Quoting Michael Wolff from #Haaretz interview about his new book “All or Nothing: How Trump Recaptured America”

Wolff accuses #Trump of #antisemitism "in the old sense," claiming Trump fundamentally views Jews as different from himself. He asserts that Trump has "absolutely no interest in Israel" and describes Israeli politics as "boring" to Trump, who is "categorically uninterested in anything related to foreign policy and the Middle East."

Trump's support for Israel is purely performative rather than based on genuine concern, stating "It's important for him to appear as a friend of Israel, but he doesn't care about Israel." He points to Trump's muted response to the October 7 attacks despite political opportunity, and suggests his resentment toward #Netanyahu (for congratulating Biden in 2020) influenced his reaction.

Wolff mentions that even Trump's Jewish son-in-law Jared Kushner refused to sign a statement defending Trump against antisemitism accusations, adding credibility to Wolff's claims about Trump's attitudes toward Jews and Israel.

[…] The Hamas attack on October 7 caught Donald Trump on his way to a massive campaign rally in Waterloo, Iowa. "This was the perfect stage to make a militant declaration in favor of Israel and stand behind its military plans," veteran journalist Michael Wolff wrote in his new and widely discussed book, "All or Nothing: How Trump Recaptured America." "The evangelical base in Iowa is overwhelmingly pro-Israel," he continues. "A Trumpian display of fire and fury toward the Palestinians would certainly have been received with sympathy." However, Trump, he wrote, delivered a pale, lukewarm statement of support, contrary to everything one might expect from a man who has never shied away from bombastic words. Especially when he had an opportunity to gain political capital.

#Haaretz / A case study in how democracy crumbles, self mutilates and surrenders to populism (in broad daylight)

Haaretz published yesterday an opinion piece by David Schocken, a potential heir to the liberal newspaper Haaretz, in which he argues that the (low circulation though profitable and influential) newspaper has become too insular, ideologically homogenous, and fearful of dissenting opinions. He implies that the paper should be more open to a wider range of viewpoints, including those from the right-wing.

Succession 👑 and sugar-coated facade of pluralism

Shuki Tausig, The Seventh Eye’s editor, strongly supports Haaretz’s stance. In order to protect democratic values, a "defensive democracy" approach dictates that certain views should not be given a platform. To David Schoken’s claim that the paper is alienating people on the right he simply states: why should the paper cater to the right? It's a left-leaning paper.

[…] An important article is published in the opinion pages of "Haaretz." Not because of its content, which is foolish and irresponsible, certainly not because of its pompous tone, and definitely not because of the embarrassing ignorance and cowardice it's bursting with, but because of the author's identity: David Schocken. He is one of two possible heirs to the position of publisher of Haaretz, alongside his cousin, Roni Schocken.

[…] David Schocken writes that "there are some people in the newspaper who are proud of excluding writers with 'dangerous' opinions that, in a 'defensive democracy,' shouldn't be legitimized." Just like countless cheap manipulators before him, David Schocken won't lie, he'll just put quotation marks around the truth.

[…] David, dangerous opinions aren't 'dangerous' opinions. They are dangerous opinions. A defensive democracy isn't a '"defensive democracy." It's a defensive democracy. If David Schocken thinks there are no dangerous opinions and that our democracy doesn't need defending, he should grow a pair and write it. Instead, he resorts to the villain's other escape route. Not patriotism - quote marks."

The rhinoceros 🦏 in the room

Aluf Benn, Haaretz’s current editor-in-chief chimed in arguing that Haaretz must remain committed to its core values, particularly human and civil rights, even in the face of political pressure and attempts to silence the paper. He emphasizes that the paper's role is to challenge the government and speak truth to power, even when that means going against popular opinion. He implicitly accuses Schocken of being naive and prioritizing the paper's financial interests over its journalistic integrity.

[…] On my desk at the Haaretz newsroom sits a small plastic rhinoceros. I put it there after the last elections, a reminder that the newspaper must never compromise its values and principles just to run with the herd. I knew from the very beginning that during the reign of this government of horrors, we would face pressures and temptations to abandon the newspaper's long-standing commitment to defending human and civil rights, to shut up and join some imaginary, cozy center. In moments like these, I thought, we'd need to look at the rhino as a warning sign.

[…] The rejection of these articles wasn't meant to protect "Haaretz" readers from "consuming poisonous opinions," as Schocken puts it. Readers are already bombarded with these views from every screen, news page, and tweet, and, of course, they're also reported on in Haaretz. The rejection was intended to draw a line in the sand, to mark the boundaries of acceptable opinions that the newspaper will provide a platform for. Just as we haven't published articles supporting the dismantling of the judiciary's independence and turning it into a puppet of the Likud party, even though that position also enjoys broad public support.

[…] David Schocken apparently believes that if we "rhino-fy" ourselves and open the newspaper up to debates on "transfer, pro and con," or to proposals on how to persuade and relocate Gazans, we'll be giving readers intellectual enrichment and a "fierce and wild ideological battle," and in doing so, we'll attract new subscribers and lift the government's boycott."

Like any social media influencer worth his salt, far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders announced his arrival in Tel Aviv on Sunday night with a classic "almost there photo," featuring an aerial view of his destination as seen from his plane seat. For a caption, he chose the simple yet effective "Israel," written in Hebrew and flanked by two heart emojis. Propaganda princess Noa Tishby would be so proud.

On Monday, Wilders' X feed featured a cavalcade of smiling selfies with "new friend" Gila Gamliel (science and technology minister), "dear friend" Amir Ohana (speaker of the Knesset), "my friend" Israel Katz (defense minister) "true friend" Eli Cohen (energy minister) and "very, very good friend" Gideon Sa'ar (foreign minister and, apparently, Wilders' favorite of the bunch).
It would also not be the first time Wilders tried to keep his travel itinerary under wraps. Last month, Dutch media outlet NRC reported on his plans to travel to Israel, suggesting that "given Dagan's invitation, a stop in the settlements is likely."

Wilders lashed out, calling the report "totally unacceptable," accusing NRC of putting him and his security detail in danger. Social media users were quick to point out that Raymond de Roon, a lawmaker from Wilders' own Party for Freedom, had already confirmed the plans earlier this week, stating in parliament that Wilders would be visiting Judea and Samaria in order to "orient himself on the situation on the ground." Wilders, though, refused to be bogged down in such minutiae. He quickly announced his plans to take police action against the paper over the leak.

It's a move taken straight from the Israeli government's playbook: If the media insists on reporting your wrongdoings, attack the media rather than take responsibility for your actions. Given all of Wilders' good/true/new/dear friends in the Knesset, it is no surprise they are starting to rub off on him. But with Israel's democracy teetering on the verge of collapse, he may want to look elsewhere for political inspiration.

'Journalists in Gaza Face Immense Pressure From Hamas, but Israel's Attacks Are Killing Them'
The Committee to Protect Journalists is monitoring the Israel-Gaza war at a time when violence against journalists is at an unprecedented level, and they are being targeted 'not because they are criminals, but because they are practicing journalism,' according to the NGO's regional observer
We need access for foreign reporters to enter Gaza, as this would enable the collection of much more detailed and reliable information. Despite the challenges in gathering evidence, we continue to insist on clear and transparent proof to definitively determine the nature of an attack.
