“I showed up the following Monday promptly at two to find the bar mostly empty and miraculously quiet. The bartender handed me a card that listed the six #records he'd be playing with informative and well-written descriptions, a kind of record menu for a session titled ‘Spiritual & Ambient Jazz’” — A largely fruitless search for an American “kissa” https://www.stereophile.com/content/brilliant-corners-8-can-kissa151jazz-listening-parlors151work-us #jazz #kissa #audiophile #vinyl #music #nyc

Silverchair Copyright Joint Authorship Dispute

'Twice during the memoir, Gillies brings into contention the true authorship of Tomorrow – which is officially credited to Johns and Gillies – claiming that Joannou co-wrote the song too. This is no small claim. Tomorrow has generated millions of dollars in royalties for the songwriters; it was the most-played track on US modern rock radio in 1995, a year in which Wonderwall by Oasis, Better Man by Pearl Jam and When I Come Around by Green Day were all jostling for high rotation. The single sold over a quarter of a million copies in Australia before the label removed it from sale, for fear of overexposure; it has since been licensed to video games Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Suffice to say: it has been a nice little earner.'

Coldplay and their former manager have filed competing claims in London's High Court, with each party seeking millions of pounds from the other.
https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-67052503
Dave Holmes, who worked with the band from 2005 to 2022, sued them in August for £10 million in unpaid commission.

In a counter-claim, the group rejected his claim and said Holmes had allowed tour costs to spiral out of control, and demanded £14 million in damages.

The Panics https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/the-j-files/the-panics-perth-band-songs-jae-laffer-cruel-guards-award/102672630 Twenty years ago The Panics (Jae Laffer, Drew Wootton, Paul Otway, Jules Douglas and Myles Wootton) released their debut record A House on a Street in a Town I'm From. It was brimming with sun-streaked visions and hazy memories of the people, places and experiences of their hometown Perth. It was clear straight away that this band was onto something special.

Across five critically acclaimed albums (including ARIA and J Award winner Cruel Guards), a handful of EPs, relentless touring and massive tracks like 'Don’t Fight It', 'Creaks' and 'My Best Mistake' the band have helped soundtrack some of the key moments in our lives.

Singer Jae Laffer guides us through the story of the band, from screen-printing Panics T-shirts in high school art class to being scouted by the Happy Mondays drummer Gaz Whelan to performing on stage with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. #music

Do yourself a favor and get #earplugs for about 30-50€ which usually come with a decent transport box.

Those are so much better than the usual 30 Cent foam thingies where you only hear low frequencies.

Unfortunately, it was only a couple of months ago that I've learned about them. So many #music #concerts would have been a dramatically better experience in sound. 😔

Universal Music, Sony Music Entertainment, Capitol, and other record labels filed a copyright lawsuit on Friday against Internet Archive, founder Brewster Kahle, and others over the organization’s “Great 78 Project,” accusing them of behaving as an “illegal record store.” The suit lists 2,749 pre-1972 musical works available via Internet Archive by late artists, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Berry, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Bing Crosby, among others. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/record-labels-sue-internet-archive-412-million-copyright-infringement-lawsuit-1234806058/ #copyright #music #internetarchive #libraries

‘Critics wanted us to be a one-hit-wonder’: back in Barbie world with Aqua https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/aug/07/one-hit-wonder-barbie-world-with-aqua?CMP=share_btn_tw “The song Barbie Girl is a social comment and was not created or approved by the makers of the doll,” stated the CD booklet, but it was subject to a lawsuit from Mattel, who sued over the song’s lyrics (“I’m a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world” and “kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky” wasn’t exactly the stuff of brand partnerships). A court eventually ruled in the band’s favour asserting the song was protected as a parody and by 2008 Mattel was using a family-friendly version for its own Barbie commercial. #copyright #trademark #music #parody
