I realise the latest edition of #weekendSewingClub didn’t get as far as any actual #sewing, so here, for your amusement, is a random picture of an earlier project that I took purely for my own gratification. This is a mitred joint between the hem and front facing of a wrap skirt, since obscured by the lining, so nobody but me will ever see the thing again, but I like to know that it’s neat. #tailoring #maker
The inside, bottom front corner of a wrap skirt. It has a hem and facing each 3.5 cm deep, and neatly finished on the raw edges by close-spaced overlocker stitching. The corner, slightly more obtuse than right angled (maybe 95°) is damned nearly perfectly mitred, so the overlocked edges meet dead on. It’s all very geometrically satisfying. Held in place for stitching with a single pin near the corner.

🧶🧶🧶 New WIP!! Just started making the BonBon mitts now for my old roommate here at the nursing home. She wants them in white just like the pattern shows.

Cute pattern, and free! Using gifted yarn, not sure from who. No belly band, but feels like maybe a wool-synthetic blend...?

So happy to have something fresh to work on, while I also knit the final sleeve on Mom's sweater. Onward!

#WeekendSewingClub latest challenge: to shamelessly plagiarise this Alexander McQueen patchwork jacket.

I found a damned-near perfect dupe in a 2023 Burda magazine, and a truly delicious fabric pairing.

First task is to bisect the jacket pattern at the waist (and get it level all the way round!) and then swing the lower front edge out a wee bit.

#sewing #tailoring #maker
Woman wearing black/white checked suit, cropped to focus on the jacket. It is single breasted with just one button at the waist, and long, peaked lapels. There’s a horizontal seam at the waist. Above, the jacket is cut from a prince of wales check. Below the waist it’s a simple houndstooth check. Model is wearing matching houndstooth trousers.
Bale of wool fabric. On top is houndstooth check in black and white, with a subtle red overcheck. Below is Straight houndstooth. Both have the same slightly hazy, tweedy softness to the pattern. They feel as good as they look: dense and substantial jacket-weight.
Pattern line drawing for a jacket very similar to the one described in the first picture. The main difference is that it is indicating single pieces top-to-bottom, without the waist seam.

Back to the Future of Texting: SMS on a Panasonic Typewriter.

The story of this texting typewriter is one that beautifully blends nostalgia and modern technology. [Sam], an engineering teacher, transformed a Panasonic T36 typewriter into a device that can receive SMS messages, print them out and even display the sender’s name & timestamp.

For enthusiasts of retro gadgets, this creation bridges the gap between analog charm and digital convenience. Beyond receiving messages, [Sam] is working on features like replying to texts directly from the typewriter. For those still familiar with the art form of typing on a typewriter.

What makes Sam’s hack particularly exciting is its adaptability. By effectively replacing the original keyboard with an ESP32 microcontroller, he designed the setup to work with almost any electric typewriter. The project involves I2C communication, multiplexer circuits and SMS management via Twilio. The paper feed uses an “infinite” roll of typing paper — something Sam humorously notes as outlasting magnetic tape for storage longevity.

So my PCB's are already here from JLCPCB. That was fast...
They are kinda smaller than I expected...
But it should work.
Might have to use AAA batteries instead of AA's...
This should be cool.

I'm signed up for a few maker classes at the makerspace at Sac City College.
This was my first week and I'm somewhat satisfied with this...
I might make this a tradition of going to this college for the winters...
I picked winter because I thought it'd be icky outside anyways...
I'll have access to the makerspace so why not and I want to get some chemistry classes in anyways.
If only the winter semester started in December then id maybe have April which is a nice time.

So I got to do measurements in my room so I can start designing in there...
Then I want to see about making a big PVC and plastic structure next to the house....
That could be nice.

Remember how I was bitching about not being able to find a guide for this? Well, I made one. Trying to be part of the solution overhere 😁

Moin #PhysikEdu,

I think i just finished designing the second and final PCB for this thing...
I'm gonna see about doing a check of the sensitive circuitry, and exporting it and having it manufactured!
Then I gotta order the components and do that and program it and somewhere in there do the CAD for the encasing...

🧶🧶🧶 Swatching! Why?

For my elderly roommate here at the nursing home, who spends most of her time curled up in a ball under blankets, isolated.

I offered to knit her slippers. These will be the Nordic Slippers, a simple pattern with lace detail at the ankle. Yellow is her fave color, and I sourced this gorgeous yarn in stash. No band, but it feels like wool - very expensive wool! Deserving!

#WeekendSewingClub final update. Still a bit of finishing to be done on the fly opening, but I’m ready for an evening off! I’m pretty satisfied with how these turned out. I love a woven selvedge, so I was pleased to think of keeping it visible on the inside waistband. And I’m definitely more of a shorts-suit person than anything more grown-up, so Will actually wear this lot.

It’s the oversized blazer, done except for the front fastening. I just need to summon the energy to go out and find a suitable button.

Super pleased with this as my first start-to-finish garment of 2024, and an eminently wearable one.

Me wearing the (very nearly finished) houndstooth tweed coat. It’s an oversized blazer with big, patch pockets.
The houndstooth coat (grey and dark navy check) hanging up. It doesn’t have a fastening, yet, at the front. It doesn’t exactly need one, being so generously sized it hangs closed of its own accord.
