This night, it was very clear. A ship approaches on the river, its bright navigation lights shining directly toward the photographer. Despite the glare, the delicate presence of Mercury can still be seen in the sky.

A calm river at dusk after sunset, its still surface reflecting the soft colors of the evening sky. The bright planet Venus shines prominently above, casting a shimmering reflection on the water. Near the yellowish horizon, just above the tree line on the riverbank, the faint glow of Mercury is visible. In the center of the image, a ship approaches on the river, its bright navigation lights shining directly toward the photographer. Despite the glare, the delicate presence of Mercury can still be seen in the sky.

Crop from a photo taken a little later: Mercury is now just about to disappear behind the trees on the horizon.

Crop from a photo with the river and the stars, showing only the weak dot of Mercury next to the branches of trees.

A calm river reflecting the fading light of dusk after sunset. The water's surface is smooth, mirroring the deepening hues of the evening sky. Above the distant tree line on the riverbank, the bright planet Venus shines prominently, its reflection shimmering on the water. Near the yellowish horizon, just above the trees, the faint glow of Mercury is also visible, adding to the serene and celestial atmosphere of the scene.

Amongst my three attempts at astrophotography, this was the one somewhat successful excursion. The biggest lesson I learned that night is that when a pack of coyotes about 100 ft away howl, don’t panic. I was sure I’d get eaten.

I took copious notes from that night but have since misplaced them; the two brightest stars are planets. Don’t remember which ones, though.

A starry sky with a yellow glow hovers over a fog shrouded hill. The Milky Way is rising from the left, and a foggy orange glow from traffic outlines the silhouette of trees on the bottom right.

The #NightSky over #LaSilla in #Chile at 1:18 UTC, with the #comet at the horizon and lots of other sky objects labeled, including four #planets (currently the subject of the global false internet meme that they have "lined up" or something; here you see that they are actually spread all over the sky).

Januar - April 2025

On January 21, 2025 there will be a planetary alignment of six planets. Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus, and Saturn will all be visible at the same time. All but Neptune will be visible to the naked eye.

This image is a depiction of a planet map from the Northern Hemisphere.

More on the event, complete with a detailed schedule for all regions:

In 2017, I crocheted myself a solar system costume. The headpiece is mounted on a bike helmet for stability (I got that tip from some folks who build showgirl costumes). The tunic is made from fine black linen yarn, very matte, very tedious, much like I imagine space is most of the time. The planets are made using an online sphere pattern generator, so that I could vary the sizes in a predictable way; they are strung on a fishing line with beads, and suspended from an elastic collar, also crocheted. They are also kept in place with a beaded "asteroid belt", located between Mars and Jupiter, of course. Photographed at Manhattan Beach Pier. All second-hand yarns, though I had to ask around for enough yellow to make the sun so large. #solarsystem #crochet #costume #planets #sun #astronomy #planetary #yesplutotoo
A woman (me) standing on a pier at the beach, wearing a crocheted solar system costume, including a large yellow sun-shaped headpiece and a black tunic, and a line of crocheted balls representing the planets, secured at the waist with a glittery beaded belt.

Topic 8: The solar system

Book:
How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming, by Mike Brown

If you are in my generation, Pluto losing its spot as a planet is likely a sore topic for you. I was therefore delighted to find this book, and learn more about just what the heck happened and why. By the end of the book I was not only stunned by the amount of work that went into the process, but I also learned to understand why Pluto is not a planet anymore.
