"Terrible things are happening outside. At any time of night and day, poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes... Families are torn apart; men, women and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared."

Diary of Anne Frank, Jan 13, 1943

A Cooper's hawk has snatched up a female bluebird from the feeders and is flying off with it. The bluebird is still alive and you can see its terrified expression as it is clutched in the hawk's talons.

Between the weather and my work schedule we haven't been able to do any birding yet this year. We were out looking for Short-eared Owls in December and
while we did see the owls they were too far away with fading light so were unable to get any pictures.

This American Kestrel seemed unimpressed with all the hubbub over the Owls.

Kestrel is perched on a Short-eared Owl information sign facing away while looking to the right. Black tail wings, a layer of gray and copper feathers with black streaks on the wing edges. Dark gray head with a brite white patch on the side of its head. Background is out of focus dark green trees, blue mountains and white clouds.

The Joy of Catching a Fish! 🐟✨
This photo was taken at Halistenkoski in Turku, where large numbers of small fish occasionally swim upstream. During these times, the gulls have a feast, and you can see plenty of them fishing above the rushing waters of the rapids. The surrounding area is a beautiful cultural landscape, and it’s wonderful that you can enjoy nature so close to the city—even though this environment is heavily shaped by human influence. Still, I find it much more diverse than, for example, commercial forests dominated by monocultures. However, the noise from passing cars can be unpleasant, especially during rush hours when people are commuting to and from work.

I Told You We Should Have Left Earlier

This pair of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus) appear to be interacting. It seems all the spots at the bird feeder might be taken.

"The image shows a lovely pair of house finches perched on a curved metal bar. One of the finches has brown and white streaked plumage, while the other has a striking red head and chest with a brown and white streaked body. The blurred background draws your attention directly to these beautiful birds, making them the focal point of the photo. The photograph is signed "© Swede's Photographs" in the bottom right corner." - Copilot

Crested Tit

Taking flight, after pecking out a decent sized chunk of a peanut out, to eat elsewhere.

Feathered Sunshine

This charming male American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) made a visit to my backyard this morning, joining a lively group of others

"When Brown-headed Cowbirds lay eggs in an American Goldfinch nest, the cowbird egg may hatch but the nestling seldom survives longer than three days. The cowbird chick simply can’t survive on the all-seed diet that goldfinches feed their young." - allaboutbirds.org

"The image shows a goldfinch perched on a black metal shepherd's hook. The goldfinch has a bright yellow head and underparts, with a black cap on the top of its head. The wings are black with white markings, and the back is a mix of yellow and olive green. The bird's black beak is short and conical, typical of finches. The background is blurred, highlighting the bird as the main subject of the photograph. The image is signed "© Swede's Photographs" in the bottom right corner." - Copilot with edits

After a few days of quiet observation of the water spot ( a natural spring feeds into the rocks abutting the sea here) these rock parrots allowed me to get close enough to get some lovely images. #birds #birdphotography

Long-Tailed Ducks.

I got lucky with a break in the clouds late afternoon, and found a rather damp spot to lie down, to get as close to water-level as I dared.

On the Moray Firth, in Scotland.

Fair to say this little G9II is performing even better than I expected. Have finally learned to just trust the AF system and it's doing really really nicely.

I'm sailing South to Macquarie Island with Heritage Expeditions and enjoying a little pampering in between the wildlife and wild waves.

A Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan that I photographed on the eastern slope of the high Andes in Ecuador last month. Another great color combination...

I have seen pictures of donkeys marked with #asstodon. It improves my timeline, like #mosstodon (macro photography of mosses), #lichensubscribe (same for lichen). Above hashtags are less obvious than #birdphotography or all the ones with cats. Some others I can never remember, like the Welsh hashtag that is used for pictures of sheep.
And, yes, there are many surprising communities here.

Love the way these magical creatures slowly apparate from within the vegetation as the sun slowly disappears. Exactly like magic. You don't see anything and the next moment, you see them staring straight at you with their bloodshot eyes ;-) #bird #photography #BirdPhotography
