Sez Us Is A New Social Media App Punishes Users for Rage-Baiting

Comparison of social media platforms: Twitter's rules by Elon Musk vs. Sez Us, which adapts to user behavior for trust and influence.
“If there is one certainty of social media in 2025, it’s this: Rage clicks rule. Hyperbole, hate, brash deception—it’s all par for the course—and often rewarded with virality. On Sez Us, users who are intentionally inflammatory may score lower than those who gain influence through respectful dialog.”

I must say I do love this concept. The app is trying to build up trust, civility, transparency, and reputation. Because of this, I’m going to give it a try.

My early impressions are I do like having a 300 character post title and 15,000 characters available for the body text. An interesting point too, is you can link to X (yes I know…) as well as Bluesky, and set toggles on the post to send to those networks at the same time.

But don’t worry, the feed view only shows a few lines from the post, so the scrolling is quite easy.

Their business model says that Sez Us is built on advertisers working directly with creators and investing in great content. There is nothing I could see about their technology, but it appears to be a centralised platform. There are also mobile apps I see available.

See https://www.wired.com/story/this-platform-wants-to-return-civil-discourse-to-social-media-by-scoring-users/ and you can find Sez Us at https://sez.us/category/uncategorized/feed

Gizmodo: Reddit Accused of Cracking Down on Luigi Mangione Content. “Slate recently noted that some forums on Reddit had been getting censored for their discussion of the accused killer. A moderator for one long-running subreddit, /r/popculture, was suspended by the platform after failing to quell the ongoing discussion of Mangione. The action followed an unusual warning from the site’s […]

Pinksky is a photo client for Bluesky (iOS and Android)

A grid of diverse landscape images showcasing waterfalls, sunsets, mountains, and forests, with a search bar at the top labeled 'Landscape'.
Flashes has just launched as an excellent Instagram alternative for Bluesky recently, but it is iOS only, which leaves the vast majority of the world out in the cold. The Fediverse also has Pixelfed as a similar alternative to Instagram, but for the Fediverse.

From what I can see of Pinksky, this app is maybe the closest then that Android users have to an Instagram alternative on Bluesky.

The app subtly puts the photo before any post text, and there is also an option to filter on photo posts only. The two images below show the different ways that the Bluesky and the Pinksky apps show the same post.

Pinksky convertedPinksky app showing photo first
Bluesky convertedBluesky app with post text defaulting to above the photo

What also makes the Pinksky app quite useful for finding images is the way it presents the Search screen. Below, I entered the search term “Landscape” and it defaults to Top posts, but you can change that to Recent Posts.

PinkskySearch convertedPinksy Search screen

Although you can put the search term “reels” in, and view the results in a grid layout, it would be great if Pinksky rather added a new filter to their main feed view, which could filter just on reels that can be scrolled up the screen.

The link below will take you to the Pinksky site, which will display on a desktop or mobile app. But you can also opt to install their app from the two mobile app stores. It looks like it is a web app implementation, which is why it is cross-platform compatible.

"The account by Gallagher makes explicit something there have been hints of for some time. Israeli officials and lobbyists told everyone that would listen in Washington that TikTok’s algorithm fueled American youth opposition to the Israel-Hamas war.

As I reported last year, a State Department source told me that a high-ranking Israeli diplomat was ranting about the supposed malign role of some Chinese-manufactured algorithm, purposely dismissive of the reality that the college protesters’ outrage was sincere, that it was about Israel’s military conduct in Gaza and not some “foreign malign influence” campaign hatched in Beijing.

NPR at about the same time reported on a memo written by Israel Foreign Ministry Deputy Director General Emmanuel Nahshon, which blamed TikTok’s algorithm for “turning young people against Israel.”

I’ve obtained a similar memo detailing the incident. The memo, produced by the State Department for its Near East Affairs diplomats, describes how Nahshon, the Israeli official, blamed youth opposition to the war in Gaza on the TikTok algorithm. Nahshon also ignored warnings from the Biden administration’s Assistant Secretary for Global Public Affairs, Bill Russo, “oblivious” to the “possibility generational damage to their reputation” they were facing internationally."

Using this old instance again has refreshed my memory about Akkoma. I like Akkoma and wish it were used more. The only thing I’m missing is seeing edited posts: if a user edits a post, I’ll continue to see the original one here.

Remembering Usenet — The OG Social Network that Existed Even Before the World Wide Web

Screenshot of the Pan application for Usenet. It shows a list of groups on the left, with various topic subjects in a selected group, to the right. The user has right-clicked ona group, and a popup menu shows an option selected to get new group headers and bodies.
Before Reddit, before GitHub, and even before the World Wide Web went online, there was Usenet.

This decentralized network of discussion groups was a main line of communication of the early internet — ideas were exchanged, debates raged, research conducted, and friendships formed.

Usenet is one of the oldest computer network communications systems still in widespread use. It went online in 1980, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University.

Linux was officially announced on a Usenet newsgroup.

Usenet’s use may have declined over the years, but it is still quite active. It is good to see that although the masses may often only know about Reddit, Facebook, etc, there are many of the older social networks still running, with thousands of daily users. Another such example is IRC (I post to my own IRC group daily).

Despite new social networks, there is still plenty of space and use on the older networks. Not everyone just flocks to the newer, flashy websites. I suppose it also means that the users on Usenet and IRC are also likely to have a slightly different focus on how they communicate. I also doubt you’ll find many Gen Z etc users on those older networks.

Whilst the original Usenet is paid access, If you want to ‘lurk’ on Usenet groups you can also try out the free Eternal September service. I use a client app called Pan to read Usenet groups.

One of the human freedoms is the ability to choose with whom to speak and engage. The Fediverse allows you to have your own space, or a shared space with like-minded people. It lets you choose who you want to interact with and who to avoid.
True free communication can only be in your own hands and federated.

As @jomc discusses in this article, Bluesky is not decentralized (at least not yet).

Mastodon is today.

That is why I have been more focused on things there where I have more control of my data, social graph and it is more resistant to single-owner problems.
