Shortly after I arrived here on Mastodon in late 2022, I posted this message as part of an introduction...
__________________________

I care about a lot of issues, but I care about nothing more than what human commerce and industry have done to our climate and environment.

Spurred on by greedy capitalists, our modern society is trashing the ecosystem, poisoning the oceans, filling our bodies with plastic, killing entire species, slashing biodiversity to shreds and ramping up global temperatures, bringing more fires, floods, droughts, hurricanes, famines, and war.

What I hope is that Mastodon can serve as an effective forum to educate people — those who are willing to be educated — about what is coming in our future and our children's future, and what we might do together to prepare for that.
__________________________

Alas, in the two years I have been on this platform, things have got worse, *much* worse.

There has been ZERO progress in slowing climate change. In fact, fossil fuels — oil, gas, and coal — are being produced and burned faster now than ever before. Rainforests are still being destroyed. Whole species are dying out, thousands going extinct every year. Earth is becoming a wasteland.

And on the political front... well, shit, I don't have to tell you how bad it is now. We are living in dystopia.

Is there any light in the darkness? It's difficult to see, but I'll keep looking. And if you find me, please take my hand.

Don’t forget those who insisted that actions needed to avoid the #ClimateCrisis were “too expensive.”

Don’t forget all the record-breaking, historic or “100 year” events we’ve seen lately.

They’re not the “new normal.

It’s going to keep getting exponentially worse.

Don’t forget Valencia, Spain.
A Valencia street filled with crumpled and piled cars left behind after the record-breaking flooding.

Afternoon all. We were very lucky during #stormEowyn and other than a few hours without power we seem to have come out the other side largely unscathed. Hope you're all OK. Big up to all those working to repair the damage and maybe, just maybe, we should start taking some big scale efforts to stop these getting worse? You know, might be a good idea?

Eric Abetz, Tasmanian minister for exclusivity and planetary destruction seems to argue that Tasmania's forestry practices are wrong, but others are even more wrong so we should keep doing what we're doing.

It boggles my mind that people can be so complacent and just go on with their daily lives like nothing is wrong — while the world as we know it is literally vanishing beneath our feet.

A third of the Arctic’s tundra, forests, and wetlands have become a source of carbon emissions, a new study has found, as global heating ends thousands of years of carbon storage in parts of the frozen north. More than 30% of the region was a net source of CO2, according to the analysis, rising to 40% when emissions from wildfires were included.

For millennia, Arctic land ecosystems have acted as a deep-freeze for the planet’s carbon, holding vast amounts of potential emissions in the permafrost. But ecosystems in the region are increasingly becoming a contributor to global heating as they release more CO2 into the atmosphere with rising temperatures.

The study comes amid growing concern from scientists about the natural processes that regulate Earth’s climate, which are being affected by rising temperatures. Together, the planet’s oceans, forests, soils, and other natural carbon sinks absorb about half of all human emissions, but there are signs that these sinks are under strain.

Burnt mansions: Why the next election is a fork in the road

7am Saturday Paper
Fri Jan 24 2025

As wildfires tore through some of LA’s most affluent neighbourhoods, burning down mansions owned by celebrities, some wondered if it might be a turning point in how seriously we take the climate crisis.

But climate scientist Joëlle Gergis wasn’t sharing that hope.

Instead, Gergis was angered by our heartache for wealthy communities while the impact of climate change disproportionately affects the poor.

And to make matters even worse, a climate denier has entered the White House.

Now, Gergis is turning her attention to the upcoming election here in Australia, where she says we have a choice to make about how comfortable we are being complicit on climate.

Today, climate scientist and contributor to The Saturday Paper, Joëlle Gergis, on why the next election is a fork in the road for our climate.

Many of my followers here are seniors, like me (I’m almost 71), or are at least middle-aged. Most of us are angry and probably grief-stricken about what capitalist industry is doing to the biosphere.

But what must it feel like to be a young person in your teens or in your twenties and be looking at a future of near-certain disaster, the collapse of society, the destruction of everything you hold dear? I can't imagine the pain.

Here’s an article that highlights the problem while also suggesting solutions:

Of course, the best solution of ALL would be for the world to turn away from capitalism, eliminate billionaires, and pivot decisively toward degrowth and climate justice.

Just how powerful are you feeling right now? I ask, as it just might be less than you have the right to feel. Because recent movements by both the government and the Coalition suggest that they have a heightened sense of the importance of each and every vote.

Prime minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition leader Peter Dutton have started pushing their campaign pitches onto us- unusually early, according to experts. Even before an election has been called.

Today, federal politics reporter Natassia Chrysanthos, on which party’s slogan has the better chance of winning us over. And the political catchphrases that have made - and broken - candidates’ bids for office in the past.

Yet again the damn MSM pushing the antiquated 2-Party line. Here's my answer, Natassia:

I haven't done any research on this yet (hello #lazyWeb!) but there are balcony solar panels for apartment dwellers, yes?

Are there ones small enough to hang out of a typical US double-hung window (I don't have a balcony)? Are they of any use?

(I have four south-facing windows that get unobstructed sun ALL day long--which I can attest to given how hot my apartment can get in the summer)

And what can you do with them? I assume at least charge USB devices? Is there more you can do?

(once I go do some research myself I'm happy to report back)

#Italy: Wasp altered by #ClimateChange destroying #beehives

#VespaOrientalis has wrecked 40,000 beehives in three regions

"An Italian wasp which has turned into a more aggressive alien species due to climate change is wreaking havoc among Italian beehives, green farming officials told ANSA Tuesday.

