"You must not use device fingerprints or locally shared objects (e.g., Flash cookies, Browser Helper Objects, HTML5 local storage) other than HTTP cookies, or user-resettable mobile device identifiers designed for use in advertising, in connection with Google's platform products. This does not limit the use of IP address for the detection of fraud."

Yes Google. The results WERE quite 'useful' in ways you'll never understand 😎

For the record #Google Lens DOES NOT IDENTIFY this EXPLOSIVE device, which appears to be either a re-purposed #landmine or some sort of fragmentation bomb. Also results without explosive device prompt. Lastly using "Land Mine". #Censorship @palestine @israel #IDF #Genocide #Palestinians #Gaza #GoogleLens #MemoryHole
Google Lens Highlighted explosive devices, being handled by idf nazi who is not highlighted. Just devices.

Since we all have to listen to the constant bitching about AI and the enshittificaton of search engines, I don't want to see one more person being castigated for asking a question on social media that could have been answered with a cursory search.

That was shitty, asshole behavior to begin with and now it can't even be justified by being technically correct.

Update: I found an affordable Chromebook that should do the job for now, and I'm gonna take my Mac back home and wipe the entire thing and reinstall the OS. She doesn't have anything of substance that she needs to save to the Cloud, but I'm going to double check her documents etc. before I do that.

Thanks everybody for your advice! We'll see how this saga continues...

I don't have a ton of followers on this account, so I would love if people would boost this for reach :

I need #tech advice from #computer people who also have #aging parents.

I think it's time for me to replace my mom's laptop with something that she can't kill. Or, if she kills it, something I can replace each time for less than $500.

I'm wondering if a netbook type of device would work? I have no idea what's available in that realm anymore.

I am loathe to get her something in the #Google 'verse because fuck Google. And boy howdy do I *not* want to go back into #Windows with her. That is my least favorite realm in which to play tech support.

However, if there is something out there that would suit her needs and not give me as many headaches, and it happens to be Google or Microsoft, and I can get it for less than $500, I will consider it.

Right now, she has *my* 2020 M1 #MacBook Air, because she killed *her* 2020 M1 MacBook Air with viruses -- and by spilling coffee on it.

It is still sitting on my workbench because no tech guys in town would touch it. All of them said that she needed to buy a new machine.

I loaned her my machine knowing full well that eventually, she would message me to let me know that it had "all these viruses!" on it.

That day was today.

I have no goddamn idea where she goes online to pick this stuff up, but the trashy email lists she's addicted to and Facebook are the two main suspects.

So my main question is: is there a senior-proof, laptop-style machine that I could get for her that would be more of a walled garden and might cause me fewer headaches so I can stop her ruining these expensive #Apple machines?

A side question would be: if we keep her in the Appleverse, is there a way I can spy on her? Is there something that I can install so I can see remotely what she's doing? I am the Admin on this machine and I believe she just has regular user privileges.

I know that's a radical invasion of privacy, even if I get her permission, but if she's going to keep ruining expensive laptops, I need to know where she's going and how she's messing them up. It would rock to be able to log into them remotely to try to fix them. (Is that even a thing?)

The only advantage to her having a Mac is I know them the best, and it does play nice with her phone. Also I can see all of her devices on Find My. But as she never travels with her laptop, I don't think she needs an Apple laptop anymore.

My sister and I got her a 10th generation iPad that works with a Bluetooth keyboard for her birthday last October. I was hoping that she would switch some of her behaviors over to that, because I can keep it more locked down. But nope.

I'm really at a loss for how to proceed as she ages. She considers herself tech savvy, and I don't want to have to keep gently shaming her for going to these fucking awful sites and picking up computer diseases.

She hates using her iPhone (13 Pro) for Facebook, email, or banking. I'm pretty sure that banking on a laptop with viruses on it is how she got scammed last year, prior to me switching out her machine. 😬

I appreciate advice from people who have dealt with this with aging relatives. Thanks for reading.

Big Tech is digital colonialism, siphoning creativity and exploiting consumers for profit while deepening inequality. These corporations treat individuals as mere resources in their relentless pursuit of profit.

When will you rise up against their exploitation? Just look at the damage they cause!

Delete your #Facebook and go join #Friendica instead. Trust me you'll have a better time, and still enjoy the same features for the most part.

Delete your #Instagram and go join #Pixelfed. It has a lot of the same features and it is free, doesn't have ads, and isn't run by a corporation.

Delete your #Threads, #Bluesky, or #Twitter account, and go join #Mastodon. Trust me you won't miss anything from them since Mastodon is a lot like them without the ads, or the corporate shittyness.

Go try out #LoopsVideo instead of #TikTok. It is shaping up to be a great alternative to TikTok.

Go try out #PeerTube it is a lot like #YouTube, and it doesn't have ads, nor any of the crap that comes from being owned by #Google.

Go try out #OwnCast it is a lot like #Twitch, but it is more free and doesn't have ads ruining the live streams.

Here's another #Google AI Overview Lie just emailed to me, by someone concerned that it could have medical implications to a confused user. I agree. This is insanity.

Billions spent on AI, and this is the sort of garbage we get! #Google

EU 'Strongly Condemns' Attack At Turkey Defence Firm

Officially, the DefenseTech Summit was meant to showcase “Israel’s cutting edge technologies and strategies for addressing global security.” But the event felt more like a celebration of a new and unrestrained era of techno-militarization inaugurated by Donald Trump’s reelection.

16 Chrome Extensions attacked in Large-Scale Credential Theft Scheme.

A attack campaign has compromised at least 16 Chrome browser extensions, exposing over 600k users to data & credential theft. This targeted extension publishers through phishing emails that mimicked official communications from the Chrome Web Store.

https://www.cyberhaven.com/blog/cyberhavens-chrome-extension-security-incident-and-what-were-doing-about-it

Cyberhaven, a IT-security firm specializing in data loss prevention, was among the impacted firms and the first to publicly disclose its compromise. The attack occurred on December 24 and involved phishing a company employee to gain access to their Chrome Web Store admin credentials.

According to Cyberhaven, the attackers compromised the “single admin account for the Google Chrome Store” and managed to publish a malicious update to their popular Chrome extension. This update, deployed on Christmas Day, was designed to steal sensitive user data, including passwords, session tokens, Facebook account credentials and cookies.

The malicious extension, version 24.10.4, remained active for over 31 hours before being detected and removed from the Chrome Web Store. “Our security team detected this compromise at 11:54 PM UTC on December 25 and removed the malicious package within 60 minutes,” the company’s disclosure read.

Cyberhaven immediately released a legitimate update (version 24.10.5), hired Mandiant to develop an incident response plan and also notified federal law enforcement agencies for investigation. The company has confirmed that its systems, including CI/CD processes and code signing keys, were not compromised.

“Supercomputer Talks between Israel, Amazon, and Google Collapse – What It Means for Palestine”

by Palestine Chronicle Staff

“Negotiations between Israel’s Innovation Authority and tech giants Amazon and Google have faltered, raising concerns over the use of advanced computing technologies to further entrench the Israeli occupation of Palestine.”:
