[Film] The #ApacheStronghold defending #sacred #OakFlat land from a #CopperMine

The Real News Network
May 21, 2024

"In the heart of the #Arizona high desert lies a battle for the soul of the land. The ancient, sacred grounds of #Apache #Native territory are under threat from a looming giant — a massive copper mine that promises riches for the locals, and a pathway to the so-called green transition. But, as is often the case, it comes at a cost.

"The #SanCarlosApache tribe calls it Chi’chil Bildagoteel; English speakers call it Oak Flat. It sits on a mountainous plateau within a 17.3-kilometer oasis in the #TontoNationalForest. #RioTinto and #BHP, two of the world’s biggest mining companies, have staked their claim here through a joint venture called #ResolutionCopper. For over 10 years they’ve been lobbying governments for the right to build a colossal mine that would cover roughly 7,000 acres of surface area, and extend more than a mile into the ground.

"The only thing that stands in their way is the #resistance of the Apache Stronghold, a nonprofit community organization of #Natives and non-Natives uniting to counter ongoing #colonization, defend holy sites and protect freedom of religion, which was created to protect Chi’chil Bildagoteel.

Video from dueling protests outside Supreme Court with pro-trans side in control

On Dec 4, Ford Fischer posted this video clip clearly showing the failure of the police attempt to protect anti-trans bigots from being confronted by trans rights activists. Cops had set a barrier across the sidewalk from the steps to the street, but once the crowd got even a part of First Street NE this was easily flanked.

Some of the bigots displayed an odd "Stop Transing Gay kids" message. This is a blatant and hypocritical attempt to wedge trans folks off the LGBTQ alliance. It won't work: an attack on one is an attack on all, just like NATO's Article 5. No way in hell we are going to leave trans kids to fight alone against a genocide!

"Gender affirming care is so cut and dry. If any anti depressant reduced suicides by 73% it would be called a miracle"

Listening to this #SCOTUS hearing on the #trans care ban for minors... some of these (In)Justices are disingenuous motherfuckers. News to nobody, I know, but just listening to their fatuous ignorance invites damage. Listen but take care, peeps. https://www.supremecourt.gov/oral_arguments/live.aspx

Pro-Trans protesters heavily outnumber bigots outside Supreme Court as TN gender affirming care ban case heard

Video originally posted by Ford Fischer
showing that the crowd taking the street allowed the police separation fence to be flanked so anti-trans bigots could be confronted:

On the 4th of December, the US Supreme Court heard United States v. Skrmetti. This case will decide whether Tennessee's ban on gender affirming care for people under 18 is considered unconstitutional or not.

One of the GOP "justices" has been silent on this, but that still leaves the danger of an adverse 5-4 ruling if that judge votes to overturn this oppressive excuse for a law. If this law is overturned, Trump and his Project 2025 friends will face some major hurdles trying to implement the genocidal anti-trans part of their agenda.

While presumed Christian Nationalist counterprotesters did show up outside, they were outnumbered and surrounded by pro-trans protesters. Early in the day the cops tried to hold the street but as the crowd swelled they lost control of it and the crowd took 1st st NE.

Major OxyContin case headlines December session https://www.scotusblog.com/2023/11/major-oxycontin-case-headlines-december-session/ 'The justices will hear oral argument on Dec. 4 in one of their highest-profile bankruptcy cases in recent memory: Harrington v. Purdue Pharma, a challenge to the approval by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit of a bankruptcy plan for Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin.

Faced with thousands of lawsuits accusing it of having deceptively marketed the highly addictive drug, Purdue Pharma filed for bankruptcy in 2019. It proposed a reorganization plan that would remake the company as a nonprofit devoted to addressing the public health problems caused by the opioid epidemic. But the plan would also release members of the Sackler family, which owned the company and had taken billions of dollars out of the company in recent years, from any future liability for claims against them.

The U.S. Trustee, the division of the Department of Justice that oversees the administration of bankruptcy cases, came to the Supreme Court over the summer, asking the justices to put the plan on hold. The justices agreed to do so and set the case for oral argument in December.

There are two main questions before the court. The first is whether the U.S. Trustee or the Canadian creditors challenging the plan have a right to do so at all, while the second question is whether the court of appeals was correct to confirm the plan. And more broadly, the case raises questions about whether and when it is appropriate to resolve mass tort cases – that is, lawsuits brought by a group of people who have been harmed in a similar way, such as in a plane crash or by a defective product – through the bankruptcy system.'
