This article from the Australian news site "Crikey" touches on much more than just current goings on in the run up to the Australian election. The author argues that the Murdoch news empire is being cannibalized by the forces Murdoch himself helped unleash, and that this empire is in decline not just in Australia but in the US and the UK too.

Much to think about here. I wonder whether similar forces are at work in countries beyond the English speaking world where moguls have used media power to push their right wing agendas; Bolloré and the late and unlamented ( at least by me) Berlusconi come to mind.

2025 election: The Murdoch media no longer matters

"Migration tipped to plummet" lol

The Labor gov has repeatedly created immigration targets which itself has allowed to blow past. Temporary visas are demand-driven and without caps there's zero chance immigration would suddenly fall.

"there are also 92,000 people on protection visas yet to be deported, while there are almost 350,000 on bridging visas who will have to leave the country in the next two to three years"

Fat chance. I predict a large % will refuse to leave voluntarily.

"...migration cuts that cause migration levels to whipsaw up and down, instead of settling back to a more stable normal"

erm, no - people from developing countries want to come to Australia no matter what. The top three are China, India and Philippines.

"Without such high levels of migration, Australia’s population growth rate would collapse."

No, it won't the reason why the fertility rate is so low is because cost of living and the housing crisis which is exacerbated by immigration. However, this *is* a trend experienced by all developed nations and the Aus Gov has done shit all to introduce policies to encourage people to start families. Like, why import tons of Muslims and risk destabilising social cohesion as seen in Germany / Sweden / France?
