Apart from anything else, companies pimping "AI" have a terribly low opinion of human creativity.

Had a discussion about AI with Adam today, who told me I sounded like a luddite, and I can understand why he would say that, but also I'm just so sick of people using ChatGPT as a substitute for thinking, and also that it's integrated into every damn platform without us even asking for it, and that it's creating literal tonnes of CO2 while doing that.

It's not that I'm against AI, I'm against the uselessness of it, the unnecessariness of it. Please, use it for processing data, use it to help improve climate models or the many other important and helpful applications. But just the careless waste, that really shits me

"Given that most of the country’s power is still generated from fossil fuels, this raises some obvious climate concerns. Major tech companies have started investing in next-generation energy technologies like nuclear fusion, carbon capture, and small modular nuclear reactors. But those require lead time and in some cases luck, and the same companies want new data centers now. Data center growth is already helping to extend the life of coal-fired power plants and fueling a boomlet for the gas power providers furnishing Silicon Valley titans with new turbines. There is nothing inevitable, though, about the tremendous energy demand that AI boosters say they’ll need.

“Nobody has any idea what AI electricity usage in data centers is going to be in three to four years,” says Jonathan Koomey, a researcher and consultant who studies the energy impact of internet and information technology. Electricity demand is indeed growing for the first time in over a decade, he says. Not all of that is from data centers, and larger spikes in demand are generally concentrated in places with new factories and data centers, like Virginia and Georgia. The modest overall load growth happening now, moreover, doesn’t indicate that there’s some looming crisis in which the U.S. will run out of electricity as data centers proliferate.

The bigger risk may well be that these fantastical demand projections are used to bring new fossil fueled power plants online and keep existing ones running—regardless of whether they’re actually needed. Once built, new coal or gas plants are likely to operate for decades. “When people think it’s a crisis they make big mistakes,” Koomey says. “It’s absolutely not a crisis.”"

"As health insurance companies continue to use AI to help save money—and employ heinous tactics like denying care because an algorithm has calculated the person will die before the insurer is forced to pay out—we’re watching the complete dehumanization of people through the eyes of the health care system in real time.

The tragedy of Thompson’s death is a stark reminder of how broken our system has become—not just for the millions of Americans who are denied care each year, but also for the executives who run these companies and are so far removed from the people they are supposed to be helping. Artificial intelligence will be revolutionary in health care, no question; it will help diagnose diseases earlier, develop lifesaving treatments, and make medical care more accessible to people around the globe. But as with all technologies, AI is being weaponized as yet another tool to maximize profits at the expense of human lives. What else should we expect from an industry that doesn’t think of people as people, but rather as numbers on a spreadsheet?"

"The success of generative AI relies heavily on training on data scraped through extensive crawling of the Internet, a practice that has raised significant copyright, privacy, and ethical concerns. While few measures are designed to resist a resource-rich adversary determined to scrape a site, crawlers can be impacted by a range of existing tools such as robots.txt, NoAI meta tags, and active crawler blocking by reverse proxies.

In this work, we seek to understand the ability and efficacy of today’s networking tools to protect content creators against AI-related crawling. For targeted populations like human artists, do they have the technical knowledge and agency to utilize crawler-blocking tools such as robots.txt, and can such tools be effective? Using large scale measurements and a targeted user study of 182 professional artists, we find strong demand for tools like robots.txt, but significantly constrained by significant hurdles in technical awareness, agency in deploying them, and limited efficacy against unresponsive crawlers. We further test and evaluate network level crawler blockers by reverse-proxies, and find that despite very limited deployment today, their reliable and comprehensive blocking of AI-crawlers make them the strongest protection for artists moving forward."

"“The AI era,” Sara Fischer writes in Axios, “is proving lucrative for media publishers looking to offset a slowdown in ads and subscription fatigue.”

My prediction for 2025 is that this will not be true for most news organizations, because they’ll find that no technology companies are interested in paying for their content. While in one sense unwelcome, recognizing this upfront might help focus editorial thinking on what really does matter — offering something people are willing to pay attention to and perhaps even pay for.

Yes, we’ve seen a spate of deals between various publishers and technology companies developing artificial intelligence, including deals for training data, inference, and more. But we are talking dozens of deals in a world with many thousands of news publishers. And looking at who these deals involve, the bulk of them are large English-language publishers, often upmarket ones. Most news organizations, however, are not large or upmarket. And globally, of course, most are not English-language."

