She did her job to promote unity on the installation but I would have advised her to word it differently if she wanted to keep the job. Being fired for this was 100% predictable and I'm sure she understood that and did it anyway. It's a bad time to be a commander. #military #DOD #Greenland https://www.military.com/daily-news/2025/04/10/space-force-commander-greenland-sent-out-email-breaking-vance-after-his-visit.html

Update. The American Physical Society (#APS, @apsphysics) is running a survey on the impact of cuts to US science #funding. Please take it if you're affected or likely to be affected.
https://apsphysics.fillout.com/t/6ESUva3vwGus

"This survey collects stories showcasing the transformative positive impact of #NSF, #NIST, #DOE, #NASA, and #DOD-funded research and programs as well as what would be lost if support for basic research evaporates. You can document your experiences and share how recent executive actions have impacted you. Individual stories will be only be used publicly with permission or when fully anonymized."

"US agencies responsible for preventing the global proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and building security capacity around the world are facing deep cuts, perhaps total abolition, as the Trump administration continues its assault on any and all spending going overseas.

According to a draft working paper provided to WIRED, the Department of Defense is asking all its agencies and services that conduct “security cooperation” programs to consider the impact if the Pentagon were to “realign” its funding. The authors of the paper warn the cuts could hobble the fight against organized crime in South America, impair the battle against the Islamic State, increase the likelihood of a rogue state producing and using chemical weapons, and defund pandemic surveillance measures.

The working paper is in response to a request for information from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, asking agencies to assess the consequences of four levels of staff reduction—25 percent, 50 percent, and 75 percent cuts, or outright abolition."

Update. I still don't know the full story behind the takedown of the #NelsonMemo. But here's a clue. The Dept of Defense (#DOD) continued rolling its memo-based #OpenAccess policy *after* Trump took office and *after* the memo was taken down.
https://fediscience.org/@petersuber/113964410103345053

That's a sign that agencies have not been told to stop rolling out their memo-based policy upgrades. But of course that may change.

Also note that memo is preserved in the #NationalArchives, for now, not just in the Wayback Machine.

(Yes, I'm aware that Trump fired Colleen Shogan, the Biden-era National Archivist.)

Update. The Dept of Defense (#DOD) just released the implementation plan for its upgraded #OpenAccess policy under the Biden-era #OSTP #NelsonMemo.

This is the first fed agency action of its kind since #Trump took office. Note that, so far, this work has not stopped or changed.

DOGE Is Targeting the Wrong Agencies

The Dept of Defense has a bloated budget, is ripe with #corruption, & has never passed an audit. Hundreds of billions should be slashed.

"The #DeptOfDefense, which commands an $850 billion budget, failed its 7th audit in a row in November. In fact, it’s the only major federal agency that has never passed one...

#Doge ...[should] have spent the last month at the #Pentagon, not #USAID."

"As such, Musk—who has top-secret security clearance at SpaceX—is supposed to be subject to continuous vetting by the government. That requires him to report certain details of his private life and travel abroad, enabling the government to gauge whether he’s fit to have access to that classified info.

Yet Musk has failed to meet these reporting requirements since at least 2021, the Times reported, noting that Musk and his team haven’t provided the government with “some details of his travel” and “some of his meetings with foreign leaders.” The paper reported that SpaceX employees who are supposed to ensure adherence to these rules have complained to the IG about Musk’s and SpaceX’s lax compliance.

Meanwhile, back in October, The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk has had numerous conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This included ones in which Putin asked Musk to use his technology to do Russia geopolitical favors, such requesting that Musk “avoid activating his Starlink satellite internet service over Taiwan as a favor to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.”

Let's also add this about #Hegseth's extremist religious bent. The #military has chaplains, which are almost exclusively christians and are often Bible-thumping Jesus pushers who have barely a fig leaf of nondenominational disguise. They push out Bibles and use counseling sessions with Service members as a way to jam their religion down suffering people's throats. Yes I know, some of these chaplains aren't bad chaps. But many are fucking insufferable zealots and I know this from experience, and their leaders allow it. With a religious nutcase at the helm, the military's unconstitutional history of subjecting every Service member and civilian employee to a constant barrage of christian religious proselytizing will get immediately worse. Christianity will be built into Service school curricula in various unconstitutional ways, mark my words. This is inextricably tied to the damage he wants to do to diversity in the military because these views place white men at the top of a hierarchy in all things. The religion and the politics are inseparable. #extremism #military #DOD

Yesterday #Hegseth testified over and over again under oath that military training standards have changed to allow women to pass tests. I don't understand why none of the Dems had the sense to dispute that simple claim for which every military school has the historical data to show if or when its standards have ever been changed through modern history, and the reasons for those changes.

His claims are EASY to dispute. The women who made history by being first through Ranger school for example, this was discussed in the media REPEATEDLY with school officials stating flatly that the women had to pass the existing standards.

The USMC was most resistant to allowing women in certain combat roles until SECDEF Carter made it #DOD policy in 2016 that all combat jobs would be open to women who qualify. The Marines and SF were clear that any women who applied would have to train to the existing standard. And they have, and many have met the standard.

Hegseth's false argument could be completely wrecked by existing historical data and nobody did it. The often touted "bigger and stronger" argument fails consistently because the women who have passed these schools, as well as MANY of the men, are not giants. They are simply very disciplined and they train hard.

"In the context of unprecedented U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) budgets, this paper examines the recent history of DoD funding for academic research in algorithmically based warfighting. We draw from a corpus of DoD grant solicitations from 2007 to 2023, focusing on those addressed to researchers in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Considering the implications of DoD funding for academic research, the paper proceeds through three analytic sections. In the first, we offer a critical examination of the distinction between basic and applied research, showing how funding calls framed as basic research nonetheless enlist researchers in a war fighting agenda. In the second, we offer a diachronic analysis of the corpus, showing how a 'one small problem' caveat, in which affirmation of progress in military technologies is qualified by acknowledgement of outstanding problems, becomes justification for additional investments in research. We close with an analysis of DoD aspirations based on a subset of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) grant solicitations for the use of AI in battlefield applications. Taken together, we argue that grant solicitations work as a vehicle for the mutual enlistment of DoD funding agencies and the academic AI research community in setting research agendas. The trope of basic research in this context offers shelter from significant moral questions that military applications of one's research would raise, by obscuring the connections that implicate researchers in U.S. militarism."

Pete Hegseth's pastor: Wilson believes men have a sexual right to women, and has written that unsubmissive women are at fault for sexual violence committed against them. “The sexual act cannot be made into an egalitarian pleasuring party … a man penetrates, conquers, colonizes, plants. A woman receives, surrenders, accepts.” Wilson also believes that God created women “to make the sandwiches” and thinks that giving women the right to vote led to “a long, sustained war on the family.” #military #DOD #natsec #ChristianExtremism https://newrepublic.com/post/188960/pete-hegseth-gets-regressive-ideas-women

#Trump is considering FL Gov DeSantis as a possible replacement for Hegseth -as DOD Sec amid R senators’ concerns over mounting allegations re: fmr Fox News host’s personal life.

Picking DeSantis, a 2024 GOP primary rival for the pres., would amount to a stunning turn for Trump. RD: well-known conservative with a service record -shares Trump/Hegseth’s—view on culling what they see as “woke” policies in the MIL.

Ron is a fascist. He may be as bad as Hegsweth.
