From constant scandals to its best shows ending – how 2024 turned into the BBC’s annus horribilis

There is no mention of the BBCs well recognised penchant for representing the establishment and kicking interlopers. Outside of Scotland, few in the UK recognised the bias against Independence (and a bias against parties that still support it), but a lot more have observed their very partial reporting on Gaza and Brexit.

Elected Democrats like Pelosi refused to fight. They made no effort to exploit his scandals. They made no effort to dominate news cycles. They didn't bother to try to set the narrative or frame the debate. The last 20 years have been a boxing match where the Dems didn't even throw a punch.

This is a programme which once infamously broadcast an episode from the predominantly working-class and independence-supporting Scottish city of Dundee – yet managed to have an audience consisting mainly of middle-class Conservative supporters with posh English accents. Another episode devoted to a discussion of Brexit had an audience composed entirely of Leave voters. Last night's episode was no exception to the show's penchant for platforming racism. A woman who looked as though she could have been a close friend of Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances expressed her view that only Reform UK could control immigration – adding that she "didn't believe" in any asylum and that she felt "very sorry for the little towns, little villages that these people have been put where people have lived all their lives”. Because the mild inconvenience to a racist of seeing brown-skinned people on the streets of their town and – shock horror – hearing them “speak foreign” is orders of magnitude worse than having to flee your country because of war, or because an authoritarian regime might imprison, torture, or even kill you due to your political beliefs, your ethnicity, or your sexuality.
