The idea that planets were born from giant clouds in space is called the "nebular hypothesis."

It originated with Swedish philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg, way back in 1734. But only now can astronomers directly observe that, yes, planets really do form in clouds around newborn stars. Science takes time.

The Formation of the Solar System According to Swedenborg.
Swedenborg’s On the Principles of Natural Things consists of three volumes: the first is entitled Natural Principles, the second On Iron and the third On Copper and Orichalcum. In all of them the text is accompanied by elaborate diagrams.
Plate 26, which appears in the third part of Volume 1, is headed “De Chao Universali Solis et Planetarum” and explains the formation of the solar system. In Fig. 1 the crust formed by the original nebula as it solidified is about to burst. Fig. 2 shows the state of confusion and collapse as pieces of the sun are scattered through space. In Fig. 3 the crust has reformed as a disc surrounding the proto-sun. In Fig. 4 the pieces have separated into individual spheres: the planets.

We can now DIRECTLY OBSERVE planets being born!

Each of the arrow-marked blobs is a likely planet-in-the-making around the infant star FU Orionis (great name), located 1,350 light years away in the constellation Orion.

First evidence of gravitational instability clumps with planetary masses. On the left, the ALMA band 6 continuum image of the protoplanetary disk around the FUor star V960 Mon, and on the right the SPHERE/IRDIS polarized light image. Contours of the ALMA continuum are overlaid on both images, corresponding to levels of 3, 4, and 5 times σ. The ALMA signal showing the clumps share the same location of the spiral arms around the star. Image from Weber et al. (2023).

"Duke University has decided to close its herbarium, a collection of 825,000 specimens of plants, fungi and algae that was established more than a century ago. The collection, one of the largest and most diverse in the country, has helped scientists map the diversity of plant life and chronicle the impact of humans on the environment.

The university’s decision has left researchers reeling."

I wrote about neuralink in 2012 helping a paralyzed woman.

Oh, what, it was some other scientists who have been working on brain-computer interfaces for a long, long time? Yes it was.

Veteran science reporters would know the context and include it...but today's news biz isn't interested in all that.

Why is Ubuntu used so much in the scientific field?

Spoiler: Cause I have to say... there's zero reasons to use windows on science, industry, technology, production, military... or any other field that takes it serious.

A moment of reality.

In the world ranking of lies-2023, dear friends, only the third place is occupied by the perennial champion "I was told by girls at work".

The recent leader, "According to the message of Telegram channels," has moved down to second place.

The first place seems to have been taken by "A new study has shown" for a long time.

I've been seeing news reports of the type "an honored truth and fact-checking expert got caught with a fake biography / an investigative journalist falsified his stories for years" and, finally, "a prominent scientist falsified data".

To understand the magnitude of this last phenomenon - let's turn to a recent scandal: Professor Eric Stewart, 51, vice president of the American Association of Criminology, guru and unquestioned authority, was recently fired from the University of Florida.

This titan of African-American thought is one of the actual authors of the concept of "systemic racism," in which it has been proven (based on research) that whites treat blacks and Hispanics with permanent prejudice, perceive them by definition as criminals, and wish them harsher punishments.

Stewart's research (and his epigones) actually spawned an entire reality, which in turn spawned BLM and the famous American pogroms of 2020.

Anyway: Stewart was fired this summer because it turned out that he had been making things up for decades. A number of his seminal scientific publications about systemic white racism - completely retracted.

The funny thing is, in 20 years, Stewart's publications have only been directly cited more than 8,500 times in other scientific papers - not counting the citations of those who cited him (and there, you have to think, the count goes into the tens of thousands).

A whole huge piece of conventional wisdom (which was supposed to be believed by all decent people and on which thousands of grants and millions of dollars of money were earned) turned out to be made of humus and sticks.

It is clear why the cunning Afro-scientist was referred to: he was in trend, he was relevant, he corresponded to the asserted ideology.

...And now let's just assume that something similar is going on in other universally recognized Obviousnesses, Proven by Research.

Although no, of course not. It can't be that the authorities are lying, and even amicably. After all, everyone knows that Greenland will be ice-free by 2016, masks are effective against covis, and Russia has three or four months left before collapse in the summer of 2022.

In 1916, 23 yr old chemist Alice Ball discovered a breakthrough in treatment for Leprosy (Hansen’s Disease). She was the 1st woman & 1st Black chemistry professor at UHawaii.

Tragically, Ball passed away months after her discovery due to complications from a lab accident.

What happened next? Arthur Dean, head of her dept, continued the work publishing Ball’s process as “Dean’s method.”

Fortunately, a colleague spoke up & the name was changed to “Ball’s method.” #HistoryRemix #science #history

So what happens after #MinCup23 ends?... What's gonna fill the "fun Mastodon voting campaign in a scientific field" shaped hole in my heart?

Is there like a Moth Cup? Or a Nudibranch Cup?...
