Looks like #Microsoft appointed the new Data Protection Supervisor of the #EU.

This happened because the “left-liberal camp” did not agree on which candidate to support, if I am reading the news correctly.

I saw outgoing EDPS Wojciech Wiewiórowski at more than one @fnf meeting, and I doubt that his successor will turn up at this grassroots #privacy barcamp.

Kelber @ulrichkelber denken...

Windows 11 Installation Media Bug causes Security Update Failures. :microsoft:

Microsoft is warning of an issue when using a media support to install Windows 11 [version 24H2], that causes the operating system to not accept further security updates.

http://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24h2#issues-might-occur-with-media-which-installs-the-october-or-november-update

#microsoft #windows #update #failures #it #security #privacy #engineer #media #tech #news
"When using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates," Microsoft is warning. "This occurs only when the media is created to include the October 2024, or November 2024, security updates as part of the installation," the company also explains.

The bug does not impact security updates applied via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website and does not occur when the latest December 2024 security update is used.

Microsoft is currently working on a permanent fix and recommends that media-based Windows 11 24H2 installations use the December 2024 security update, released on December 10, to avoid encountering subsequent updating problems.

The installation media issue is added to a long string of problems that impacts 24H2, the latest major feature update for Microsoft's operating system, which was released earlier this year to offer enhanced security, usability and performance.

Microsoft claims its new Windows 11 Xbox popups aren’t ads, merely “options you can purchase”

A Lenovo laptop is open on a light brown wooden table, showcasing a webpage about Windows 10's 10th anniversary. The background subtly reveals a portion of a living room, including what seems to be a grey couch and a wooden floor. In the foreground, besides the laptop, there is also a red Nintendo-branded water bottle with a slightly worn-out label.
With Windows 11 slowly receiving more and more ads across its system, people are getting a little tired of seeing new ones pop up. Over the past few days, some users have spotted ad pop-ups advertising the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and the paid Microsoft Defender security app. Fortunately, Microsoft has cleared up this little mess by stating that these aren’t ads at all but instead “giving the people the option to purchase” a product. Phew. Well, that clears that up, doesn’t it?

This is the very best of PR technobabble. You just know if a company dresses something up like this, that they actually do feel a bit guilty about it. But it’s like a lie is to a mistruth. A lot of the problems we have today are because of propaganda being applied by corporates and governments.

So there you go, all those pop-ups on websites, and the things that YouTube interrupts your videos with, are actually just options you can purchase. I feel the Oxford Dictionary word of 2025 may be something along these lines. We just need to invent the word now.

Remember how #Skynet and #Terminators were just fine with a #nuclear devastated world? Hmmm... #BigTech is going all in on #NuclearPower as sustainability concerns around #AI grow

"#ArtificialIntelligence has driven shares of tech companies like #Microsoft (#MSFT), #Amazon (#AMZN), #Nvidia (N#VDA), and #Google (GOOG, GOOGL) to new highs this year. But the technology, which companies promise will revolutionize our lives, is driving something else just as high as stock prices: #EnergyConsumption [and #WaterConsumption].

"#AI #DataCenters use huge amounts of power and could increase energy demand by as much as 20% over the next decade, according to a Department of Energy spokesperson. Pair that with the continued growth of the broader cloud computing market, and you’ve got an energy squeeze.

"But Big Tech has also set ambitious sustainability goals focused on the use of low-carbon and zero-carbon sources to reduce its impact on climate change. While renewable energy like solar and wind are certainly part of that equation, tech companies need uninterruptible power sources. And for that, they’re leaning into #NuclearPower.

"Tech giants aren’t just planning to hook into existing plants, either. They’re working with energy companies to bring mothballed facilities like Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island back online and looking to build small modular reactors (#SMRs) that take up less space than traditional plants and, the hope is, are cheaper to construct.

"But there are still plenty of questions as to whether these investments in nuclear energy will ever pan out, not to mention how long it will take to build any new reactors."

"Microsoft’s Recall feature recently made its way back to Windows Insiders after having been pulled from test builds back in June, due to security and privacy concerns. The new version of Recall encrypts the screens it captures and, by default, it has a “Filter sensitive information,” setting enabled, which is supposed to prevent it from recording any app or website that is showing credit card numbers, social security numbers, or other important financial / personal info. In my tests, however, this filter only worked in some situations (on two e-commerce sites), leaving a gaping hole in the protection it promises.

When I entered a credit card number and a random username / password into a Windows Notepad window, Recall captured it, despite the fact that I had text such as “Capital One Visa” right next to the numbers. Similarly, when I filled out a loan application PDF in Microsoft Edge, entering a social security number, name and DOB, Recall captured that. Note that all info in these screenshots is made up, but I also tested with an actual credit card number of mine and the results were the same."

Microsoft holds last Patch of the Year with 72 Gifts for Admins.

Microsoft resolved 72 vulnerabilities in a variety of its products, including a zero-day [CVE-2024-49138 (CVSS score: 7.8)] that’s been exploited by attackers in the wild to execute code with higher privileges, and 16 critical vulnerabilities (all of which are remote code execution flaws).

https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-guide/releaseNote/2024-Dec

#microsoft #windows #update #it #security #privacy #engineer #media #tech #news
It's worth noting that CVE-2024-49138 is the fifth actively exploited CLFS privilege escalation flaw since 2022 after CVE-2022-24521, CVE-2022-37969, CVE-2023-23376 and CVE-2023-28252 (CVSS scores: 7.8). It's also the ninth vulnerability in the same component to be patched this year.

The fact that CLFS has become an attractive attack pathway for malicious actors has not gone unnoticed by Microsoft, which said it's working to add a new verification step when parsing such log files.

The number of fixed bugs in each vulnerability category is listed below:

• 27 Elevation of Privilege Vulnerabilities
• 30 Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities
• 7 Information Disclosure Vulnerabilities
• 5 Denial of Service Vulnerabilities
• 1 Spoofing Vulnerabilities
[This count does not include two Edge flaws that were previously fixed on December 5 and 6th.]

"Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an “opt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out.

If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re going to want to turn this feature off immediately.

I won’t beat around the bush. Microsoft Office doesn’t make it easy to opt out of this new AI privacy agreement, as the feature is hidden through a series of popup menus in your settings:

On a Windows computer, follow these steps to turn off “Connected Experiences”: File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Optional Connected Experiences > Uncheck box: “Turn on optional connected experiences”"

I used to trust #Microsoft more than other #bigtech platforms, mostly because I used #Excel a lot in my work.

I switched from #Chrome to #EdgeBrowser a long time ago for work (and use #Vivaldi for private stuff).

However I just had to set up my work profile in Edge again today, and Microsoft's #consent for #tracking has really gone to shit.

Look what they consider to now be 'Always Active' (i.e. not requiring consent):
