New post on The Digital Renaissance: Why People Treat Macs Differently

“Reviewers seem to treat Macs differently when it comes to how they perceive particular upgrades—here’s why I think that happens”

I’ve waited Years for Apple to give a Damn about Gaming — with Cyberpunk 2077 coming to the Mac, it’s finally happening.

Apple silicon Macs will get their ultimate gaming test. One of the most graphically demanding and visually impressive games in recent years, will soon get a Mac release, according to CD Projekt Red.

https://www.cyberpunk.net/en/news/50947/just-announced-cyberpunk-2077-ultimate-edition-coming-to-mac

#apple #silicon #mac #cyberpunk2077 #gaming #engineer #media #it #tech #news
The announcement was published on CD Projekt Red's blog and also appeared briefly during Apple's pre-recorded MacBook Pro announcement video. The game will be sold on the Mac App Store, Steam, GOG and the Epic Game Store when it launches, and it will be labeled the Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which simply means it also includes Phantom Liberty, the expansion that was released a couple of years after the original game.

Apple has been working with AAA game publishers to try to get the games they made for consoles or Windows gaming PCs onto the Mac or iPhone, including Assassin's Creed Mirage, Death Stranding and Resident Evil Village, among others. But the addition of Cyberpunk 2077 is notable because of its history of running poorly on low-end hardware and because it uses new technologies like ray-traced illumination, reflections and shadows. It also heavily relies on AI upscaling like DLSS or FSR to be playable even on high-end machines.

An everyday capitalism-related warning: if you’re planning on buying an Apple Watch online with the solo loop, don’t. You can’t just send the strap back if there’s a problem with it (mine caused contact dermatitis after a few day’s use). They’ll happily take the whole order back though because, well, fuck you, I guess. Anyway, caveat emptor and all that. And your daily reminder that trillion-dollar corporations are all asshats.

Right, as you were.

Future Apple Watches Could Have Sensors Embedded in the Bands: Maybe Not A Great Idea

Five Apple Watches all mounted on silver coloured stands next to each other. The faces show large time digits for 10:09.
It sounds good as such sensors may provide some good functionality, but it is also the reason I sold my LG Watch and never bought another one from them.

The reason is that straps, like batteries, are the first things that start breaking. The strap usually goes way before the battery does, and if it is any form of silicone/plastic strap, this usually happens after just a year and a bit.

Then you’ll discover those straps are really pricey with the sensors inside. Also, you can forget about having two or three alternative colour straps for other occasions, as that will also be expensive.

Want to buy a cheaper alternative strap? Well, then you lose some functionality on your watch. Oh, and seeing this integrates with the watch, you’ll have to buy replacement straps from Apple otherwise they won’t work.

Great for the manufacturer (Apple), not great for the consumer.

Apple creates Private Cloud Compute VM to let Researchers find Bugs. :apple_inc:

The company also seeks to improve the system's security and has expanded its security bounty program to include rewards of up to [$1 Million] for vulnerabilities that could compromise “the fundamental security and privacy guarantees of PCC”.

Apple created a Virtual Research Environment to allow public access to testing the security of its Private Cloud Compute system, and released the source code for some “key components” to help researchers analyze the privacy and safety features on the architecture.

The company also makes available the Private Cloud Compute Security Guide, which explains the architecture and technical details of the components and the way they work.

Interacting with the Private Cloud Compute client from the Virtual Research Environment.

Apple provides a Virtual Research Environment (VRE), which replicates locally the cloud intelligence system and allows inspecting it as well as testing its security and hunting for issues.

“The VRE runs the PCC node software in a virtual machine with only minor modifications. Userspace software runs identically to the PCC node, with the boot process and kernel adapted for virtualization,” Apple explains, sharing documentation on how to set up the Virtual Research Environment on your device.

VRE is present on macOS Sequia 15.1 Developer Preview and it needs a device with Apple silicaon and at least 16GB of unified memory.

#psa If you use #Dropbox and are a #writer or #author, do you know about the Offline Files Access changes in Dropbox? It affects Basic Plan (free) users only.

