On February 25, #US secretary of state #MarcoRubio announced restrictions on visas for both government officials in Cuba and any others worldwide who are “complicit” with the island nation’s overseas #medical-assistance programs. A #USStateDepartment statement clarified that the sanction extends to “current and former” officials and the “immediate family of such persons.”

The primary intent behind these actions was to attract global media attention and portray Bangladesh and the July uprising in a negative light. The Indian media has consistently engaged in such false propaganda. The manner in which Chinmoy Krishna’s supporters brutally killed a lawyer in the Chattogram court today is unprecedented. Chinmoy Krishna had been working with a plan to disrupt harmony in the country and has cultivated a group of communal terrorist supporters with this agenda. The fascist Awami League has always sought to exploit the minority communities for communal politics. Now, Indian media is also attempting to escalate communal tensions with false propaganda. The minority Hindu community is part of Bangladesh’s citizenry, and we will ensure their safety. However, the Bangladesh government will, through due legal process, ensure the highest level of justice for the subversive Hindutva terrorists. I urge everyone to remain patient and stay calm. The terrorists will be arrested soon.

In 2013, #ChineseMining company #Chinalco (中国铝业集团有限公司) sparked an international conversation about extractive impacts with the news it had successfully relocated an entire #Peruvian town of 5,000 residents to clear space for a #CopperMine. At the time, the #relocation project in #Morococha, central #Peru, was touted as a solution to protect villagers from #pollution and #environmental degradation as a result of #mining practices, and as a potential template for #Chinese overseas #investment in #LatinAmerica.

Ten years later, experts describe the move as a “tragedy.”

Joselyn Jaua, a Peruvian #journalist who covers the #environment and communities in the region, explained to #GlobalVoices that Chinalco’s policies have deeply impacted both Old Morococha and New Morococha: “The rise of poverty is notorious for relocated and non-relocated people alike.”
