It always kinda bothers me when the studies of #autistic behaviour rely on ‘parents reporting’. Like here. Multilingual household often means more multicultural experience of the parents, therefore broader definition of ‘normal’ behavior for them, so the very same children behavior is less likely to be seen as problematic.
It’s now said so much more that #autism is about internal experiences, not about how society is dissatisfied with your behavior - but still there are studies for some reason that evaluate it based on other people reports.

When I was a kid I had a lot of weird energy and telepathy experiences so this is probably why I find myself believing it easily.
I also did a lot of research into non-speaking autism for a book on communication and this already broke down my outdated belief system on non-speaking minds.

Can anyone recommend a good book/site that goes through step by step how to make your way through the world as an #autistic adult who's been mollycoddled all their life and has no clue how the grown up world works? I want to be independent, but everything is just a blank void. I'm using ChatGPT to help demystify the process of becoming independent, but I'd really like a real human's guidance. Preferably from a UK perspective.
and yes, so-called newer ABA is better, in some ways, but it's not actually better. ABA forces kids to suppress their autistic behaviours in order to fit neurotypical molds, with a reward/punishment model and often without access to expressive language.
ABA was common in the 1990s, including in fields such as speech therapy which weren't officially ABA.
talk to #ActuallyAutistic #Autistic people instead of believing the pretty whining of 'autism parents' or parents that make their kids' diagnoses their full-on personality.
They have whatever response they have to any announcement or policies from the right wing opposition, but then they also release a statement from their "disabled" policy unit who are very clever autistic people who use evidence to just burn holes in the bullshit that these bastards say which provides so much ammunition for comedians and newspapers.

You can ask people what they might like in a chill room, but snacks, family photo albums, coffee table books, plushies, puzzles, playing cards, comic books, fidget toys, and lego bricks are all reasonable things to try. And it doesn't have to be a solo space – a quiet, out-of-the-way spot to sit and have a conversation is also nice. Protip: If there is an aquarium in the home, use that to anchor the chill space. Nothing beats a good fish tank for chilling out, though a window with a picturesque view is a close second.
If you're someone who would like to have a chill room available at someone else's holiday gathering, try asking them to set one up, or maybe offer to help set it up if that's not too much trouble. Sometimes all you have to do is ask.
Good luck with your holidays, make an effort to include the people whose needs usually get overlooked, and don't let anyone make you feel bad for not being able to keep up with the neurotypical social norms.

My question is, is self-diagnosis of autism a truly valid conclusion/diagnosis or a new-age internet phenomena to allow people to act entitled with disregard for others?
I certainly still do mask my emotions and remain in torturous situations I am forced to endure, but isn’t that being an adult and focusing on the wellbeing and comfort of others?
Of course, there is no binary answer and everything is situational, but these are the things I think about.
I don’t believe in self-diagnosis in general and especially in mental/psychological realms, as the tool being used for diagnosis may be compromised.
My friends said something profound when he mentioned how he was happier once he was diagnosed as autistic and he was normal and didn’t need the antidepressants to fix the anxiety and depression of masking and not fitting in.
My big question is…
CONT ->
Most of my friends in adulthood exhibit lots of autistic traits and many have official diagnoses.
I have been building boundaries after my suicide attempt and that means unmasking and not flatly let things happen to me without saying a word as to not make any disruptions to the people around me.
This has pushed my behavior more into the realm of recognized autistic behaviors.
All my friends seem to recognize me as autistic.
CONT ->
I’ve always been called a sensitive kid growing up. I’ve always been smart and brainy and always have felt like an alien visiting Earth.
I grew up and went out in the world and found people who wear the label of “autistic” with pride and I started learning about “neurodivergence.”
After my suicide attempt, I started looking at my behaviors and tendencies and realized that I may have been “masking” my whole life.