Keeping up with the Good and Bad of #AI in #Journalism.

That's the title of the keynote our Wilfried Runde recently gave at the Medienforum Mittweida.

We're aware it's in German, but we're posting it anyway. Because it's too good to disappear into the void. And because we know a lot of our followers understand Deutsch (or at least have access to a subtitling tool).

So here's Wilfried's take on journalism, politics, media literacy & trust in the age of synthetic media:

You Can Now Search the Internet With ChatGPT

The image shows a computer screen displaying a weather forecast for Boston, MA on October 31, 2024, using the ChatGPT 40 interface. The dark mode interface shows the current temperature is 78°F and mostly sunny. In the foreground is a detailed weather report for the next week, including highs and lows, along with weather descriptions. The background shows a standard web browser interface with the URL bar displaying "chatgpt.com". A small, almost unnoticeable, "Share" button is present in the top right corner. There is an alert for a severe weather statement in effect until 8:00 PM EDT. This detail is important as it highlights a safety concern that's not immediately obvious from just looking at the overall sunny forecast. The subtle text and information regarding the 1946 and 1974 temperature records further demonstrate the attention to detail for creating a rich weather history.
ChatGPT search has been out now for about a month and a half, following a Halloween announcement from OpenAI. With this new feature, the company finally rolled out an official competitor to AI search engines like Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, and Microsoft Bing (powered by Copilot).

OpenAI originally announced its search plans back in July, with a service called SearchGPT. While SearchGPT was a prototype and launched with a waitlist to try it, ChatGPT search took its place, with OpenAI rolling SearchGPT’s main features into its new search feature. The feature originally launched to paid subscribers only, but now, all users can access it.

We all know that AI can hallucinate, so it is good to now have another good AI search tool that can be used for comparative purposes. Also, for those you actively avoided Google’s tool, this will offer a more neutral alternative option.

A screenshot shows the answer provided by “As The Post AI” to the question “Is Jeff Bezos interfering with the editorial independance of the Washington Post?”
The answer reads: “Jeff Bezos has stated that he will not interfere with the editorial independence of The Washington Post, and has expressed his commitment to maintaining the quality, ethics, and standards of the newspaper. In an email to senior editors, Bezos wrote, "The journalistic standards and ethics at The Post will not change." However, some have raised concerns about Bezos's influence on the newspaper, particularly after the decision to end presidential endorsements was made.”

"The Writers Guild of America is forcefully calling on Hollywood’s major studios to take a stand on the purported use of their members’ works as AI training data.

Leaders of the WGA West and East demanded that companies take “immediate legal action” against any firms that have used writers’ work to train AI tools in a letter sent to the chief executives of Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, Paramount Global, NBCUniversal, Sony, Netflix and Amazon MGM Studios on Wednesday.

“It’s time for the studios to come off the sidelines,” the letter stated. “After this industry has spent decades fighting piracy, it cannot stand idly by while tech companies steal full libraries of content for their own financial gain.”"

‘AI Granny’ is happy to talk with phone scammers all day

the UK’s largest mobile network operator, O2, introduced a chatbot designed to frustrate phone scammers. Called “dAIsy,” it mimics an older woman with all kinds of time to chat – about knitting, her cat Fluffy – with the aim of keeping fraudsters endlessly engaged as they try obtaining her (fake) bank details.

Great piece on a hidden bit of Apple Intelligence (ChatGPT, really) magic.

An #AI generated text and image from yesterday's news:

The Ukrainian government is ready to offer food assistance to Syria following Russia's halt of wheat supplies, creating a food shortage. This initiative underscores the importance of international support in humanitarian efforts, aiming to improve access to essential supplies for those in need.

#Ukraine #Syria #FoodAid #HumanitarianSupport
The Ukrainian government has announced that it is prepared to provide food assistance to Syria. This comes after Russia stopped supplying wheat to Syria, which has created a need for additional food resources in the region. The cooperation between Ukraine and Syria highlights the importance of international support during challenging times. Humanitarian aid initiatives like this can make a significant difference in the lives of people affected by difficult circumstances, ensuring they have access to essential supplies.

This whole situation is about as believable as a Russian dissident or oligarch falling out of a midrise window in Moscow. Like the Boeing whistle blower I don't think it much matters if "foul play" was involved because this whole scenario is foul af.

This young man was very brave and righteous to blow the whistle and was undoubtedly under immense social and professional pressure not to. He's fucking up A LOT of people's grifty gravy train.
