Where are we seeing the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group? Look around the world. It’s called genocide. I never thought I would say that America is helping fund it but here we are. Military industrial complex shows its power and makes money for the arms makers. Americans realize what your tax dollars are paying for. Tell your representatives to stop misusing your tax dollars. #Palestine #usa #taxes #death #war #world #america #americans #zionist

No less than 76 #Democrats just voted with Republicans to overturn the #IRS's "defi broker rule" which would have required crypto firms like #MarcAndreessen's #Uniswap to collect information on their users and in so doing discourage the use of these platforms for #moneylaundering by criminals and rogue nuclear states (#NorthKorea *loves* Uniswap) and by the very wealthy to avoid paying #taxes.

The new wave of #memecoin scams like #TrumpCoin are also all facilitated/perpetrated by these decentralized trading platforms.

If any of these people are your representative you should do what you can to make sure they are primaried because they are not representing your interests. At a minimum call them and yell at them (this works better than most people think!)

The corruption of the US government by #crypto bros is extremely bipartisan.

"#Musk's #DOGE fires federal tech team that built free #tax-filing site"

#MAGA parasocially identifies with #plutocracy robbing them. Rich MAGA "doesn't pay #taxes." Poor MAGA hates taxes

So they think this is for them! "This hurts black people" and so they like it

The trick is mind-numbingly simple:

Be a stupid *poor* cruel ghoul

Adore *rich* cruel ghouls

Who rob them, see them as cattle to abuse

And they never. fucking. see. it.

Post from Alt National Park Service

Since Congress's allotted funds have already been improperly unallocated, U.S.
citizens are questioning whether they are legally required to continue paying
federal taxes. If Donald Trump can override our elected officials' control of the
purse strings, we are effectively entering a period of taxation without
representation.
It's time for a modern-day Tea Party-let's throw the tea into the "Gulf of America."
We are working on a court case, and a tax strike may be legally possible.
Remember: no taxation without representation. We encourage other Americans to
bring cases against the government to set precedent. Let's start a federal tax
strike.

Are there any coherent arguments against taxing very high incomes and wealth, to reduce social inequality ?

I don't think so. Three of the main arguments are:
1. Income and wealth belong to individuals - tax is theft;
2. Individuals make better investment decisions than governments or other social bodies; and
3. Unless people keep all or most of the income and wealth they have gained there will be no incentive to work, so everybody gets poorer.

The first argument breaks down because all income and wealth is social in origin - most profit arises from business 'externalities' - unpaid labour in the home, state education, free use of resources, use of public roads and other infrastructure... None of the world's major industries would be profitable if they paid for their use of these free resources.

The second argument breaks down because private investment only goes after financial returns or hobby-horses (like space rockets) not wider priorities with no quick investment returns (like education, home insulation, rewilding) - and a lot goes on socially useless investment in assets like housing just to extract rents - a disutility for almost everyone.

The third argument is disproved by history. In the 'Trente Glorieuses' - the 30 years or so after the war - marginal tax rates on both income and property were 70-90%, even in the US - but these were exceptionally hard-working years, with high economic growth, improving living standards, better education, more caring societies, etc, etc... When taxes were reduced from the 1980s on, social progress began to reverse.

Musk says the IRS direct file is being shut down, but I just accessed it via the IRS website. However when I tried to click the link from an IRS email I'd gotten previously, it wouldn't work. Just FYI

Update: I successfully filed my taxes using IRS Direct File! If it's available in your state, you should too!

My #fedivision (#vision inspired by the #fediverse): Within the next 20 years people will begin to transfer the structure of the fediverse and how it is managed to the real world.

Citizens will be able to choose the country they wanna live in just the way they today choose the software (#friendica #mastodon #misskey ...), the server and the app they use to socially interact with each other. If they don't like how their server (formerly known as country) is governed they can pack their things and move to another one with close to zero transaction cost.

