what are the "Delta Chat missionaries" saying? 🤔 I am one of the #DeltaChat developers and I don't think any of us claim Delta Chat is some "state of the art" perfect or "the best", "the fastest" etc as other messengers boldly do.

The selection of parameters of comparison in your messenger table is also subject to what you think is important, it is hard to be neutral, also it seems the "metadata protection" field is not completely correct for Delta Chat:

Isn't it ironic that a messenger that utilizes email protocols under the hood is pretty resistant to spam? For decades most people equated email with "spam" and yet, here we are. It's not the email protocols that cause spam but the fact that email adresses have been used as identity. #deltachat is moving away from this email address-as-identity model towards a cryptography based model where only chat contacts know your identity, and email is "just" the globally federated transport.

If you are using #deltachat with a #chatmail profile with private contacts there is no chance you are going to get spam. Why?

1) Spammers can't contact you based on your phone number like with other messengers.

2) Nobody knows your private address or cryptographic key except your contacts. Without that spammers/phishers can't contact you.

3) if joining a public group with unknown members better use a second chat profile which you can mute/remove as needed.

@Delta Chat - a #security question.

I am doing some security revamping to my #Debian desktop. Apart from regular level (disk encryption, login password, KeePassXC), I am adding master passwords to applications that do not connect with KeePass. While I have my keys and credentials already store there, I cannot find any way either to integrate the #DeltaChat desktop client with KeePass, nor to add a master password.
Am I missing something, or it is just not there?

#DeltaChat is so much better than Signal when it comes to hardware support. Get this: when setting up a new phone I lose access to previous conversations and media DESPITE having a synced desktop app. Why?

#openpgp traditions and #signal both bind a cleartext identifier, phone number or email address, to a cryptographic key. It opens up attack vectors as the servers/orgs controlling this binding can interfere.

#deltachat avoids such cleartext identity bindings by creating random #chatmail addresses, as transport only. The cryptographic key becomes the identifier and we want it hidden from the transport layer. Only people being in end-to-end encrypted chat need to identify each other, after all.

yes, our whole project is about proving in reality (meaning: working code) that email protocols can be streamlined for instant messaging. #chatmail relays provide low latency always end to end encrypted interoperable messaging. The family of #deltachat apps work with the permission free chatmail relay server network but also with run-of-the-mill email servers. Just make sure to use a dedicated chat address and don't mix classic and chat email on the same address.

Dieses Beispiel zeigt sehr deutlich, dass die Möglichkeit, mehrere Accounts in einem Messenger einzurichten, auch ein Sicherheitsmerkmal ist. #deltachat erlaubt eine unbegrenzte Anzahl an Profilen (Accounts) pro Gerät. Jedes Profil verfügt über eine völlig unabhängige Kontaktliste. Die hätten zum Beispiel ein Profil für Pressekontakte und eines für Regierungsmitglieder verwenden können. So wäre es wohl nicht zu dieser peinlichen Panne gekommen.

We are testing #deltachat with 8 users since Friday with a self hosted server.

The experience is excellent and people are happy, especially with secondary device setup.

So far we ran into a few small issues.

- one user had pushes on one device delayed (its push. Remember apples guarantees on delivery…)
- a gif didn’t post but only the first frame (iOS)
- taking a photo doesn’t add it to the message, using the gallery works (Android)

Was ich schade finde, @delta, dass es nicht möglich ist, bei "Neuer Kontakt" die E-Mail-Adresse eine*r anderen DeltaChat-User*in direkt einzugeben.

ZB eben, wenn eine Person sich eine automatisiert verschlüsselte E-Mail-Adresse über nine.testrun.org eingerichtet hat und mir diese (über einen anderen Kanal) mitteilen möchte.

(Zählt ihr bei den Subdomains eigentlich hoch? Also von one.testrun.org, two, three ... twenty ..., usw.?)

Klar könnte sie mir auch den generierten Link über einen anderen Kanal schicken, aber die Mail-Adresse fände ich einfacher zu versenden.

Gerade mal getestet:
Ich kann von meiner regulären E-Mail-Adresse (TLS-verschlüsselt) an meine DeltaChat-Mail-Adresse schreiben.

DeltaChat zeigt die Mail als "Chatmail" an, kein Problem.

Aber DeltaChat verweigert die ausgehende Mail, weil sie an den Empfänger nicht PGP-verschlüsselt werden kann.

So stellt DeltaChat sicher, dass die (ausgehende) Kommunikation darüber tatsächlich nur E2E-verschlüsselt möglich ist.

