This week my department at the VA, many of whose employees work remotely, will be meeting in person, as we do several times per year.
I won't be there, because they refuse to take any #COVID precautions. I got COVID for the first time earlier this year from the last in-person group meeting, and I'm not going to risk that again.
I angsted over whether this will hurt my career. My boss insists it won't. I'm not sure I believe him, but I believe him enough to stay home.

More proof of #covid and #longcovid damaging the heart. We know COVID causes serious heart conditions, heart attacks, etc., we have so many studies and stats, why this isnt important to the majority of people, why this us not leading to infection control measures like masking, is something I will never understand. But I'll be continuing to #maskup as I know #covidisnotover and #longcovid is a dice roll away, increasing chances each infection.

Yet vaccination and antiviral uptake, plagued by inequitable access, have remained low, and other precautions like mask-wearing are being met with increasing resistance. “A lot of people right now are getting Covid all over the country,” said Dr Peter Chin-Hong, professor of medicine and infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. “There are still hospitalizations, and there’s still a few hundred deaths every week in the US – and that’s a tragedy.”

As the Academic Year Begins, Governor Hochul Makes COVID-19 Tests and Masks Available to Schools to Keep New York Students Safe As students return to school this week, Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that New York State is making COVID-19 rapid test kits and masks available to school districts and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services by request. This comes amid reports of the new BA.2.86 variant and following a rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations this summer. Governor Hochul is also advising schools to follow CDC guidance to help protect students in the classroom. “Thanks to the hard work of New York schools, teachers, and parents, we have come a long way to ensure students can safely return to the classroom,” Governor Hochul said. “Frequent testing for COVID-19 is an important part of keeping our kids safe and preventing an outbreak, and I will continue working to ensure our school districts have the resources they need to provide a safe, in-person learning environment for our students.” This week, the State will conduct outreach to the State Education Department and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) to survey needs for test kits and masks. After the requests have been submitted, New York State will deliver the requested tests and N-95 and KN-95 masks to each BOCES for distribution to school districts.
