Wild passion fruit flower on a moss covered rock. Seen while hiking on Oahu, Hawaii.

Symbolically, the name 'passion flower' refers to the passion of Jesus. Spanish Christian missionaries adopted the plant as representative of the last days of Jesus and especially his crucifixion. The flower's five petals and five petallike sepals represented the 10 apostles who remained faithful to Jesus. The circle of hairlike rays above the petals suggested the crown of thorns worn by Jesus. The three stigmas on the passionflower are said to represent the three nails that held him to the cross.
