I really can’t overstate how important it is to be conversational on this platform. The passive consumption of content is such a raw cheat of APub.

Comment on everything. Invite others to conversation. Create dialogue, discuss differences. With strangers, with creators, with news article bots - it doesn’t matter. A reply is better than a repost any day

Talk to each other.

So Bsky finally implements a feature, #RSS feed, that #Mastodon has had for years.
I bet it feels good for them to suck just a little less.

Tiny Mastodon Tip About Blocking Threads/Meta :facebook::nes_fire:

With this week's news
about Meta starting to test Threads integration with ActivityPub (the protocol that makes the Fediverse interconnected): https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/13/meta-starts-testing-threads-integration-with-activitypub/

Many people, like myself,
might feel uneasy about this. There are many reasons to be:

Whether it is due to Meta's (mal)practices when it comes to moderation, disinformation, politics, or problematic privacy, to say the least, your discomfort with this is very valid :valid:

On Mastodon,
know that you can pre-block a whole domain at the account level ⛔️

Now, this is not a complete solution and might not prevent all of your data from passing through, but it should prevent Threads accounts on these instances from following you and seeing most of your posts, and you theirs.

HOW TO ❓

1. On desktop, go to "Preferences" > "Import and export"

2. On your computer, create a text file and copy the 2 following lines in it:

threads.instagram.com
threads.net

3. Change the ".txt" extension of this file to ".csv"

4. Go back to Mastodon's Preferences and go to the "Import" section in the left side menu.

5. There, for "Import type" select "Domain blocking list"

5.1. On the right, make sure to select "Merge" and not Overwrite in order to keep your previously blocked Domains, if you had any.

5.2. In "Data" on the left, click on "Browse" and select the ".csv" file you just wrote.

5.3. Click "UPLOAD" at the bottom.

6. You will then see a message to confirm. Click "CONFIRM" :blocky_white_cursor:

7. Done! And good riddance! :blobcatrainbow:✨

In September 2020 I started what became a long #Twitter thread on #MultilingualResearch.
https://twitter.com/petersuber/status/1307774697531113474

Starting today, I'm stopping it on Twitter and continuing it on #Mastodon.

Here's a rollup of the complete Twitter thread.

As of today, I have been on Mastodon for one year (after 12 on the birb site). No regrets. I have more meaningful interactions, more followers who are real people, and my timeline feels a lot less like doomscrolling. It has been good for my mental health.

I know Mastodon is not perfect, and there are important things to do better. I hope we will. This place deserves it.

#Mastodon interaction lessons-learned:

— Be authentic.

— Like life, everyone is on their own journey and timeframe. Don’t compare yourself to others in posting frequency or content.

— Follower counts don’t define your/others’ value.

— When deciding between engaging and withdrawing, err on the side of engaging.

— Sometimes, threads you’re mentioned on just conclude. Your presence didn’t cause it to die.

— An ongoing conversation among mutuals isn’t purposefully excluding you. Most likely, they’d be happy to have you join in.

— Sometimes, people will stop interacting with you. As long as you weren’t being a jerk, it’s probably not about you, and you need to just let it go.

— Likes are unlimited. Go ahead and like that post; it’ll make the author’s day a bit brighter.

— If your post doesn’t receive likes, it’s okay. Your awesome post just got lost in the shuffle.

— Lifting up others feels really f$*cking good. Whether on Masto or elsewhere, aim to find yourself in a community where this is the norm.

Hello new people, welcome! 👋

You don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon!

All links in Mastodon posts count as 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how long they actually are.

Also, the links are preserved in their original form. Unlike commercial social networks, there are no trackers of any kind inserted.

More info about this and many questions answered at:

You get one wool heart each.

— Updated with a Reply with Instances! -- OK Mastodon - I have a question about universities and #selfhosted instances. #PleaseBoost
Do you know of any Universities or other Educational Institutions that are hosting their own #Mastodon or other #Fediverse instances? Please leave a reply with the example if you do. I'm building the case for my University to do so.
Thanks!

The German state of Saxony has started their own #mastodon server at https://social.sachsen.de/

The server is intended for the departments and organisations that are part of the government of Saxony.

It is run by the Saxon Data Protection Authority ( @sdtb ), who states:

“I am pleased that I can provide public bodies with a data protection-compliant social network for their public relations work."

We just reached the 14 million milestone of Fediverse users.
Not a single ad displayed.
Not a single algorithm suggestion.
Nobody pushing hate speech.

