One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco at the moment is Yemeni Kabab & Mediterranean near Market & Taylor.

The traditional haneeth, kabsa and mandi plates are excellent. The mezzes are fantastic. They have very affordable lunch plates too, and I love the tea they offer. One of those small homey places with seriously good food and vibes.

It’s much better than restaurants in that category that cost 2x more.

You can visit the decommissioned bank vault of the former flagship headquarters branch of #BankOfAmerica in #SanFrancisco's Financial District.
Photograph of the long, dimly-lit, and starkly cold-seeming interior of a decommissioned bank vault. The floor is bare concrete, while new HVAC and track lighting hang from the ceiling. The room’s walls are lined with hundreds of steel safe deposit boxes that vary in size from that of a desk drawer to large cabinets. Many of the boxes’ doors hang open or are missing altogether. A scattering of tool boxes and electrical cords lie on the floor.
Photograph of the open doorway of a decommissioned bank vault. Set in thick raw concrete, a massive steel door is swung open to the left; while dials and buttons are attached to a steel plate on the door’s right. A fabric tape stretches across the doorway between two stanchions. The vault’s dimly-lit interior is visible through the open doorway.
Photograph of a sign mounted to a post. Bare concrete walls are visible in the background. The white sign is framed in black and and, in black text, reads:

"BANK VAULT
CLOSED

But feel free to peek inside!

This historic building was constructed in 1971 as Bank of America’s flagship location. The lower levels were used for vaults, safety deposit boxes, and office space. Prior to the ICA SF activating the building, it has been vacant for a decade-with the original vault preserved.”

Below this text are two photographs that show historical views of the interior and exterior of the bank building. A stylized square logo that reads “ICA+SF AT THE CUBE” is in the lower left corner of the placard.
Photograph of a heavy, vertical steel plate set in a raw concrete wall. On it is mounted a row of several square buttons labeled “TIMELOCK,” “POWER,” “OPEN,” and “CLOSE.” Below them are two unlabeled small round dials, and one unlabeled, very large dial. Near the top of the image, a sticker that reads “WARNING: CARE MUST BE TAKEN OF VAULT LOCKS TO AVOID ALL DANGER OF LOCKOUTS” is applied to the plate. The sticker also has several lines of small, bulleted text printed below the warning headline. Through a narrow portion of an open doorway to the plate’s left, the dimly-lit interior of a decommissioned bank vault can be seen in the background.

"And then today, across the country, millions of people turned out for #HandsOff protests...

In #SanFrancisco, where Buddy and I joined a protest, what jumped out to me was how many of the signs in the crowd called for the protection of the U.S. Constitution, our institutions, and the government agencies that keep us safe."

San Francisco handed #SCOTUS the chance to weaken the #CleanWaterAct -- and they took it.

This ruling will make it easier for polluters to pollute, and harder for regulators to protect the health of people and the environment. Really shameful.

“Three men wearing MAGA hats and Department of Government Efficiency T-Shirts stormed several offices inside San Francisco City Hall Friday demanding that workers hand over documents, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The employees refused their requests and called sheriff’s deputies, at which time the individuals fled the building.”

Joshua Norton war ein Geschäftsmann aus #SanFrancisco. 1859 ernannte er sich zum Kaiser der #USA. Seine Befehle, den Kongress und später die Parteien aufzulösen, wurden allerdings ignoriert.

San Francisco, Calif. Apr. 1942. Residents of Japanese ancestry obtaining information on evacuation. Evacuees will be housed in War Relocation Authority centers for the duration

The image depicts a historical scene from April 1942 in San Francisco, California. A group of individuals is gathered around tables interacting with various documents and forms. The people are predominantly dressed in formal attire such as suits, ties, hats, and dresses indicative of mid-20th-century fashion. Several men wear fedoras or other types of hats.

In the background, there's a banner that reads "San Francisco, Calif., Apr 1942," suggesting this event is part of historical records pertaining to Japanese-American evacuations during World War II under the U.S. Army War Relocation Authority (WRA). The setting appears to be an indoor facility with limited natural light, likely intended for processing and registering individuals.

Several people are focused on their tasks at hand: some appear to be filling out forms or verifying documents while others converse in groups, indicating a communal atmosphere within the context of this mandatory relocation. There is also text overlaid on top of the image that states "Residents of Japanese ancestry obtaining information on evacuation." It further clarifies that evacuees will be housed in WRA centers for an unspecified duration.

The overall composition captures a moment during wartime when forced displacement was part of official policy, depicting both the bureaucratic aspects and human interactions involved. The photograph is attributed to Dorothea Lange (per NARA), who do [...]

San Francisco:
REPORT ICE activities and get legal assistance

If you see Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in San Francisco, you can call the 24-hour hotline 415-200-1548 to report them. When receiving a call, the San Francisco Rapid Response Network will do a raid verification in order to “dispel myths and lessen fear.”

#Trump #SanFrancisco #immigration

If someone is detained by ICE in San Francisco, you can also call the hotline for emergency legal representation.

Save the number 415-200-1548 on your phone.

https://missionlocal.org/2025/01/immigrants-resources-before-trump-inauguration/

(note from the longer PSA: DO NOT report UNCONFIRMED raids on social media. Confirm them before passing word, don't help ICE sow panic with fakes and rumors.

ICE may try to create shadows of raids where they do not have the resources to hit simply in an attempt to scare people out of the US.)

Happy to welcome #JustinTrudeau anytime in the other #CA (#California).

It’s nuts to me that the Tenderloin in SF has a thriving Vietnamese, Mayan and Yemeni community with incredible food and grocery stores yet the rest of the city just sees this place as a hell hole.

I can get Yucatán street food on the streets, Honduran food on the corner, boat noodles just like in Thailand, many regional types of pho and Yemeni food and chips.

It's peak Turrell skyspace viewing season

My latest blog post is an art PSA for people in the San Franciso area. You might think "peak season" is for picking apples and leaf-peeping, but it also applies to art installations. Go see The Three Gems at sunset in the next two weeks.

I will protect you by dancing. #Urban #StreetSigns #ValenciaStreet #TheMission #SanFrancisco
Photo of a sign attached to the vertical, wooden post of a dining “parklet” shelter on a city street and sidewalk. The scene is empty of people, and the natural light is gray and overcast. The overall effect is lonely.

The sign itself is green and white and resembles a typical, official street parking regulation sign. It reads:

I WILL PROTECT YOU BY DANCING

I know the odds for this are slim, but my partner #lost his bag which had the red hat I knit him for Christmas. He got in a car at #SFO yesterday/Sunday and the #driver wasn't using an app, quoted him a price higher than Uber, with no official means of receipt (meaning work won't reimburse him), so he got out, but accidentally left his leather bag in the back seat.

If you know anyone who drives at the #SanFrancisco airport or in the #BayArea, please pass this message to them! My partner will pay $150 for the bag and its contents (clothes, a cheesy love note I packed for him, and a red knit hat - cat not included).

25 boosts - punny love note reveal...
A hand-knit wine-red cabled hat is resting on the flank of a brown tabby cat looking alert (or upset that he's "modeling" a hat when he wasn't allowed to eat the yarn).

Yes on K: Turn the Great Highway into a great park

Prop K would turn the Upper Great Highway into a permanent ocean-side park. I'm not going to tell you all the good, sensible reasons to vote Yes on K. Just the reasons I'm voting for it.
