Farage prevented from grandstanding at farming protests.

Well who can blame them? Many probably still feel a little sorry for themselves after a large number of farmers bought the lies and enthusiastically supported #Brexit.

While farmers are angry at the Govt. for changing inheritance tax arrangements for farm land (whose impact is the subject to, shall we say, some disagreement).... farmers should really be angry at:

those who convinced them Brexit was a good idea;

Non-farming investors driving up land prices to store value (hello Mr Dyson);

and the supermarket oligopoly driving farm gate prices down.

Once again they're being used as sock puppets by those with a different agenda....

I don't always agree with Will Hutton, but on inheritance tax and farming, I think he's on the right track - we need to remake farming & IHT is one mechanism for starting to do that - farming needs to move beyond a semi-feudal hoarding of land & look to different modes of agricultural organisation.

He is right about the direction in which farming policy needs to move; its just contemporary farmers often find it difficult to see that....

"The damage we see from this destruction is much more than destroying buildings. You can rebuild a house, but as a farmer, when you lose your yields over many seasons, you lose everything,” says George Mitri, director of the Land and Natural Resources programme at Lebanon’s University of Balamand"

New York farmers trying to cope with the warmest October in human history, which has led to forest/brush fires in the Catskills and New Jersey, and turned the soil into superdry dust, making it impossible to plant cover crops or otherwise prepare fields for spring planting.

"As Earth’s temperature rises, agricultural practices will need to adapt. Droughts will likely become more frequent, and some land may no longer be arable."

"On top of that is the challenge of feeding an ever-growing population without expanding the production of fertilizer and other agrochemicals, which have a large carbon footprint that is contributing to the overall warming of the planet.

"Researchers across MIT are taking on these agricultural challenges from a variety of angles."

"Scientists have been concerned that H5N1 might spread to pigs, which are considered “mixing bowl” species for flu viruses because they carry the same kind of receptors on cells in their lungs as humans and birds."

H5N1 bird flu has been identified in a pig in the United States for the first time, the US Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.

While hedgehogs were once common across Europe, and were until now listed as of “least concern” on the red list, they are being pushed towards extinction by urban development, intensive #farming and #roads, which have fragmented their #habitat. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/oct/28/hedgehogs-near-threatened-red-list-decline-over-past-decade #environment #ecology #gardens #wildlife #nature
