Just found out there is a version of the Iliad where, after the death of Achilles, his mother Thetis turns into a seal and takes revenge by hunting down Helen.

There is an ancient Greek horror story hidden in there somewhere, about Helen being hunted by a vengeful pinniped...

Teaching an online workshop in a few weeks 😊

“I never liked that story anyway”: Tinkering with folktales that don’t click

Do you have a folktale you’d love to tell, but parts of it just don’t click? Have you ever said “it would be a fun story, but I am not sure about the part where…”? Or is there a story you have always disliked, but you can’t quite put a finger on why? Bring it to this practical, hands-on workshop!

Another Hungarian Roma #FolktaleMoment

24 brothers (12 sets of twins) come across a castle with 24 enchanted princesses. They try to break the enchantment but ultimately fail. The youngest brother moves on, marries a merchant girl, and has 24 sons.

When the 24 boys grow up they return to the castle, break the enchantment, and marry the princesses 😄

#FolktaleMoment of the day:

Just read a Hungarian Roma folktale where the villain is "the wolf with the naked butt."

Least threatening villain ever? 😆

(No, the naked butt is never explained)

A bunch of cool things are dropping tomorrow:

Folk Tales of the Cosmos by storyteller Janet Dowling

A Kickstarter campaign for a tarot-based #ttrpg from the creators of the Sefirot deck

#GenV (The Boys spinoff)

There's probably more but I'm excited for these

Doing some #storytelling today at the Aquincum Amphitheater in Budapest 😊 Two-day Roman festival, gladiators, battles, living history, all kinds of fun.

I have two sets of stories, one of little known Greek and Roman myths (such as an alternate version of Achilles' heel), and one of Caucasian Nart sagas (since we have Sarmatian reenactors on site). My little archeologist heart is happy 😊

Selfie with the ruins of the Amphitheater in the background. I (30s white woman, red hair, glasses) am wearing white and blue Roman garb. Behind me in the arena there are tents and yurts for the reenactors, and a large square of sand for the upcoming gladiator fights.

A friend asked #ChatGPT for recommendations on folktales where weaving and spinning plays an important role.

The #AI recommended the Ugly Duckling.
When asked why, it said "the duckling makes magical clothes for the prince." 😂

This will probably change in the future, but right now, AI is very, very bad at folklore questions.

(Last time I asked it about mythical creatures in China, and it made up an entire nonexistent chapter of Journey to the West...)

I just read Jane Yolen in one of her books refer to carrying on traditional stories as "mouth-to-ear resuscitation"... 😄

This book really sounds awesome, and I would love it if the project got funded.

Hugh Lupton is a stellar storyteller, and he is generously sharing the best of his folktale repertoire.

Obviously. I would love a subscription where I regularly receive folklore in the mail. Especially unpublished, archival, freshly collected, newly translated, or little known local folklore from around the world.
