Egads. Just saw a #permaculture recommendation of brown mustard in burn scars to remediate lead and other heavy metals.

Please don’t plant any variety of mustard in burn scars. It’s a very invasive plant that will result in vast fields of an annual that dries out by late summer leaving flashy fuels tall enough to ladder a grass fire into a canopy fire.

Mustard seeds scattered by Spanish colonizers so they could retrace their steps is a significant reason why some SoCal landscapes have changed from chaparral that burns every decade or two to grasslands that can burn every year

Also, for those who harvest rainwater, it’s exciting to be able to deliver that water directly to plant roots in an efficient way. #permaculture

Olla update: I’ve had my #garden ollas in place for 2 weeks now and they are still half to 2/3 full of water. The seedlings around them have grown steadily. We’ve had light rain once in the last two weeks. The true test will be when temperatures start to soar, but so far this #irrigation method has been impressively easy & efficient. It’s wild to know that an #ancienttechnology can still be so useful and relevant. I love clay! #pottery #ceramics #keramik #permaculture #gardening #ollasbyosa
Two terracotta pots with lids. The one on the left is larger than the one on the right. They both are curved forms with a narrower neck decorated with textured rings. Each has a lid that features carved geometric pattern decoration. The background is plain, sage green.
A photo of the mouth of an olla that has been submerged in a garden bed. There are mulch and seedlings surrounding it. My hand holding the olla lid is in the foreground, slightly blurred.

It is a new 15 minute video about soil restoration in a very degraded part of Spain. There is much encouragement here.

Imagine if we did this in degraded parts of the wheatbelt!

"No front porches. My uncle says there used to be front porches. And people sat there sometimes at night, talking when they wanted to talk, rocking, and not talking when they didn't want to talk. Sometimes they just sat there and thought about things, turned things over. My uncle says the architects got rid of the front porches because they didn't look well. But my uncle says that was merely rationalizing it; the real reason, hidden underneath, might be they didn't want people sitting like that, doing nothing, rocking, talking; that was the wrong KIND of social life. People talked too much. And they had time to think. So they ran off with the porches."

our new apiary is underway. we started with a open piece of pasture and have gotten here in about 2 weekends. took about 6,000 lbs of shale shoveled by hand. all that's left to do now is string the electric wire (bear country), hook up the solar setup, and transport our hives from our current apiary.

this site has a very slight slope so at west end of the yard we've created a large raised bed from the soil and sod we had to excavate from the site. this bed will act as a sponge, absorbing any water runoff and will provide moisture to whatever we end up planting there (most likely a native wildflower mix.)

#introduction
My husband and I (and our dog, of course) make our agrarian adventures in the Appalachian mountains where we raise honey bees, coturnix quail, vegetables and fruits, microgreens, and more. We have a lovely rescue rabbit we adore, named Siegfried, who keeps us well-stocked with some of nature's best fertilizer.

Formerly Tickfoot on another server I took a long (and refreshing) social media hiatus and am excited to meet like-minded folks on here again.

I also thought this was a very cool bit of circular repurposing - the herb roots grow in a mat within the #hydroponic tube, which they peel out to clean the tubes when the crops have finished. They dry them off and then use them to grow #microgreens on, then eventually the whole thing gets composted.

#Permaculture
A dry, dense fibrous root mat which you can see is the same width as the pipes, with a circular depression where the plant was removed.

I love the ideas and principles of permaculture.

I also can't help seeing how it plays out around me as somewhat resembling a pyramid scheme: go on a permaculture course, .... some time later.... start offering permaculture courses. Oops!

Am I being unfair? Do you see this pattern emerge too?

The next day Laureleen invited us to visit her familys place 12km further.
Imagine a huge oasis, a #permaculture garden with greenhouses built into the ground😍 An innovative concept to benefit from the earth's temperature regulation capability. The built in #aquaponics create a tropical climate to grow a diverse assortment of eatable plants. Melon, cucumber, pumkin, even passionfruit climbing towards the ceiling, delicious strawberrys, salad etc covering the soil.
