Okay, I want to take a moment to talk about toot-shaming behavior on Fedi. But first, I want to thank the person who blocked me for introducing me to the term "pornado"—I will cherish it.

So, there's a kind of reply-person on Fedi who seems to like to *vocally* use moderation tools. It's not enough to block or report someone, they have to loudly announce it, to rub it in. It's a "fuck you *slams door*" kind of response.

I typed out a paragraph defending my OP, but you can see for yourself, it's linked below.

While discussing where to take this post, my girlfriend pointed out that the behavior whiffs of the same thing I was talking about in my "doubt caltrops" post. It's a way of policing behavior that isn't against any rules, but that *they* find personally objectionable.

Just filter/block/report as necessary and move the fuck on.

A screenshot of a reply to the linked post. It reads @alice glad you did not send those pics to your mum.

Not happy you sent them to me. The Caturday Pornado continues. *blocked*

The domain mirage.foxb612.com and IP address 65.108.53.178 have been blocked (defederated) from Enby.Life. These are part of a fediverse crawler system that indexes servers based on the country where they are physically located. This wouldn't normally be against our rules, but the crawler goes to great lengths to de-anonymize instances, including sending fake-signed ActivityPub probes to obtain the server's true IP address. Requests from the crawler use a web browser's User Agent to evade filters, and documentation on the website mentions that CloudFlare bypasses are also in use.

Given the complexity of setting up something like this, we believe that the crawler is likely operating with bad intentions. While there could be some use for an index of instances based on community region, tracking the actual physical location of the server backends is highly suspicious. I'd encourage all instance admins to consider whether something like this poses a threat, and to take appropriate action.

For anyone interested in going beyond a simple domain block, please see these log excerpts typical of being crawled via AP probes. Logs are taken from a non-standard Sharkey deployment and may not directly translate to other software, but I've tried to include as much detail as possible anyway.

Sharkey admins can check whether you've been scanned by searching for backend log patterns like this (make sure to replace your instance hostname where appropriate):
Feb 17 20:10:21 campsite run-sharkey.sh[241576]: INFO * [apserv sigcheck] req-yzi /users/9fpwmts9tv (by Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:127.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/127.0) apparently from mirage.foxb612.com: we don't know the user for keyId https://mirage.foxb612.com/kiite/key/enby.life/1739823020/NHc8pVYoNGmLk3My/main-key, trying to fetch via https://mirage.foxb612.com/kiite/key/enby.life/1739823020/NHc8pVYoNGmLk3My/main-key
Alternately, anyone with Activity Logging in place can check for AP fetch errors like this:
id,at,duration,host,request_uri,object_uri,accepted,result,object,context_hash
a4n23pddff,2025-02-24 20:10:24.433000 +00:00,894.86,mirage.foxb612.com,https://mirage.foxb612.com/kiite/key/enby.life/1740427823/Y93ZjgZHZlxNSuxa/main-key,,false,Error: invalid content type of AP response - content type is not application/activity+json or application/ld+json: https://mirage.foxb612.com/kiite/key/enby.life/1740427823/Y93ZjgZHZlxNSuxa/main-key,,
A final indicator is reverse-proxy logs showing this domain as part of an HTTP Signature header. Here's an example from our Caddy server:
Feb 24 20:10:25 campsite caddy[916]: 2025/02/24 20:10:25.329        ERROR        http.log.access.log0        handled request        {

RE: https://enby.life/notes/a4vj8c2xq1

Rather than introducing hierarchies, consider searching for moderation schemes that are simpler: https://support.delta.chat/t/beehive-moderation/3547

Decentralized #moderation is a huge design space with subjective moderation of Cabal (https://cabal.chat/) and Aether (https://getaether.net/) for large groups, or Matrix having to deal with moderation of a large number of public chats in a federated system (https://archive.fosdem.org/2023/schedule/event/decentralising_moderation/)

@ivory

There is another problem there that is not technical.

#Moderation

My #fedivision (#vision inspired by the #fediverse): Within the next 20 years people will begin to transfer the structure of the fediverse and how it is managed to the real world.

Citizens will be able to choose the country they wanna live in just the way they today choose the software (#friendica #mastodon #misskey ...), the server and the app they use to socially interact with each other. If they don't like how their server (formerly known as country) is governed they can pack their things and move to another one with close to zero transaction cost.

Today users can voluntarily give money to admins to pay communication infrastructure like #servers and cost's for #administration & #moderation. Today we all are obliged to pay #taxes (except for clever antisocial actor's) in our countries. In the future we can decide where (if at all) our money goes to. There will be admins and servers that have special real world agendas (green energy, strengthening local communities, raising awareness for minorities, air taxis ...) And there might even be servers that pay their users for being there. This money will be demanded from #companies or other non-social actor's like #billionaire's for not de-federating them. They will pay the fee's as it will be their only way to socially interact with or show commercials to others.

In 20 years admins and moderators will be what #politicians and #bureaucrats are today. Servers are what countries are today. Just like #Wikipedia is today what the Encyclopædia Britannica was 20 years ago.

#EncyclopaediaBritannica #moderator #Politics #future #utopia

Our team works hard every day to create a safe environment for the people who choose to spend time here, and when guidelines are violated, we take action.

This is our commitment to our community, but we understand it is also our responsibility. Here's a blogpost to explain more.

Our app may be 15 years old, but our values are timeless. They’re rooted in first principles that don’t change every four years.

"More and more people are now questioning why social media even worked on the least social of structures. They want change. Hopefully, with open social media - New Social - we can offer them something different. An internet of social alcoves, where you can choose how to moderate your content."

Check out the thoughts of @saskia on Meta, moderation and Zuckerberg in her latest blog post.

Hey, anyone know if mastodon.social still federates with Meta’s Threads?

(Assuming they have some common decency and don’t but just wanted to make sure.)

Facebook is now "fact-free", after Zuck visited Mar-a-lago and contributed $1M to Sir #TrumpVirus

https://apnews.com/article/meta-facts-trump-musk-community-notes-413b8495939a058ff2d25fd23f2e0f43

So now, following the #disinformation invite in Muskville, social media as defined by Facebook et al is devoid of fact-checks & moderation. In the name of "free speech". Rah rah "alternative facts"! Reality is now optional. :-(

Most of my vintage Facebook/IG friends have now signed off.

Pathetic. R.I.P. #moderation

I was watching a news show and then suddenly, ugh, Zuck on the screen 🤢

He's going on about how he's not going to even try to moderate for truth any more and is going to move to Texas to be more like Twitter. 🤮

They have to stop trying to remove disinformation because all the AI spambots they intend to flood their network with have no concept of truth of meaning at all 😆

The bots will pretend to be black, or that they're donating to charities, or have a family life, or whatever.

Just meaninglessness, everywhere, all the time. That's the future of corporate social.

So glad I'm out of that bollocks.

Because I discover more and more threads about how bad I and our moderation habits are on chaos.social. Please consider that many of these threads are from people that are blocked for a reason. They may have an interest in looking better in the discussion than they are. So please don't trust everything you hear about me, chaos.social and the moderation. #chaossocial #moderation
