"The people stand within the ruins of society, a jail invented to outlive them all. The door is open. They can leave or fall instead to squabbling and thence new slaveries. The choice is theirs, as ever it must be."

(Evey Hammond, "V for Vendetta")

a poem titled « The Miracle Is Worth The Wait » that was written around the end of november 2012, but was never released in that particular form, and eventually yielded the lyrics of a song with the same name…

We’ve been talking for a while about creating a #WritingHorrors series, similar to #WritingWonders / #WordWeavers / #WritersCoffeeClub, but for #writers of #horror, #DarkFantasy, or who just want to enhance their #writing with #dwrk elements in general.

This will be a series of short questions with a few longer #WritingPrompts mixed in, intended to help improve yourself as a #writer, and to improve whatever #story you’re working on.

When I was putting together my "Forgotten Greek and Roman Myths" manuscript, I was constantly told that it is not a sellable concept for a book - because "people want to read their favorite myths", and not unkown ones.

Now the reviews are trickling in, and every reviewer highlights how exciting it is to find unknown myths about the well-known gods and heroes.

🤷‍♀️

(Still looking for an English language publisher, btw.)

I translated a text with deepl today. It isn't very good, but I noticed that translating my corrections back into the original language often made the original text better. The translator thus showed me how to become my own editor. Maybe this is the true value of #LLMs . They have no reasoning ability, no curiosity. They prefer to make mistakes than to work out implications. They are pure collective language oracles, the quintessential proof-readers.

So ... always turn off? I'm just gonna jam a screwdriver in it to be safe.

Shepherd is a nifty book discovery site that you should check out if you're a reader!

Each year they hold a three fave reads extravaganza, which eventually produces a books of 2024 list.

Here are my three:

Excited to be able to share this now! I was on the Re-Creative podcast discussing Alice in Wonderland as one of my writing influences.

It was a good time. Hope you’ll check it out: https://re-creative.ca/alice-in-wonderland/

Tag yourself! I was Lawful Evil when I wrote on a typewriter (yes, I'm impossibly old). I changed alignment to Chaotic Good when I got a word processing program with multiple typefaces.

Today on our podcast Re-Creative Mark and I are joined by the super successful and super-fun science fiction writer, John Scalzi.

It's an entertaining conversation about science fiction, the egotistical nature of writing, and John's hobby, which is music.

But the conversation doesn't end there, as we examine the value of creating art, just for the joy of it.

Addendum:

1. One page of academic writing often requires 5+ of those books.

2. I still buy a whole lot of books (yep) and go to a whole lot of libraries.

3. Even university libraries have budgets.

4. Copyright is obviously still a thing.

I once asked a writer friend why she wrote, and she replied, with total sincerity: "For revenge."

I am finishing up my mythology manuscript this week, and it is really hard to let this one go... I had too much fun with the stories. I found a lot of forgotten Greek and Roman myths or myth variants that surprised and delighted me. It was like a huge puzzle to play with.

I have seen more neighbors today than any time we've lived here.

Because it's a holiday and everyone is working in their yards.

Of course, the pupper dog wants to go outside and meet everyone but I want to work on my #AmWriting #Writing #Editing

Who will win?...

Dear authors: don't use AI for cover image proposals to send to artists.

If you have an idea, get over your embarrassment and out your crayons. An artist worth working with won't belittle you for a clumsy drawing. Provide words on details you want. Show covers you like.

You'll get better results. #writing
