One reason why I doubt the Great Migration to #RedNote won't really last is that people are already getting banned left and right. Red Note is by design trying to remain in a perpetual state of "this app that kids use to do fun and silly things that kids enjoy doing" by eliminating any form of negativity, at the expense of serving as a platform for social justice or becoming a source of general news. It's the early years of Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok if they already had monetization options. That means:

- no shit talking or "jokes" that are just racist stuff
- no obvious criticism of any kind (back-handed compliment might not get flagged)
- no pseudoscience
- no excessive filters
- no content theft or impersonation
- no flaunting of your wealth
- no inflammatory content or rage baiting
- kinda no politics unless it's to speak of openness and collaboration
- no complaining about how this is all fabricated to maintain people happy under their regime

And they are quick to ban and they won't waste time with your appeal. And I'm not even mad. Those are the rules for that specific app and we have so many other outlets to be angry. Red Note is to me an oasis of cute puppies, yummy recipes, cool tips and camping gear only available in China. It will actively push any negativity away from the app and lots of westerners are already complaining that they have lasted less than 24h before getting a ban for seemingly the most minor offenses.

(This is being edited)

I've been reading up on the #RedNote app and it's by and largely hilarious.

From what I've read, may be incorrect but anyway, US government threatening to shut down US branch of TikTok so a fair few users have jumped to the Chinese RedNote app. Apparently it was raised by a bilingual Asian guy in Vancouver who put together a how-to to join and for some of the #TikTok folk to check it out, the Americans thought he was the CEO. Now there seems to be a mass of predominantly US folk downloading the app and looking into learning Mandarin. Which is brilliant to be fair.

The app itself is incredibly invasive, more so than TikTok 😱. The Chinese have a fantastic sense of cutting dry humour too. The Americans on RedNote are now learning that they've been fed bullshit propaganda and I'm interested to see where this goes.

Just adding the Chinese are using VPNs to get around censorship whereas the Americans are using RedNote to get around censorship. It's mind boggling.

RedNote are hastily bringing in translators to assist with folk crossing over, increasing ad reach outside of China and the app is currently number one in both main app stores.

But yeah, to reflect, the Chinese are teaching them Mandarin, and the Americans are teaching them English, and that really warms my heart.

Honestly the amount of people saying that Chinese people are so nice on RedNote is kinda amusing. I was thinking, just how bad is *their* social media?? Then I went back to Twitter and remembered hahahah
(I don't have Tiktok because the brainrot there is an IQ killer)
FYI, tbh Americans got lucky with #RedNote - it's an app with a large female base, more like Pinterest than anything. If they had chosen Weibo, whoooboooy. I think diplomatic relations would crumble there and then.
But tbh, Chinese are mostly nice to waiguoren. But they will be mean if you offend them, 100%

I’m not making any value judgements on China or its society. I am simply reporting Americans experience of talking directly to mainland Chinese people for the first time via #TikTokBan

When you realize we're losing to China at 4D Chess don't feel too bad, they invented it.

It's called Go.

If you have Meta apps on your phone, consider deleting at least one of them. Don’t have to delete your account. But take some action . IG, Whatsapp, Facebook, Threads, Messenger..

Because fuck Washington. They respond to pressure, always remember, but if we’ve learned anything it’s this: positive change requires real pressure by the people. Congress is full of asshats that have no interest in doing a good job, only lining their own pockets at our expense.

Absolutely hilarious seeing USians in awe of how awesome and ahead of the curve China is by experiencing #RedNote. Come on, folks, it’s a social media app in a nation known for censorship. If an alien knew the US only from Instagram’s recommendation page they’d think the US is nothing but beautiful scenery and amazing cities.

About the only thing one should conclude from the experience is that China’s influencers have better production values than US’s influencers.

People on #RedNote are asking USians to be respectful and mindful when interacting with Chinese folks.

They have no idea what’s coming, the poor slobs.

It is not a news that #TikTok ban is almost a fact now and many Americans have discovered the REDnote app as an alternative and migrating there. After landing on this new app and interacting with Chinese counterparts many in America are for a cultural shock and I was seeing a few of their reactions. What really struck me is a common theme that I saw in at least half a dozen American reactions. All of them said something similar to "Oh god.. they can afford food.. lots of food" and that is a real shocker for me, a reaction coming from a supposedly rich America!

Current social media forecast for Friday, January 17th, 2025.

Strong legal headwinds are driving many users from #TikTok to #Instagram, Google shorts, and ironically, #RedNote, another Chinese app.

Meanwhile, increasingly regressive vibes from Meta's Zuck are driving many Instagram users to #Pixelfed

In turn, Pixelfed recently officially launched it's own mobile app.

Forecast calls for continuing rain of cat and dog photos, although it's not clear where they will be landing by next week.

I just got through having a conversation with someone on REDnote about Marx's Labor Theory of Value, and they brought up how they learned about it in middle school and asked me if I learned it in school. I then had to explain to them that Americans don't learn about Marxism in school and about the Crucial Communism Teaching Act that will indoctrinate students into hating Marxism.

900 MILLION Chinese people suffer from mental health issues! This should be treated like a national emergency. That's almost 3 times the population of America! Also, in China, mental health issues aren't talked about openly and mental health resources are scarce. This is unacceptable. #China #rednote #xiaohongshu

Second reference I've seen regarding the warm welcome given to new US users of #RedNote

Ps... "Also the Chinese users love, and I mean LOVE, #LuigiMangione. He is apparently broadly adored in China."😎

In #China it's legal to execute corrupt rich pigs😎
Just one. They'll all line up,

China gives a wary welcome to influx of 'TikTok refugees' on RedNote

The influx of more than 700,000 new users has been driven by a looming U.S. ban on TikTok, used by 170 million Americans, on national security concerns.

"Days ahead of a #USSC decision that could determine whether the popular short-video app shuts down starting Sunday, a number of users appear to be turning to an app called #RedNote — more commonly known to its majority-Chinese audience by its Chinese name, #Xiaohongshu.

It’s a surprising choice since Xiaohongshu is Chinese-owned, and such ties are the reason U.S. lawmakers moved to ban #TikTok..."
