A couple of days ago, I was once again thinking about what would push me to emigrate from the UK

I was prompted by far-right, autism-badmouthing, ‘gender-critical’ extremist Kemi Badenoch becoming leader of the UK opposition (and probable prime minister in waiting)

This time I looked to see whether I’d be able to emigrate to the Netherlands

Probably not, it seems, at least not without a strong case for seeking asylum (by which time it might be too late)

I’m not really the kind of immigrant that other countries are looking for – unfit for work, disabled, trans – and post-Brexit, I’ve lost the right to live anywhere in the EU

So I was feeling pretty bad about that when I heard about the US election results

There are a lot of people in the US who now have a strong case for seeking asylum elsewhere in the world – and I sincerely hope they are able to find it
