Half of the world's 2,000 biggest listed companies have set a target to get to net-zero emissions by the middle of the century, but just a fraction meet tough United Nations guidelines for what constitutes a quality pledge, a report has shown. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2023/11/06/companies/un-climate-goals-companies/?utm_content=bufferb5d4a&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #business #companies #climatechange #emissions #environment

Maybe it is time we shifted our focus from fossil fuel companies to the reality that our political leadership (globally) has let fossil fuel companies drive the the short term decisi(ns we get - rather than the those needed for a healthy environment in which our world and all its inhabitants can flourish?

If our politicians had the strength of character to resist the temptations (including but not limited to $) offered by the #FF sector, and make decisions based on the abundance of evidence available to them, the fossil fuel sector would be nothing like the problem they are today.

I wish I didn't have to tell you about this again, but I do. It's not being reported much in the news — and you know why?

Because it's not 'new' (the origin of the word 'news'), it's old. This has been going on for months now, and corporate news outlets are simply tired of reporting it. But it is still happening.

Canada's boreal forests are burning up.

At least 1100 fires are active, more than 700 out of control. Over 13 million hectares have been burned so far, with no end in sight. It's an unprecedented climate and environmental disaster.

'Prof Carolyn Roberts, an environmental and water consultant represented by the law firm Leigh Day, is bringing the claims at the competition tribunal on behalf of more than 20 million householders who are customers of the water firms. The claims say customers have been overcharged because the companies abused their monopoly positions. They failed to fully report the scale of raw sewage discharges into rivers and seas, and in doing so avoided penalties which would have had an impact on the price they could charge customers, the claim alleges. As a result, Roberts says, customers have been overcharged to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds.' https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/aug/09/public-could-receive-hundreds-of-millions-as-water-firms-face-sewage-lawsuit #water #environment #pollution #competition
