I’m looking for a new option for a phone. No #iPhone no #samsung.

I’m thinking the librem5, but not sure. Are there any good non mainstream phones that have extended security updates and are overall decent?

Would love boosts and recommendations on new phones.

A couple moon pics I took from my apartment last night. These were taken on my #iphone 16 pro’s 5x lens looking through a 7x binocular. No editing and looking pretty good I think :)

A pitch black photo, except for the moon in the center. It is a few days after the full moon, so it has begun to wane a bit. The details of the moons surface are visible, showing craters and lines. It’s a tad blurry, and not the most detailed image out there, but it still looks great.

It’s a tad blurry and much darker than the other image. However, there is more detail visible because the brightness is lower.

"Foxconn is halting new work rotations for its Chinese employees at its Apple iPhone factories in India, and sending Taiwanese workers instead, according to five people familiar with Foxconn’s operations in India. Shipments of specialized manufacturing equipment meant for India have also been held up in China, the sources told Rest of World.

The development is likely to disrupt iPhone assembly lines in the Foxconn factories in the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, which produce iPhones as part of Apple’s efforts to diversify production away from China. Some of the sources said the Chinese government is responsible for the suspensions of worker deployments and equipment exports.

“Currently, the equipment and manpower are not allowed to go over [to India],” one of the sources told Rest of World. “And India doesn’t have the technology to produce the equipment.”

"Of course, this user never requested that my on-device experiences be "enriched" by phoning home to Cupertino. This choice was made by Apple, silently, without my consent.

From my own perspective, computing privacy is simple: if something happens entirely on my computer, then it's private, whereas if my computer sends data to the manufacturer of the computer, then it's not private, or at least not entirely private. Thus, the only way to guarantee computing privacy is to not send data off the device.

I don't understand most of the technical details of Apple's blog post. I have no way to personally evaluate the soundness of Apple's implementation of Enhanced Visual Search. One thing I do know, however, is that Apple computers are constantly full of privacy and security vulnerabilities, as proved by Apple's own security release notes. You don't even have to hypothesize lies, conspiracies, or malicious intentions on the part of Apple to be suspicious of their privacy claims. A software bug would be sufficient to make users vulnerable, and Apple can't guarantee that their software includes no bugs. (To the contrary, Apple's QA nowadays is atrocious.)

It ought to be up to the individual user to decide their own tolerance for the risk of privacy violations. In this specific case, I have no tolerance for risk, because I simply have no interest in the Enhanced Visual Search feature, even if it happened to work flawlessly. There's no benefit to outweigh the risk. By enabling the "feature" without asking, Apple disrespects users and their preferences. I never wanted my iPhone to phone home to Apple.

Remember this advertisement? "What happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone.""

A new Phone Scanner that detects Spyware has already found 7 Pegasus Infections.

[Journalists, human rights defenders, lawmakers and political officials are frequent targets of state surveillance.]

The mobile device security firm iVerify has been offering a tool that makes spyware scanning accessible to anyone.

Of 2,500 device scans that the company's customers elected to submit for inspection, seven revealed infections by the notorious NSO Group malware known as Pegasus.

In recent years, commercial spyware has been deployed by more actors against a wider range of victims, but the prevailing narrative has still been that the malware is used in targeted attacks against an extremely small number of people. At the same time, though, it has been difficult to check devices for infection, leading individuals to navigate an ad hoc array of academic institutions and NGOs that have been on the front lines of developing forensic techniques to detect mobile spyware. Last week, the mobile device security firm iVerify is publishing findings from a spyware detection feature it launched in May.

The company's “Mobile Threat Hunting” feature uses a combination of malware signature-based detection, heuristics & machine learning to look for anomalies in iOS and Android device activity or telltale signs of spyware infection. For paying iVerify customers, the tool regularly checks devices for potential compromise. But the company also offers a free version of the feature for anyone who downloads the iVerify Basics app for $1. These users can walk through steps to generate and send a special diagnostic utility file to iVerify and receive analysis within hours. Free users can use the tool once a month.

"Security firm iVerify said a leader of a big company was among several individuals whose iPhones were recently targeted with the Pegasus spyware.

While journalists, human rights defenders, lawmakers, and political officials are frequent targets of state surveillance, reports of spyware compromising the phones of business leaders are rare, but not unheard of. The findings come as a fresh warning that spyware typically used by governments under the guise of preventing serious crime and terrorism can also be misused for commercial espionage.

In a call with TechCrunch this week, iVerify chief executive Rocky Cole declined to name who was targeted, but said that the spyware targeted a business “that you’ve heard about.” Cole, a former analyst at the National Security Agency, said the business leader, who iVerify is in contact with, was “completely surprised” by the attempt to compromise their phone."
