we always had a decentralized model for group membership but the prior implementation had several edge cases that would result in difficulties to effectively leave groups, and other issues. The new implementation is based on extensive simulations and tests, before it was implemented and released, putting to rest systematically all #P2P group membership issues that occured in the last years. Group membership consistency is also important for end-to-end encryption security.

Last #deltachat releases introduced stable #p2p group membership not found in any other messenger. Members can add/remove peers also while being offline, and when everything comes online again, everyone has the same consistent membership view. We formalized and ran a simulation model using #TLA+ (invented by Leslie Lamport of vector clock fame):

Ethernet networking uses "webxdc realtime API" implemented via @n0iroh gossip channels.

Basically VMs are wired to an Ethernet that is constrained to chat members only and uses forward-secret encryption with #p2p connections. Result: Telnet and netcat are similarly secure as signal but with Peer-to-peer networking :)

People like to say "email leaks metadata" but consider this: Delta apps do not store group metadata (memberlists, group names, avatars, keys) on servers. By comparison,

- #matrix stores group metadata unencrypted on home servers and replicates it to other federated matrix servers

- #signal stores encrypted group metadata on Amazon cloud servers

#deltachat uses a #p2p messaging model for encrypted group metadata where servers function as transport only.

I like #p2p technologies but I think prefer the possibility to migrate between server.

yes, there are futures where servers play less of a role than they do today. We are thinking/prototyping on that.

But already today, #webxdc realtime apps eg at https://delta.chat/en/2024-11-20-webxdc-realtime#pixel-app-small-offline-first-and-realtime are using @n0iroh and thus offer a private #p2p network. Here, the rather reliable #SMTP server network is used to bootstrap lots of little private P2P ones consisting of unstable peers. Without this bootstrapping you need central root servers along with DHTs or other mechanism for discovery.

La unica variable que hace invencible al P2P es la masividad... y con la perdida de ella, llega el declive y la muerte

Y si lo llevamos un paso mas alla, y le añadimos almacenamiento distribuido, conseguiriamos un #internet resilente sin parangon al #capitalismo, la UTOPIA sin precedentes, ciudadana pura, sin aditivos toxicos