Today users can voluntarily give money to admins to pay communication infrastructure like #servers and cost's for #administration & #moderation. Today we all are obliged to pay #taxes (except for clever antisocial actor's) in our countries. In the future we can decide where (if at all) our money goes to. There will be admins and servers that have special real world agendas (green energy, strengthening local communities, raising awareness for minorities, air taxis ...) And there might even be servers that pay their users for being there. This money will be demanded from #companies or other non-social actor's like #billionaire's for not de-federating them. They will pay the fee's as it will be their only way to socially interact with or show commercials to others.

In 20 years admins and moderators will be what #politicians and #bureaucrats are today. Servers are what countries are today. Just like #Wikipedia is today what the Encyclopædia Britannica was 20 years ago.

Engadget: Australia demands big social platforms pay local news publishers. “Australia is not messing around when it comes to big tech. Last month the country introduced a law that, if passed, would ban all people 16 and younger from social media. Now, its coming after social media and search engines alike, ensuring they pay publishers for their content after Meta backed out of doing so, the […]

Ronald Reagan’s real legacy, charted and graphed. Spoiler: It’s not the bedtime story we’ve been told.

A visual breakdown of the inequality, debt, and mass incarceration still shaping our lives.

'Trickle-down' economics was never real.

A collage of seven charts critiquing socioeconomic trends tied to Ronald Reagan’s presidency, each marked with his face & arrows highlighting the 1980s:

1. A chart shows rising income inequality from 1947 to 2017, with disparities widening in the early 1980s.
2. A graph compares healthcare spending to life expectancy, with the U.S. diverging in 1985 due to high costs & limited gains.
3. A chart shows the top marginal tax rate dropping sharply during Reagan’s presidency.
4. A graph tracks federal debt as a percentage of GDP, which begins rising steeply in the 1980s.
5. A chart highlights growing U.S. debt in the 1980s, both in 2014 dollars & as a percentage of GDP.
6. A chart compares tuition, income, & minimum wage growth in Illinois since 1970, with tuition surging in the early 1980s.
7. Two graphs on incarceration show prison populations rising sharply after Reagan’s 1980s "War on Drugs."

Charts reveal long-term impacts of Reagan-era policies on inequality, debt, & incarceration.

Back in 2021, we launched a series of stories documenting the key ways that the ultrawealthy — #billionaires like #ElonMusk, Jeff Bezos, and Peter Thiel — avoid #taxes. Here are 10 of their strategies.

"A Federal Trade Commission lawsuit is leading to changes for consumers who use H&R Block’s do-it-yourself online tax filing products. A proposed FTC settlement would stop H&R Block from unfairly requiring consumers seeking to downgrade to a cheaper H&R Block product to contact customer service, from unfairly deleting users' previously entered data and from making deceptive claims about “free” tax filing.

The tax-filing company has agreed to a proposed settlement that will require the company to make a number of changes for the 2025 tax filing season in addition to longer-term changes. The settlement would also require the company to pay $7 million to the FTC to be used to redress consumers harmed by the company’s unlawful practices.

“American taxpayers who seek tax-filing help should be able to choose the services they need—and know the truth about how much they’ll pay,” said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “The FTC’s action today will help lower the stress and expense of tax season for millions of taxpayers.”

The FTC filed an administrative lawsuit against H&R Block in February 2024, charging that the company deceptively advertised that its online tax filing products were “free” when many—if not most—consumers could not actually file for free."

Small violin klaxon:

Quoted in FT regarding tax measures in Rachel reeves' budget, specifically various inheritance tax reliefs:

'Historic Houses, which represents more than 1,000 independently owned and operated houses, castles and gardens in the UK, said its members were in effect “rural small- and medium-sized enterprises” that were “often asset rich but cash poor”.'

If I was looking to secure sympathy over tax rises, stately home owners would not be my choice of example.

The Titanic wreckage tours by #OceanGate are a stark example of how #billionaires spend money that they do not pay in #taxes. It is unconscionable that #taxpayers should bear further the burden of rescue costs. Billionaires must be made to pay every cent of the US Coast Guard effort in this completely unnecessary and offensive tragedy.
