Important court ruling on copyright ought to lead to a blossoming of UK open culture – but will it?
walledculture.orgThere’s a post on the Creative Commons blog with some important news about copyright (in the UK, at least): In November 2023, the Court of Appeal in THJ v Sheridan offered an important clarification of the originality requirement under UK copyrigh…
The attention stems from a first-of-its-kind review of copyright law in the age of artificial intelligence. #Music #UMG #SocialMedia #TikTok #Copyright #IP: "Universal Music is set to pull its millions of songs from TikTok after a breakdown in talks over payments.
The move would mean the social media platform would no longer have access to songs by artists including Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Drake.
Universal accused TikTok of "bullying" and said it wanted to pay a "fraction" of the rate other social media sites do for access to its vast catalogue.
TikTok said Universal was presenting a "false narrative and rhetoric".
Music companies earn royalty payments when their songs are played on streaming and social media platforms.
Although TikTok - which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance - has more than one billion users, it accounts for just 1% of Universal's total revenue, the label said."

Apart from the #education & #censorship issues here, & the "liberty" of a minority to dictate what everyone else can see, there's a #copyright issue. But it seems that the school hand-drew clothing on the book pages (which is lawful under #FirstSale) & did not reprint copies with altered images (which would be infringement).

'Twice during the memoir, Gillies brings into contention the true authorship of Tomorrow – which is officially credited to Johns and Gillies – claiming that Joannou co-wrote the song too. This is no small claim. Tomorrow has generated millions of dollars in royalties for the songwriters; it was the most-played track on US modern rock radio in 1995, a year in which Wonderwall by Oasis, Better Man by Pearl Jam and When I Come Around by Green Day were all jostling for high rotation. The single sold over a quarter of a million copies in Australia before the label removed it from sale, for fear of overexposure; it has since been licensed to video games Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Suffice to say: it has been a nice little earner.'
