Louisiana reports a presumptive case of #H5N1 #birdflu in a person who had exposure to sick & dead birds suspected of having been infected. The person is in hospital.
Samples en route to #CDC for confirmatory testing.
California reported 2 more cases today. National total this year 60, maybe 61.

A single Mutation could bring Bird Flu a critical Step closer to a New Pandemic.

With the H5N1 bird flu virus spreading quickly across animals in the US, experts are on high alert for signs of human-to-human transmission. Such a jump could become far easier with just a single mutation, according to new research.

The virus has a fatality rate of 50 percent in humans, so animal infections need to be carefully monitored and tightly controlled to stop the spreading strain of H5N1 adapting into something that one person can give directly to another.

"Our experiments revealed that the Q226L mutation could significantly increase the virus ability to target and attach to human-type receptors," says biochemist James Paulson. "This mutation gives the virus a foothold on human cells that it didn't have before, which is why this finding is a red flag for possible adaptation to people."

<Receptor binding site of the A/Texas/37/2024 hemagglutinin Leu226 mutant (yellow) in complex with the human receptor analog LSTc (cyan).>

While several of these morphing mutations are usually needed to put humans in danger from avian influenza, this time the transformation process could be quicker, scientists from the Scripps Research Institute in California found.

"The findings demonstrate how easily this virus could evolve to recognize human-type receptors," says infectious disease scientist Ting-Hui Lin, first author of the new study.

The researchers also investigated the H5N1 2.3.4.4b strain of the virus found in recent human infections, finding that a single amino acid mutation in a key protein would be enough to switch the virus target from avian-type receptors to human-type receptors.

Source of exposure appears unclear. The @CDCgov also has nothing to report. Crickets. 🦗 The investigation has been under way for a week.

FINALLY! The U.S. issued a federal order on Friday mandating that the national milk supply be tested for bird flu.Testing will involve monthly or weekly sample collection from bulk milk tanks & dairy processors in 6 states, initially. "The pace of testing will depend on whether the virus is detected in initial sampling," said Sifford, USDA's chief veterinarian.

Of the 58 people in the U.S. who have been infected by the H5N1 bird flu virus this year, all but two of them had contact with cows or chickens, two species in which the virus is circulating. Scientists are finding that reassuring, but a concerning new study says the strain is only one mutation away from being able to bind more easily to human cells. @time has more.

We gotta stick together and prepare for the worst. I can't see the future, but I can see the clues.

#Birdflu takes no holiday breaks: #USDA posted 13 new #H5N1 infected herds from California today, bringing the state's total to 474 & the cumulative national total to 688 herds in 15 states.

A detailed investigation of the people and domestic animals that the B.C. teen with avian flu had contact with has not revealed a clear source of exposure. 34 health care workers, 16 close contacts & 25 animals, including birds, rodents, dogs, cats, and reptiles, all tested negative for the virus. The public health investigation is closed for now. The teen remains in critical condition, but has shown some signs of improvement, recently.

More than 50 people in seven U.S. states have had confirmed cases of a human bird flu variant, concerning health experts that another pandemic could be possible. This week, a child in California with no known contact with infected animals came down with the virus. CBSNews@flipboard.com medical contributor Dr. Céline Gounde explains why this is a worrying development and answers other questions about bird flu.

The child was in daycare with mild symptoms before the illness was reported. However, “the test showed a low level detection of the virus, indicating the child was not likely infectious to others.”

Time is of the essence: #effectiveness of dairy #farm #control of #H5N1 is limited by fast spread

Source: BioRxIV, https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.11.15.623774v1?rss=1

Abstract
The emergence and growth of highly pathogenic avian influenza(HPAI) A(H5N1) in dairy cows poses a growing threat for both the food supply and onward zoonosis to humans. Despite ongoing surveillance and control measures recommended by animal and public health authorities to limit viral spread, new herds continue to report infections. We show here that the continued spread between farms could be explained by the rapid pace of pathogen spread reported within farms, which greatly limits the potential effectiveness of these recommendations. Under reasonable surveillance strategies, we show that the time farms have to mobilize interventions is extremely limited, as few as a couple days and typically less than a week. Our findings suggest that passive surveillance measures, such as detection of H5N1 via weekly bulk milk testing, comes too late such that most infections have already occurred. For current interventions to be valuable, more sensitive and extensive surveillance is needed and an emphasis should be placed on biosecurity practices rather than reactive practices.

Oregon confirmed its 1st human case of bird flu, bringing the national total no of reported cases to 52.

The affected individual experienced a mild illness and has recovered, per officials. The individual is linked to a commercial poultry operation in Clackamas County, where the virus has been confirmed in 150K birds.

It’s not clear how he/she contracted it. Canada has had no cases reported in dairy cattle, but wild birds have tested positive.

Three dozen contacts of the patient have all tested negative.

We need to pray for this teen and we need to get a better handle on this uncontrolled outbreak of H5N1 virus on U.S farms.
