Today's #MinCup23 match is corundum vs lawsonite.

*Cracks knuckles*

I'm voting corundum, because folklore (and because as a kid I had a book on gemstones, and padparadscha seemed so magical).

I'm going to make this a thread, because rubies and sapphires figure into a whole bunch of tales and legends.

Today's #MinCup23 match is stibnite vs sodalite.

Stibnite is also known as kohl, used as an eyeliner since Ancient Egypt.

There in an Egyptian folktale where a dervish puts magic kohl on the eyes of a young man, rendering him invisible so he can sneak into the king's palace to see a princess.

A wily old woman catches the trespasser by burning buffalo dung - the rancid smoke makes the guy tear up, and the tears wash the magic kohl from his eyes. Oops.

There is a "Greek myth" going around in esoteric circles about Dionysus and Amethyst, but it's actually a 17th century fakelore invention. Probably based on this belief.

Fun fact, the Hungarian version of D&D had gemstone-based magic, and lucky characters got to use amethyst to purify alcoholic drinks 😄

As for quartz, here is a Mansi legend about the origin of rock crystals in the Urals. It tells of a chief who built a tower of clear crystal, which a horde of giants shattered, trying to kidnap the chief's daughter. With the help of spirits, the attackers were turned into pillars of stone.

I blogged about the story here

*NEW POST*

My latest post discusses the remarkable Nanny Morgan, whose legacy has been marred by folklore. She was a fascinating woman who didn't deserve her fate, who suffered stereotyping in both life and death. She deserves to be remembered as a person rather than a witch. I've completely rewritten this article to reflect new research. I really hope you enjoy this lengthy but important post.

Cinnabar in Chinese folklore was associated with the Vermilion Bird of the South, and one of the main ingredients of immortality pills in Chinese alchemy (ironically, since it's toxic, and if you eat it you'll get the opposite of immortal...)

#folklore #cinnabar #MinCup23

There is an Oroqen folktale about a hero named Silteken, who goes out to avenge his father's death on a 100-eyed monster. He loses the first fight and dies.

However, his clever horse goes on a quest to kidnap a (willing) princess from her wedding along with her dowry of cinnabar, which can be used to bring the dead back to life.

Revived with cinnabar by his beloved, Silteken defeats the monster.

Today's #MinCup23 vote is between cinnabar and quartz. This is a tough one! Going on folklore, both have a whole lot to offer.

I'll make this a thread and share some stories.

A friend asked #ChatGPT for recommendations on folktales where weaving and spinning plays an important role.

The #AI recommended the Ugly Duckling.
When asked why, it said "the duckling makes magical clothes for the prince." 😂

This will probably change in the future, but right now, AI is very, very bad at folklore questions.

(Last time I asked it about mythical creatures in China, and it made up an entire nonexistent chapter of Journey to the West...)

I just read Jane Yolen in one of her books refer to carrying on traditional stories as "mouth-to-ear resuscitation"... 😄

The cover of my new book that's coming out in a few weeks 😊 Art by Viktória Hitka.

Seven-legged horses and kind witches: Magical folktales from Csík

It's a selection of folktales from Csíkszentdomokos, Transylvania, from a collection done in the 1940s. It was an awesome set of tales to work with.

She is riding a pale blue, seven-legged horse who has a mane reminiscent of a cloud, and the crescent moon on its neck. The background is green, depicting a forest of pine trees.

#FolkloreMoment : Once, a woman said that she would like to marry - but she did not want to bear any children, as she was terribly afraid of the pains of birth.

The couple went to their local priest, who said that he was unable to help them. So he sent them to the pope.

The pope said that he could help her, if she followed his instructions exactly. Then the pope told her that he could help her - if she agreed to follow his instructions exactly.

The woman agreed, and then the pope arranged for her to spend the night in a room with a snake.

The next morning, the woman was dead - but her wish was fulfilled, for now she would never give birth.

So there's a #Kickstarter project for a tarot deck based on The Classic of Mountains and Seas, which is an ancient Chinese text of mythical lands and creatures. The artwork is pretty stunning, and I LOVE this concept.

So the poll closed, and "Folktales of emotions" and "Folktales of occupations" finished neck and neck. I am gravitating towards emotions now, but I'll see how difficult that makes the research...

Thank you all for voting! :)

This book really sounds awesome, and I would love it if the project got funded.

Hugh Lupton is a stellar storyteller, and he is generously sharing the best of his folktale repertoire.

For #FungiFriday, here is a picture of Fomes Fomentarius, commonly known as the Tinder Fungus or Hoof Fungus. It boasts a rich history as a fire starter, in textile crafting, and in medicinal use. Ötzi, the Iceman, carried this fungus with him 5,000 years ago. The Tinder Fungus surely held cultural significance; it's known to have been carried as a lucky charm. Unfortunately, I'm unaware of any specific #Folklore tied to it. Anyone in the know?

Here's a fun Hungarian folktale about the origin of #mushrooms:

When Jesus and St. Peter walked the earth Jesus sent Peter to a house to ask for some flat bread. Peter took an extra piece and hid it in his pocket. As they walked on he kept nibbling in secret, walking behind Jesus.
However, every time he took a bite, Jesus asked a question, and Peter had to spit out the bread to answer.
From the spat-out bites the first mushrooms sprouted along the road 🍄

So, by no power invested in me whatsoever, I declare this week's #FolkloreFriday theme to be mushrooms, in honor of #FungiFriday

Topic 12: The Rákóczi Revolution

My random topic was an important moment in Hungarian history, the Rákóczi revolution of 1703-1711.
I ended up reading a book by Magyar Zoltán (titled Rákóczi) that explored the mark the (unsuccessful) revolution left on Hungarian folklore and local legends. Despite it being relatively recent, it has seeped deep into Hungarian tradition, and gathered a lot of archaic, mythical tropes and motifs.

Old Thiess, a Livonian werewolf by Carlo Ginzburg and Bruce Lincoln

I actually tooted about this amazing werewolf trial story earlier so here is the link:

Do we have actual #FolkloreFriday on here (like, with themes and everything) or is it just the hashtag?...

#FolkTaleMail

Obviously. I would love a subscription where I regularly receive folklore in the mail. Especially unpublished, archival, freshly collected, newly translated, or little known local folklore from around the world.
