One of the many features we have in @Vivaldi is the Calendar.

We had some important requirements when we made it:

1. Flexibility in display. So many calendars cut a lot of information. We want everything you want to be visible to be visible.

2. Inline editing option. Means you can see everything else while adding or editing an event.

3. Easy to use with the keyboard.

4. Both offline and online accounts. Means you can choose whether events are stored in the cloud or just locally on your computer.

If you have not tried it, give it a try. Available on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Bonus : Makes it easier to move away from Big Tech.

If you are looking to move away from your Big Tech browser, maybe it is time to give Vivaldi a try?

A few things worth mentioning:

1. Workspaces and tab stacks.
2. Tab tiles.
3. Vivaldi Social, Mastodon server.
4. Encrypted sync.
5. Built in tracker and ad blocker.
6. No crypto built in.
7. No AI built in.

Vivaldi is made in Norway and Iceland and our servers are hosted in Iceland.

3% Do not want to switch and love Big Tech.

I guess this makes sense. You are here.

Now, please help you friends and family switch. For their sake, but also for all of us. The world is better with them joining us.

Have a wonderful day!

We have a new release for you. Vivaldi 7.1 on Windows, Mac and Linux.

My favorite new feature is the weather widget. I have added 4 of them. Allows me to see weather and time in 4 different places.

Enjoy!

You are here. That makes you unique. You have made a good choice to take a step away from Big Tech. Now, get more people to join us. Help them with the initial process of setting things up.

If you have not done so already, download an alternative browser, such as Vivaldi as well. Consider whether you can move away from other Big Tech services. At Vivaldi, for example, we use Whereby for video conferences. Many of us have moved to Linux. Many of us use LibreOffice, instead of Microsoft office. There are options if you look for them. It is easy to go with Big Tech, but if you think the world would be better without them or if they had less power, know that you can make a difference.

Alfred is the best productivity app on macOS, and it’s not even close

Laptop on a desk displaying a graphic of a magnifying glass over a black hat with a purple band.
If you’re looking for a Spotlight replacement on your Mac that can aid in productivity, there’s no better option than Alfred. Alfred is a complete third-party replacement for Spotlight search. It offers a far more extensible and powerful platform with plenty of configuration, while retaining the same speed, ease of access, and sleek design that Spotlight is known for. While Apple’s default Spotlight search is a powerful tool for accessing apps, files, or searching the internet, it pales in comparison to Alfred.

Yes, 3rd party innovation can often be better, especially when they listen to what their users really want.

On Linux I use Krunner which is also quite integrated into the browser history, bookmarks, apps, etc, but it stops short of having controls for apps like Spotify. Linux also has Albert, but it is no relation to Alfred, apart from them doing similar things, and Albert does have a media player integration. Although, I’d venture to say that Krunner and Albert on Linux are probably on par with the free version of Albert on macOS.

Update your Mac ⚠️RIGHT NOW⚠️.

Apple recently addressed a macOS vulnerability that allows attackers to bypass System Integrity Protection (SIP) and install malicious kernel drivers by loading third-party kernel extensions.

Thanks to Whiskey, You Will Be Gaming on Your Mac More Than Ever

The image shows a dimly lit bar scene, with shelves of liquor bottles blurred in the background. In the foreground, a bottle of whisky, a glass of amber liquid, and a laptop displaying a pixelated video game are arranged on a wooden surface. The laptop's screen showcases a scene seemingly from a retro-style role-playing game, vibrant colours adding a touch of fantasy to the otherwise mature environment. The bar's soft lighting creates a warm, inviting ambiance, contrasting with the focus on the digital world displayed on the screen.
Whiskey is a free app that you can download right now, and use to play Windows games on your Mac. It brings together the WINE compatibility layer as well as Apple’s own Game Porting Kit, while removing all the nerdy setup and hassle involved with both.

So it seems that Whiskey is stronger than WINE!

It seems to be a bit like the Bottles app on Linux. In my own case, Steam on Linux is playing most games that I want to play, but if you want to play games that are not on Steam, then I suppose Whiskey and similar apps would be the way to go.

Unfortunately, I have to look for a new job.

I'm an #iOS and #macOS #software #developer, experienced in #UIKit, #AppKit, #ObjectiveC, #Swift and #SwiftUI, have worked with the #Parse framework as well as #Realm / #MongoDB and the whole toolchain around it. I have been working in software development for about 30 years and am looking for a remote position (permanent role, preferably in an AT/DE startup).

So if you know someone who knows someone. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏻

Did you know there is a built-in Internet speed test utility on your Mac? No need to get an app or use an ad-filled website. Just launch the Terminal app and type "networkquality" and press return. You'll get a nice impartial measure of your download and upload speed. #Mac #macOS

Apple fixes 2 Zero-Days exploited to breach MacOS Systems. :apple_inc:

Apple has released emergency security updates for macOS Sequoia that fix two zero-day vulnerabilities that “may have been actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems”. As per usual, Apple didn’t share details about the attacks in which patched vulnerabilities are exploited.

[CVE-2024-44309 & CVE-2024-44308]

https://support.apple.com/en-us/121753

#apple #macos #update #it #security #privacy #engineer #media #tech #news
Apple has transitioned to using Intel processors on Macs in June 2006 and stopped shipping them altogether in June 2023, after starting using its own silicon in 2020.

The two vulnerabilities “may have been actively exploited on Intel-based Mac systems”, but it’s unclear at this time whether that means that they can’t be exploited on Apple-based Macs.

[⚠️In any case, all MacOS Sequoia users should update their systems as soon as possible.⚠️]

CVE-2024-44309 affects WebKit, the browser engine used in the Safari web browser and all iOS and iPadOS web browsers, and can be triggered when it’s made to process maliciously crafted web content. It can enable a cross site scripting (XSS) attack.

CVE-2024-44308 affects JavaScriptCore (the built-in JavaScript engine for WebKit) and can likewise be exploited via maliciously crafted web content. It can lead to arbitrary code execution.

<Both vulnerabilities have been reported by security researchers Clément Lecigne and Benoît Sevens of Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG).>
Apple has also released security patches for iOS, iPadOS, visionOS and its Safari web browser. The updates are available for the following devices and operating systems:

• iOS 18.1.1 and iPadOS 18.1.1 - iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 13-inch, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 7th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later
<https://support.apple.com/en-us/121752>
• iOS 17.7.2 and iPadOS 17.7.2 - iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 13-inch, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later
<https://support.apple.com/en-us/121754>

• visionOS 2.1.1 - Apple Vision Pro

#macOS is by no means perfect (although, y’know, close). One glaring design error is the menu bar, which doesn’t handle the – uhum – edge case where there are too many menu bar icons to display on screen (either because they bump up against the current app’s menu or, on the laptops, the notch… which, well, don’t get me started on the notch…)

Anyway, so a lovely little indie app called Ice fixes the problem the way #Apple should have.

Screenshot of Ice, active, with additional menu bar icons being shown underneath the main menu bar on macOS.

You know you can use your mouse and keyboard between different Macs using Universal Control and copy/paste between them (which makes it really easy when manually migrating settings, etc., between machines), but did you know you can also copy/paste whole files using Terminal:

On the first Mac:

cat my-file.txt | pbcopy

On the second Mac:

pbpaste > my-file.txt

Piping to pbcopy is something you’ll likely find useful in general.

(You can also drag/drop files to Finder.)
