Even deeper in the lunar mythology rabbit hole:

There are ancient Greek sources that claim that the Fair Helen came from the Moon.
According to them, Moon people were fifteen times larger than us and laid eggs instead of giving birth. And since Helen came from an egg, she had to be a Moon woman.

Please readjust your Iliad retellings to include an 80-foot tall lunar Helen accordingly.

I am preparing for the next MythOff, and I am way down the rabbit hole about Greek and Roman sources that claim that the Nemean Lion was created by Hera and raised on the Moon. Basically, it was an artificial monster designed to defeat Heracles, transported from the Moon to Earth in a specific way.

Also now I am reading articles about Ancient Greek ideas about the Moon's flora and fauna.

I love mythology.

When I was putting together my "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" manuscript, I was constantly told that it is not a sellable concept for a book - because "people want to read their favorite myths", and not unkown ones.

Now the reviews are trickling in, and every reviewer highlights how exciting it is to find unknown myths about the well-known gods and heroes.

🤷‍♀️

(Still looking for an English language publisher, btw.)

It is an incredibly cool feeling to walk into your favorite café and ask for a latte named after your book 🥰 🥰
Pompeii Latte Art Caffe is running a promotion with a custom made Silent Goddess hazelnut-brownie latte ☕️

Today is looking up :D Shooting promo videos for social media for the mythology book. At the Pompeii Café in Budapest :)

I drank like 5 cups of latte during the shoot.

I can see the gods now.

Me (woman in her thirties, red hair, glasses) sitting in the corner of a café, drinking a cup of latte. The coffee table has a mosaic theme, and there is Horatius quote on the wall behind me. My book, The Silent Goddess: Forgotten Greek and Roman myths, is on the coffee table. The cover is blue, with art featuring a goddess surrounded by stars. I am wearing a white and blue Roman outfit and a blue hairband.

So, I showed up to my book launch at the literary festival today. Telling Greek and Roman myths, appropriately dressed because why not :)

Then I was told 3 minutes before stage time that... my #mythology book is not being sold at the festival.

Because... by Hungarian law, you can't sell #lgbtq content within 200 meters of a school.

So 8pm, at an adult literary event, I couldn't actually sign. Greek mythology. Because there is a school building nearby.

#KAOS is cancelled by Netflix after one season.

Honestly, I didn't like it, although it had some good storylines. But also, I know it was popular, so it's once again a promising show being cut for... whatever reason.

I am sick and tired of streaming sites being full of unfinished stories.

As a storyteller, I don't think this trend is good for our collective mental health.

This feeling never gets old 🥰 My new book is out in the world today! The Mute Goddess: Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths. And yes, it has that new book smell!

I am very excited, and very nervous. I put my heart and soul into researching these myths. Maybe because I am an archaeologist, but this one makes me more nervous about what people will think than any of my previous books 😬

Title (in Hungarian) reads The Mute Goddess: Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths.

By the way, said "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" book is looking for an English lanuage publisher ;)

It is coming out in Hungary on the 16th from Trend Kiadó.

It contains 25 little known stories from Greek and Roman mythology - including variants of myths not included in most popular collections. Sourced and researched, and re-told by a storyteller.

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know :)

Yass, publishing milestone:

My Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths book is advertised with the CW "Non-traditional content." 😂

(Context: According to a new Hungarian law, any book containing LGBT+ content has to be labeled as "non-traditional". Including the famously traditionally straight Ancient Greeks, apparently.)

I am remembering the time I got dogpiled on the birb site for asking why people insist on romanticizing Hades and Persephone.

If I did another thesis, I would write it on the internet popularity of this couple, and the underlying cultural and psychological reasons... 😄

It continues to baffle and fascinate me that this is the ship people chose as their favorite.

Aww I love this #MythologyMonday theme (esp. since I was just with *both* my #Sisters IRL last weekend!)

Shout out to the 7 Sisters known as the #Pleaides who live now as stars in the night sky b/c #Orion is the WORRRSST!

#JejuIsland has a tradition of eight snake gods, who are a mother and seven sisters from the seven stars (Chilseong) of the Big Dipper in the North, in charge of riches and prosperity. These are their domains:

Daughter 1: Harvest grandmother (= goddess)
Daughter 2: Administration and criminal law enforcement
Daughter 3: Keeper of prisons
Daughter 4: Orchard grandmother
Daughter 5: Keeper of storehouses
Daughter 6: Government office grandmother
Daughter 7: Outer chilseong of the fields
Mother: Inner chilseong of the house

(See thread for how they came to be gods, and mind the content warnings!)

Today's #MythologyMonday theme is Sisters.

As it happens I just finished reading the Bengali epic of Manasa, the Snake Goddess. She is an accidental daughter of Shiva. She spends the entire epic trying to gain recognition among the gods, and then among mortals.

She is supported all the way by her sister Neta, who is the perfect balance of intelligence and calculation to Manasa's flares of fury and power. They made a great duo 🐍

4.
Dionysos and Ampelos

I think this is the most beautiful (even if tragic) love story in Greek mythology. Nonnus tells it in detail. The young Satyr Ampelos is Dionysos' first love. When he dies in an accident, Dionysos gireves for him so deeply that he is allowed to turn into the fist vine instead of going to the Underworld. They stay together, and Ampelos makes Dionysos who he is - god of wine and life.

When Apollo takes revenge for the death of his son Asclepius, he is exiled to serve a mortal man for a year. He serves King Admetos, and falls in love with him. After his year of service he helps Admetos win his wife Alkestis - another great Greek love story.

My point is, this is probably the only story of unrequited love about Apollo where he unselfishly helps his beloved, instead of assault or revenge.

Eurybarus and the Lamia

This is a classic "dashing hero saves sacrificial virgin from dragon" type story, except gay.
When Delphi is threatened by a Lamia, the locals decide to sacrifice a young man named Alcyoneus to the monster. However, a hero named Eurybaros happens to pass by, sees the youth, and falls in love with him. He takes his place, kills the monster, saves the city. Happy end.

Kyknos is a vain and curel prince who likes to set impossible tasks for his lovers. Eventually everyone leaves him except for Phylius. He's a bit of a himbo, good-natured and naive. He fulfills all the impossible quests with the help of the deified Herakles.

Eventually Herakles sends him a message saying he deserves better, and Phylius leaves Kyknos for good.

Yay for getting out of toxic relationships :D

So in honor of #PrideMonth

I am reading an article about how every time ancient art depicts a goddess as sexually alluring, they always get labeled a "goddess of fertility". Even when there is no indication of children, pregnancy, or anything fertile.

The article argues that some goddesses were deities of sex and pleasure, without the maternal fertility aspect.

I am like 🤯 🤯 I have a whole entire archaeology degree and we never addressed this...
