I think #ABC australia is doing a great job of exposing them.

ICYMI: As Rajiv Prabhakar (OpenU) points out, its not just the gender pay gap that is a problem, its the long-term impact of that gap on pension provision for women. As he points out, this means the cost(s) to individual women of unpaid care continue into later life.

For those who have retired already, there is little (other than benefits) that can be done, for women still in work, any reduction in the gap will have some positive impact on pensions!

Considering The rise of #MAGA and the idiocy of "men" since November 5, I heartily endorse #4B and hope that all #women stand firm.

What’s 4B? A South Korean feminist movement reaches the U.S. https://www.npr.org/2024/11/08/nx-s1-5182888/4b-movement-trump-south-korea

Meanwhile in America, sales of Aristophanes Lysistrata accelerate....

Q. when we look at declining birthrates how much influence has male choice played in this shift?

Often the Q. is focussed on women, but as we know men are also involved in parenthood (in the majority of cases), so what weight should we accord to their contribution to declining brith rates across the world?

Perhaps more than we have in the past?

A team of researchers tracked 30 women who menstruate over their cycles, documenting in detail the structural changes that take place in the brain as hormonal profiles fluctuate. What’s more, the changes may extend beyond regions associated with the menstrual cycle. @ScienceAlert reports: https://flip.it/sh265K

#WomensEpics 2/2

The tale of the Nisan shamaness (Manchu)
Ocy-Bala (Altai)
Hi'iakaikapoliopele (Hawaii)
Queen Bertha (France)
Manasa (Bengal)
Chandravati's Ramayana (Bengal)
Umesiben Mama (Manchu)
Repunnot-un-Kur (Ainu)
Nne Mgbaafo (Igbo)
Ashima (Yi)
Juliana (Anglo-Saxon)
Sirin Mama (Sibe)

Note: this list doesn't include the stories I could not find a translation for (see earlier toots for that list)

Today's #MythologyMonday theme is Sisters.

As it happens I just finished reading the Bengali epic of Manasa, the Snake Goddess. She is an accidental daughter of Shiva. She spends the entire epic trying to gain recognition among the gods, and then among mortals.

She is supported all the way by her sister Neta, who is the perfect balance of intelligence and calculation to Manasa's flares of fury and power. They made a great duo 🐍

#WomensEpics that need an English translation ASAP, round two:

- Catakantaravanan: a Tamil epic that elaborates on the Ramayana, but in this story, it is Sita who fights a demon king

- Matabagka Seeks the Deity of the Wind: epic from the Philippines about a girl's heroic journey (this one has an English translation, but only in a thesis manuscript in the UP library)

#WomensEpics #epics #folklore #women #WomensHistory

So by the way, the epic of Princess Fatima was an amazing read. But sadly the longest English translation to date only includes 11 episodes out of 455. And even those in an abridged version.

Who do we talk to about getting a fuller translation?...

Once again, on my social media feed:

"Elizabeth Báthory is one of the most prolific serial killers in history!"

No 👏 She 👏 Is 👏 Not 👏

It was a political trial. She was a widow with vast lands and lots of money. There is an entire book written by a legal historian about her trial and how it was constructed to grab her wealth.

She was definitely not a vampire, but she was also not a celebrity murderess.

Alright, since many of you asked so excitedly :)

#WomensEpics I have read so far:

Shirin Mama (Sibe people) - warrior girl defeats bandits and rescues orphaned children, becoming a goddess

Chandravati's Ramayana (Bengal) - 16th century retelling from Sita's perspective

Ochi-Bala (Altai people) - warrior maiden fights an evil sorcerer to protect her people

I'm currently reading The Tale of Princess Fatima - an Arabic epic about a warrior woman

#epics #folklore #women #storytelling

I am reading the Altaic epic about the warrior maiden Ocy-Bala. She is described as "tall from birth", with broad shoulders and a wide back.

Hell yeah, buff lady :D

9. Famous women

The search for Omm Sety (Jonathan Cott)

The fascinating biography of a woman who was declared dead at age 3, and came back to life remembering her previous life in Ancient Egypt. She dedicated her entire life to studying Egypt, moved there, helped archaeologists, and remembered a lot of things that later were discovered to be true...

The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II - by Svetlana Alexievich

Alexievich is a Nobel Laureate mostly known for "Voices from Chernobyl", but her other books are great too. In this one she interviewed hundreds of women who fought in WWII in the Soviet army, or as partisans.
This one a difficult read, with a lot of dark stories. But it is very much worth reading.

I am barely ready for this year's A to Z Blogging, but I am already super excited for next year's theme 😅

I just decided that I'll do another reading challenge - reading 26 epics about women.

And yes, I already have a list. 26 traditional epics with female protagonists from around the world.

Hopefully a year will be enough to read all of them 😄

A warrior of the people: How Susan La Flesche Overcame Racial and Gender Inequality to Become America's First Indian Doctor - by Joe Starita

In 1889, Susan La Flesche became the first Native American doctor to earn a western medical degree. She spent the rest of her life working for her community and standing up for equality. The book tells her life story, that of her family, and that of American women in medicine.

Topic 1: Cartoons and Animation

Book:
Queens of Animation: The untold story of the women who transformed the world of Disney and made cinematic history, by Nathalia Holt

This one was a fascinating read about the first woman animators and story artists hired by Walt Disney, and their lasting effect on the most famous Disney movies.
Most of it was new to me, and I loved the details about their lives and personalities.

"The South Korean capital of #Seoul looks glitzy and dynamic but the country remains deeply #conservative."

"This can mean that #abuse against #women in certain parts of society is not taken as seriously as it should be..."

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57493020

How can 'conservative' be used to refer to contempt of rule of law? What is being 'conserved' other than unpredictability?

The sooner we abandon this #newspeak, the sooner we can have rule of law.