"The Vespa Orientalis hornet has become just the latest of threats to bees, whose declining numbers are jeopardising agriculture worldwide, said Laura Bortolotti, lead researcher of the Crea AA - Agriculture Environment think tank.

"The hornet has recently destroyed some 40,000 beehives in #Lazio, #Campania and #Molise officials said.

"'Despite being a native species in Italy, the Vespa Orientalis is behaving as if it were an alien species; its behavior towards bees has changed in a few years, becoming increasingly #aggressive, also due to climate change which, in some way, has altered the environmental balance', Bortolotti told ANSA.

"Vespa Orientalis is also an increasing threat to public health in urban areas, they said."

I was 16 years old in 1970. Of course I expected a lot of things to change during my lifetime — but not like this. Not like this.

#Science #Environment #Climate #ClimateChange #ClimateCrisis #ClimateEmergency
Two maps of Earth, side-by-side, showing global temperature anomalies compared with the 1951-1980 average. The first map, labeled 1970, shows how much cooler temperatures around the globe were then, with most areas in blue or white and only a few in orange. The second map, labeled 2024, reveals how much heat is now baking the planet. Almost all areas are orange, red, or dark red.

When the final man sits, dying, on top of the final hill and looks out across the toxic, burning hellscape he helped create that is now unfit for human habitation, will he experience regret?

No.

He'll die thinking he won.

Some victory.

LA on fire

I humbly submit this suggestion to the gov't officials responding to the #CaliforniaWildFires. How about using some of the #NationalGuard to start building temporary housing for those displaced by the fires? The #Olympics will be here in a few years & I've read about plans to build Olympic villages to house athletes? How about start on something like that now? & convert some of the stadiums that are in L.A. & will house gymnastics, track & field, et al. into temporary housing.

#ClimateCrisis #Capitalism #ShockDoctrine

Commentary: #Fires, #Hurricanes, #ExtremeWeather: The Media Misses the #ClimateLink

#Protesting the #FossilFuelIndustry and their political allies can help fix the narrative, and turn disasters into opportunities for #ClimateAction

by Margaret Klein Salamon, January 12, 2025

"Who is to blame for the #LosAngelesFires? For the destruction of #Asheville? The devastation of #Acapulco? If you listen to the mainstream media, you would get the impression that no one is truly responsible. These are framed as tragic but random events– acts of nature without clear cause or accountability. Even if articles do mention climate change, which they tend to bury toward the end, they won’t tell you the people and companies who caused these disasters in order to enrich themselves. And if you listen to right-wingers, you will get the mistaken impression that DEI, arson, and the Democratic Party caused these disasters.

"But here’s the truth: These mega-disasters are caused by the climate emergency, which has been caused by fossil fuels. The fossil fuel industry has raked in obscene #profits for decades, while knowingly bringing down apocalypse onto the rest of us.

"We have the power to change the narrative. Imagine this: As fires rage through the city, a group of climate activists non-violently occupy the California State House in Sacramento. Or LA City Hall. Or Marathon Oil’s refinery in Los Angeles County. They would demand that fossil fuel companies pay for the damage they’re causing, and face criminal prosecution for the harm that they have inflicted.
Such a protest would be covered on front pages across the globe, shifting the narrative from passive victimhood to active accountability. This is an opportunity that the climate movement has yet to fully seize.

"The climate emergency is accelerating, and so is the frequency and scale of disasters. When these disasters occur, the eyes of the country and sometimes the world focus on the crisis and its fallout. This should be a tremendous learning opportunity for the public about the dangers of the climate emergency, but the media obscures the true cause of these events. While truthful headlines would report along the lines of, “The Climate Emergency Strikes Again,” the media continues to largely report these disasters as anomalous weather events.

"Activists have a unique role to play in these moments. By connecting fossil fuels to the damage we’re seeing — floods, fires, hurricanes — they can elevate the conversation and force the public to reckon with the reality of the climate emergency. Activists can also call for proactive policies: investments in renewable energy, phasing out fossil fuels, and sustainable rebuilding efforts. The “Make Polluters Pay” demand, which New York State just passed after facing pressure from the New York climate movement, offers a compelling framework for justice in the wake of climate disasters. With millions or even billions of dollars in damage, justice demands that the culprits — fossil fuel companies who have knowingly warmed the atmosphere for decades — foot the bill.

"Disasters are opportunities to shape long-term policy change. Disasters create a unique moment when the public and politicians are more open to new ideas and transformative policy changes. Naomi Klein argued for the unique political opportunities that disasters open up in her 2007 book, The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism. Activists can use this moment to demand not only immediate relief but also policies that challenge the fossil fuel industry’s grip on power.

"Climate Emergency Fund is dedicated to supporting the nonviolent disruptive activists who are pushing these important conversations forward, through raising money and making grants. We saw an example of how climate protest can determine the narrative around climate disaster by accident — we supported a protest of Burning Man. The protest wasn’t terribly successful until Burning Man flooded and became a mud pit. Stories about the disaster, which were quite widespread, harkened back to or were even framed around the protest. This made the coverage more climate-focused and more politically activating.

"In moments of crisis, we must demand that climate change be treated not just as an afterthought, but as the root cause of the disaster. It’s time to stop focusing exclusively on short-term relief and rebuilding the status-quo and start building towards a fossil-free, climate-resilient future.

"So when disaster strikes — as it will more and more in the coming years, first, make sure you and your loved ones are safe. Second, see if there is anyone in your immediate vicinity who needs your help. And third, join, or plan, a protest that shifts the narrative. Let’s make it clear: These are not random catastrophes — they are the consequences of the fossil-fueled climate emergency. And we can and must hold the culprits accountable."
