

If you can fix anything including electricals, textiles, toys, computers, bicycles, or anything else, you will be incredibly valuable.

Start the new year by helping out in your local community.

Some pics from our Repair Café yesterday in Coventry Central Library.

We had more visitors than usual and had to start telling people they might have to wait a long time only 45mins into our 3 hour session as we already had a big queue by then.

We repaired 30 items including a coffee machine, a china ornament, a jacket zip, 2 radios, an electronic toy, a hedge trimmer, a sewing machine and a pair of boots.

#RepairCafe #Repair #Sustainability
Two volunteer repairers fixing a coffee machine. One is engrossed in what they are doing, the other is looking to camera and is giving a thumbs up.
One of our volunteer repairers fixing a radio. The photo only shows a close-up of her hands as she is reaching inside it. One of her hands is covered in notes to self written in biro. The radio is in a kind of white and pink chintzy case.
Close-up of repair to a coffee machine. The owner is holding a phone to take a picture of the inside while the volunteer repairers is pointing at a particular part.
A cute record player. One of those that is in a kind of travelling case. It is a special edition branded 'Virgin' record player, numbered 21 out of only 100 that were made. It was given to the owner for her 21st birthday.

The biggest thank you to everyone who came to our January #RepairCafe. We received £84.69 in donations!

Your donations go towards parking for our volunteers, putting volunteers through PAT testing training, consumables (plugs batteries, cables) so we have stuff on hand for your repairs, and small repayments to set up costs and upgrades to our equipment.

Every penny helps but no donation is required so don't feel you need to donate to come along.

Alex, a man with short grey hair and glasses on top of his head, looks at the camera while working on a toaster. Around him on the table are lots of bits of fixing equipment. Behind him are several other volunteers all working on different things at other tables.