Happy milestone, #Fediverse !

why is it open bigotry against russian people allowed on this server #russia #mastodon

The second beta of #Mastodon 4.2.0 has arrived. We're getting there! See the extensive changelog and upgrade instructions here:

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.2.0-beta2

Folks should take a look at the #fullTextsearch function that Eugen is proposing for #Mastodon and how closely it resembles the #search patch of the woman who he kicked off the Mastodon repo GitHub & Discord a couple of months ago. Also, her patch was more configurable that the thing he's bringing to main that has zero attribution of her work. #fediverse#mastodev#MastoDevs

I'm gonna put this out there: If you are new to #Mastodon and have found people to be hostile, or nitpicky, and just generally unhelpful please @ me and say hi. I am happy to walk you through this place, get you comfortable, be non-judgy about helping you, and help make this place your new home. I'm gonna call this #MastoHelper If others want to help newbies, lets do it together!
We need to do more to make people feel welcome first, that's how you create a culture people want to be part of

I am becoming exhausted with social media. The fighting about Meta, the lies and misinformation on #bluesky regarding #Mastodon and on Mastodon regarding bluesky. People are clearly the issue, it is not just Big Social

Don't just say you are sorry and you regret the error. Tell me exactly what you are going to do going forward to not have this happen again.

What safeguards are you putting in place to prevent this? What policy, technical, or cultural changes are you putting into place? What have you learned?

Also let's note that #mastodon servers store more than just _your_ users data. You need to be doing due diligence to inform _them_ as well, and posting as an admin on your own server isn't it.

The thing about #Calckey is that it's developing incredibly fast in part because we realize all these recent feature announcements are urgent.

We want to build softare that's competitive not just with #Mastodon, but also #Twitter and #Bluesky.

This is why -- within the last week -- we launched post editing, numerous accessibility improvements, and other goodies.

And I personally migrated my account from mastodon.social to calckey.social.

But of course, there's bugs and slowdowns and errors. Lots of stuff that was just completely unpredictable happened.

I've personally been on the phone for hours on end trying to sort things out for the team.

Social media never sleeps.

I made the transition to #Mastodon the day Elon closed his deal. Looking back, the difference is surreal.

On Twitter, my feed was full of political trolls pushing my buttons and pissing me off and making me question my faith in humanity.

On Mastodon, I get to read opinions from many of the same people I respected over there... but also I get brief, random windows into subcommunities like #Mosstodon, which is a delightful group of nature weirdoes and scientists posting pictures of moss they see out in the wild. It's so wholesome and positive that it restores my faith in humanity.

I wrote a blog post about why we wrote Mastodon For Dummies and the process of doing so.

Summary: It's a small book, but the most important thing I've ever written.

Warum?

Schade. Ich will nicht zu #Twitter zurück, aber ich will auch aktuelle lokale News 🤑🤮🙄😭

Why #Mastodon and the #Fediverse are so important:

“Relying on market-based means of communication made it inevitable that sooner or later, the ruling class would get to determine who can speak and how.”

Now have access to the #ai #writing platform, Lex.

It's this kind of stuff that really gives me pause for content I see online. I do find it incredible, and there are many possibilities here for speeding up writing provided it's used in ethical ways. Though potential for misuse is always present.

I gave the prompt of "Write an article describing #Mastodon and how moderation is different to typical social media websites."

And this is what it generated:
Write an article describing Mastodon and how moderation is different to typical social media websites.

(This next section is written entirely by artificial intelligence)

Mastodon is a social media website that is based on the concept of decentralization. This means that there is no central authority governing the website. Instead, it is run by a community of users who are each responsible for their own part of the website. This makes it very different from traditional social media websites, which are centrally run and controlled.

One of the biggest differences between Mastodon and traditional social media websites is the way that moderation is handled. On Mastodon, there is no central body that decides what is and isn't allowed. Instead, each community on the website decides for itself what is appropriate. This can lead to some communities being very strict and others being very relaxed, but it overall means that the website is much more flexible and open than traditional social media websites.

Another difference is that, because Mastodon is decentralized, it is very difficult for one person or group to effectively censored. This makes it a much more open platform for free speech.

We really don’t need dangerously rich people.

Apparently, 70k new users on #mastodon yesterday

Even if you run your own instance, like I do, you have no #privacy on the #fediverse.

Only I get to read the direct messages received at my instance but I have no control over who sees the direct messages I send to other instances.

So, again, until end-to-end encryption is mandated by the core protocol (ActivityPub), remember:

Treat all posts on #mastodon / the fediverse as public and use an end-to-end encrypted messaging app like Signal if you want to have private conversations with people.