Das muss halt beachtet werden, wenn eins die eigene E-Mail-Adresse für die Nutzung mit DeltaChat verwenden möchte.

Ansosnten bietet DeltaChat ja aber nach der Installation die Möglichkeit, sich eine automatisiert generierte, verschlüsstelte System-Mail-Adresse einzurichten.

Und schon kann verschlüsselt kommuniziert werden :)

we hear you. Changing messengers is serious work. There is no need to rush if you just moved to signal. It's a fine choice. For the time being, it would be suicidal for the US corporate operators of signal's infrastructure to use their power to compromise it. They could loose tens of billions of revenue with customers outside the US if they did. Maybe just consider #deltachat your insurance and a thing to eye mid/long term. Email will not go away anytime soon :)

Du weißt das, ich weiß das, alle #DeltaChat Nutzenden wissen das … mein Zitat war die übliche Antwort darauf, wenn man jemandem diese App vorschlägt.

Es ist immer das Problem einer kritischen Masse. Und Influencer:innen können an der Promo für DeltaChat nichts verdienen, also lässt sich diese App / dieses System nicht zu einer kritischen Masse pushen.

Zum Glück ist DeltaChat für alle Platformen verfügbar und nicht wie #Briar nur einer kleinen Gruppe zugänglich.

Seit einiger Zeit gibt es Chatmail-Server. Diese EMail-Server sind speziell für #DeltaChat konfiguriert. Sie sind schnell und nehmen nur verschlüsselte Chatnachrichten an. Das Problem ist also erkannt und gelöst.
Aber auch bei normalen EMail-Servern merke ich im Alltag keine Verzögerung. Es muss nur klar sein, dass der Versand von sehr vielen Nachrichten unter Umständen durch Ratelimits verzögert wird. Das könnte in Gruppen mit hunderten Mitgliedern der Fall sein.

Dear fans of messenger comparison sports,

How does it factor in that on #deltachat there are many apps that can be used in a chat without requiring a login or even a privacy policy ... And the apps all work like cryptpad but automatically and without requiring any server side hosting?

Editing documents and checklists and calendars are all safely end-to-end encrypted without a server and anyone can write new #webxdc apps permission free.

Die Einrichtung von #deltachat ist anonym, kostenlos und sehr einfach: App installieren, Namen eingeben und fertig! Neue Kontakte lassen sich per QR-Code, Link oder vCard hinzufügen. Ein weiterer Vorteil ist die Möglichkeit ein Profil auf einer unbegrenzten Anzahl an Geräten zu nutzen und eine unbegrenzte Zahl an Profilen auf einem Gerät. Außerdem können in den Chats Apps ausgeführt werden, um zum Beispiel einen gemeinsamen Kalender oder Einkaufliste zu führen oder Schach zu spielen.

Natürlich sind beide WA überlegen. Aber man sollte nicht vergessen, dass es sich um zentralisierte geschlossene Systeme handelt. Wer sagt, dass sich diese nicht eines Tages negativ entwickeln? Man wechselt von einem "walled garden" in einen anderen. Die Abhängigkeit von einem Anbieter bleibt bestehen. IMHO sind deshalb dezentrale Lösungen die bessere Alternative, auch im Hinblick auf Blocking und Zensur. Ich verwende #deltachat und kann jedem nur ans Herz legen, es mal zu testen.

Thanks for the reply! I created a profile on android in the default #chatmail and I used a new account in my email server (custom domain with infomaniak) for a second profile in mz Linux Desktop to check out how this works. I see #deltachat created a new imap folder in my email server and started adding emails there (as expected).

all issues from the ETH Zuerich security analysis were addressed.

There are more audits with the last one being on the Rust #OpenPGP library rPGP where also all issues were addressed.

Maybe even more importantly, #deltachat is focused on actual security outcomes for journalists, lawyers and activists in repressive countries. @Xeniax has done extensive user research and real-world testing. Many findings have been incorporated and addressed in Delta Chat.

Rather to my surprise I seem to have managed to set up my own chatserver, following (both) your instructions. I do have a follow-up question though. How security-hardened would you say the standard configuration is? Do you have any advice on firewalling etc?

There is no shortage of startups and enterprises animated by, or outright proclaiming, replacing e-mail as the de-facto open internet messaging standard. VC Investors are forever fascinated by funding such endeavours. #matrix #simplex #slack etc are examples.

#deltachat endorses e-mail but reconfigures and repurposes it to serve for interoperable instant messaging. The #chatmail server network relays end to end encrypted e-mail only, and servers are reduced to dumb store-and-forward relays.