Empirically, Dropbox Basic syncs any changes you make anywhere to the cloud, but only indicates a sync occurred on devices (phones, tablets). In the Files app on iPhone, I see a ghost image with a down arrow in a cloud symbol beside files changed elsewhere. I have to open them to get them to sync locally. If I have no data access at my moment of need, the local file either doesn't exist yet or is out-of-date. For some reason, my Mac always syncs and downloads, at least if it is open. It's my iPhone (likely my iPad, too) that don't.

What cued me is the notifications in the Dropbox app.

I've attached a screenshot. The notifications imply this is a new monetization feature. Sadly, a good one from Dropbox's company standpoint as it may get many more people to pay a minimum of $120 a year. (BTW, #Apple #iCloud now offers Keep Downloaded even in their free 5 GB plan, though I'm still testing to see if I trust this always works.)

#Scrivener uses an API, which seems to cause my Mac to sync file last changed on iPhone or iPad when I turn on my Mac... However, sometimes I need to pause Dropbox syncing and resume it on my Mac to get the Scrivener files to sync. Could this be the cause of those intermittent sync errors I've been getting lately, because I'm not paying $10/m for offline access? I can't definitively say.

In any case, we Scrivener users know you need online access when opening Scrivener on iPad or iPhone to get the latest files, consistent with the issue. There's no auto-download feature in Scrivener for iPhone and iPad, and on the Mac it's the Dropbox app controlling the syncing... oh, my.

All this seems to imply that without a paid subscription, Basic Plan Dropbox isn't good for disaster recovery after all data access disappears (hurricane, earthquake, black out). Of course, if data is important to us, the retort is "Pay for your f***ing security!"

Has anyone looked into this?

Linked is the May 20, 2024 Dropbox FAQ on this, and it's somewhat inscrutable. The image is of the notifications I've received that imply some change.

Anyone want to analyze this?

Please boost so we might some who can discuss this. #boostingIsSharing

Seeing the photo of the Palm screen listing "Graffiti" reminds me...

I could approach *thirty words per minute* with my Palm devices.

The trick was the well designed "shorthand" called Graffiti. Basically, every letter (with the exception of 'X') was a single stroke. It was genius! 👍 💕

On my iOS devices I can barely input three words without a typo... 🙄

>>>>> WHY ISN"T THERE A GRAFFITI INTERFACE FOR IOS?!?!? <<<<<

It would be SO much better than typing with my thumbs.

Searched and found this on an Apple forum...

May 22, 2014 8:29 AM

"I'm with you on this request. I've tried several of the note-taking and handwriting apps for iOS but NOTHING is even close to the ease and efficiency that Palm Graffiti offered for handwriting recognition."

"Even Apple's old Newton handwriting system was better than anything out there right now."

Note the year 2014. No answers since then as far as I can tell?! 🤷‍♂️

Update. "#Oregon’s legislature just passed a #RightToRepair bill over the objection of #Apple lobbyists, and which would require Apple to change an anti-repair design in the iPhone and other devices. If signed by the governor, it will become by far the strongest repair law in the nation."

Companies and orgs that have suspended advertising on twitter this week :mastodance:

Apple
Comcast
Disney
European Commission
IBM
Lionsgate
Paramount
Warner Brothers
NBC Universal

Yeah, yeah, what took them so long? And how long will they stay away?
But it's a start. And better late than never.
Hopefully, more will find the courage and quit funding that cesspool; after all, there is safety in numbers.

#China quiere devolverle las sanciones y vetos a Estados Unidos donde más le duele: el #iPhone y #Apple

Technically #Apple does not allow social media (user generated content) apps without blocking function

If Elon continues this way soon it will belong in the bottom part described and not allowed at all, hopefully..

https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/
1.2 User-Generated Content

Apps with user-generated content present particular challenges, ranging from intellectual property infringement to anonymous bullying. To prevent abuse, apps with user-generated content or social networking services must include:

A method for filtering objectionable material from being posted to the app
A mechanism to report offensive content and timely responses to concerns
The ability to block abusive users from the service
Published contact information so users can easily reach you

Apps with user-generated content or services that end up being used primarily for pornographic content, Chatroulette-style experiences, objectification of real people (e.g. “hot-or-not” voting), making physical threats, or bullying do not belong on the App Store and may be removed without notice. If your app includes user-generated content from a web-based service, it may display incidental mature “NSFW” content, provided that the content is hidden by default and only displayed when the user turns it on via your website.
