When racist and hateful hooligans from any nationality engage in violence with local communities, it’s often reported as a brawl. However, when Israeli extremists, openly chanting genocidal slogans and inciting violence, clash with locals in Europe, these incidents are misrepresented as a “pogrom.”
This term dangerously misleads, framing unorganized aggression and self-defense resulting from frustration as though it were an unprovoked ethnic assault, rather than the result of direct provocations and incitements by nationalist extremists.
These Israeli extremists are not targeted because of their Jewish identity, but because of their violent, racist actions. They rip down Palestinian flags, harass Arab drivers, and chant about destroying Palestinian schools and communities. It is unreasonable and irresponsible to expect those subjected to such hate to passively accept it - especially when European officials refuse to apply their anti-hate speech laws against Israelis chanting death to Arabs.
Cities like Amsterdam must be governed by laws and norms that reject hate speech, discrimination, and incitement to violence, in contrast to the impunity these individuals may be accustomed to in Tel Aviv.

De afgelopen dagen zijn wij diep verontrust door het geweld en de racistische uitlatingen die onze stad verscheuren. Amsterdammers met een Arabisch uiterlijk en zij die solidair zijn met de Palestijnse zaak werden ernstig bedreigd en gecriminaliseerd. Wij zijn verrast door het gebrek aan bescherming van hen en de eenzijdige aanpak van burgemeester Halsema en de Amsterdamse Driehoek. Het lijkt alsof de Amsterdamse driehoek ingrijpt bij tegengeluid, terwijl we ook hebben gezien dat Israëlische supporters geweld aanjagen.
Amsterdam BIJ1 wijst deze selectieve rechtshandhaving resoluut af. Waar de burgemeester zich terecht uitspreekt voor de veiligheid van de joodse gemeenschap, die uiteraard niets van doen hebben met wandaden door Israëlische hooligans, laat zij dat achterwege bij Amsterdamse Palestijnen en zij die op hen lijken.
Het is al bijzonder dat de Maccabi-wedstrijd überhaupt doorgang heeft gevonden, ondanks de eerder in kaart gebrachte risico's. In steden als Brussel werden maatregelen genomen om escalatie te voorkomen, en in Athene ging het al eerder mis.
In Amsterdam kregen honderden Israëlische fans de ruimte zonder oog voor de mogelijke gevolgen voor de stad. Het resultaat is dat taxichauffeurs en andere kwetsbare groepen in Amsterdamse wijken gevaar hebben gelopen met zelfs mishandeling als gevolg, zonder de bescherming die zij verdienen.
Ook de persconferentie van Halsema riep vragen op. Omdat ze de Israëlische Maccabi-hooligans 1 op 1 gelijk stelde met Joodse Amsterdammers en slechts zionistisch perspectief toeliet en het geweld tegen Arabische Amsterdammers, de verontrustende verbranding van Palestijnse vlaggen en de door de Maccabi-fans gescandeerde racistische leuzen tegen Arabieren wegwuifde.
